Bodum Electric Indoor Table Grill and Griddle

Bodum Electric Indoor Table Grill and Griddle, Green ()The distinguishing feature of this unit, the Bodum Bistro 11133 electric table grill, is that the big plate that heats up is smooth on one side and "ribbed" on the other. The smooth, or griddle, side is for items such as eggs and pancakes and hash browns, whereas the the ribbed, or grill, side is for, say, burgers or steaks or chops, where you want to sear in those pretty and ever-flavorful grill marks that result from the ever-wonderful Maillard Reaction. You choose which side to use by simply flipping the plate over. It's designed so you can't flip it without unplugging the controller. Also, there's a simple mechanical device that prevents you from using the device unless the drip tray is installed.

Both sides of the plate are covered in a non-stick coating, and both sides measure 14-5/8 inches by 9-1/8 inches, or 133.45 square inches, which is on the small side if you're cooking for six.A similar product I own, made by Presto, measures 14-1/4 by 18-3/4, or 267.19 square inches, or, as near as matters, 100% bigger.

The outside dimensions of the Bodum 11133 are 20 inches by 12-5/16 by 3-1/8.The housing sports four rubber feet that have a gratifyingly high coefficient of friction relative to Formica. The grill plate is substantial, weighing in at 5 pounds 11 ounces when you add in the weight of the handles and their hardware. Those handles do a fine job; even when the plate is at its highest heat the handles are room-temp to the touch.

The two-sided grill plate itself is dishwasher safe, but the drip tray, which of course got gunky after I fried bacon and skinned the grill, according to the instructions "must be washed by hand."It's a stamped sheet of what I'm guessing is aluminum, and I can't quite figure out what would happen if you put it in the dishwasher anyway.

The package comes with a scraper which you use to scrape detritus to the far left side (there's noplace else to scrape to) and into 14 drain holes that drop grease and crud onto the drip tray. Those 14 drain holes are quite small, approximately 1/8 inch by 1/4 inch, and they can clog up easily, which I think is a design defect. The scraper can be used to poke ino the drain holes to unclog them, but it's tedious.

That nylon, non-heat-proof scraper is also designed in such a way that it is impossible, when you're using the grill side of the plate, to scrape up against the near and far edges, which are the two long ones. You can see what I mean by finding the photograph I added to this product's description on Amazon that shows the scraper in position as far left as it will go.Again, I think this is a design defect. On the griddle side of the plate the other side of the scraper, which is straight, does get right up against the edges.

The instruction manual is light on details, such as almost all of the ones I provided above.Except for knowing you can put the plate in the dishwasher and that you can't put the drip tray therein (which seems backwards to me), the manual contains no information you need.

Oddly, nowhere does it say not to use metal tools on the two non-stick surfaces.I don't know about you, but I'm not about to start skinning a non-stick grill with a sharp steel scraper even if the manual doesn't warn me not to.If the coating really is designed to be impervious to the sort of scraping a cast-iron griddle can tolerate for decades then I'm surprised the manufacturer doesn't brag on that remarkable fact.If it is not designed to abide such rough treatment I'm surprised the manual doesn't admit it and warn against it.

And it's not like the manual fails to warn against the obvious. For instance, it does warn against using the grill to light charcoal, and elsewhere it does say, "You will achieve the best results if you use meat of . . . good quality."That's like saying, "You will enjoy your three-week cruise more if you choose a luxury ocean liner and not a rowboat" or "You will achieve the best results if you choose a surgeon for your appendectomy and not a seamstress."

Here's the most disappointing feature of this particular example of an electric griddle. At one point the manual says, "Set the desired temperature."That's all it says. You might think it would say, "Set the temperature to 375 for pancakes" or "Set the temperature to medium for scrambled eggs" or "Set the temperature to 9 for searing a Kobe steak."But there's a reason the manual does not get that specific about temperatures. The reason is that that dial you turn to set the temperature has no useful marks on it.There is only a semi-circular swoosh like the Nike swoosh that tapers from skinny near where it says "OFF" to wide for the highest setting.

I don't understand this design decision.

The Presto griddle I mentioned shows actual numerical temperatures in degrees on the dial, from Warm and then 200 through 400 in 50-degree increments, including the ever-popular 350.A similar type of product I own, a GE electric skillet (higher sides, no drainage, and a lid), shows on its dial Warm, Simmer and then 300 through 450 degrees, also in 50-degree increments.

And even if those two products' temperature numbers are inaccurate, at least they can be used as a substitute for the numbers 1 through 9 that we're used to on stoves. But a swoosh is almost completely useless, especially when there are no obvious noon or three-o'clock or six-o'clock or 9-o'clock positions. If you have learned through experimentation (you do experiment when you're cooking, don't you?) that slider-sized hamburgers should be cooked at 400, or even if all you know is that they should be cooked at number 7, you can use that information to dial in that temperature every time. But with a swoosh you have to guess every time.Take a look at the photograph I took, on the Amazon page desribing the product, to see what I mean.

As a service to anyone who buys this product, as well as a service to me henceforth, I conducted some tests at two temperature settings, the minimum and the maximum. For the minimum I set the dial to the skinniest end of the swoosh, as shown in that photo. For the maximum obviously I cranked it all the way up.In both cases the room temperature was around 71 degrees Fahrenheit. All I did was record the temperature of the surface of the griddle at one-minute intervals, using an infrared thermometer.I also recorded when the indicator light turned off (meaning the thermostat thought it had risen above the right temperature) and back on (meaning the thermostat thought it had dropped below the right temperature).

Set at the minimum, the recorded temperature rose from room temp of 72.1 degrees to 170 degrees in one minute. The light went off 30 seconds later, at a temperature of 175.The griddle's plate's temp rose to 190 at 2:00 and peaked at 203 at 3:00.Thereafter it dropped at a slightly falling rate of 92 degrees in 21 minutes, or approximately 4.38 degrees per minute, till it dropped to 109 at the 24th minute. At 24:30 the thermostat finally turned back on, and the temp had risen to 130 by 25:00.This is a temperature range from 203 to 109, or 94 degrees, before the thermostat kicks back on again.

Set to the maximum, the recorded temperatures rose from 70 to 96 in 30 seconds, reached a maximum of 515 by 7:00, and ended up at 379 degrees at 31:00.Here is a table showing certain temperatures over that period of 31 minutes:

MIN:SEC --TEMP

I don't expect you to analyze all these data, so let me do it for you.

Set at its maximum heat, the griddle rises from room temp to 515 degrees Fahrenheit within 8 minutes but never gets anywhere close after that initial peak. The maximum temp it reaches thereafter is 440 degrees at around 11:30, and thereafter it bounces from a one-time high of 430 degrees down to a low of 375.The average temp at this maximum setting hovers roughly at 400 degrees.

And remember that all these temp data were measured with no food on the grill.Obviously if you slap a slab of 50-degree or even 70-degree hash browns on that grill, the temp is going to decrease considerably. When you drop a couple of room-temp T-bones on it, as I did tonight, I can tell you that the temp drops too much; the sizzle that indicates searing went away too soon, and it was worse when I did the first flip.Next time I'll preheat for 8 minutes (the manual says 4 to 6) before dropping the meat, because that appears to be when it's the hottest it will ever be.

This Bodum Bistro 11133 electric grill is sturdily built, and it does offer both griddle and grill. But it falls down in most areas compared to my Presto.

If you have twice as much acreage you can cook more food, obviously, but you can also more easily flip your burgers or your wursts or your emu breasts onto a fresh sector of the grill, which will be hotter. The Presto and similar products let you skin the grill by simply sweeping the cruddy grease towards you and into a moat below the near edge; the Bodum forces you to sweep crud into little, hard-to-clean holes. The Presto, and pretty much every other such product, I'd guess, have numbers on the dial instead of a featureless swoosh; one option if you buy this product is to go ahead and make four or five marks on the Bodum's dial yourself, maybe with a china marker or a silver Sharpie or a carefully wielded bayonet.

The Presto, which I got a couple years back, cost about $30.The only significant advantage the Bodum 11133 offers is the grill on the other side of the griddle, and even then you can't have both at the same time, which you can if you substitute for the grill side a product such as a grill pan that you simply heat up on the stove, and which you can also put in the oven.(I've found the Calphalon 12-inch grill pan Calphalon Professional Nonstick 12-Inch Round Grill Pan satisfactory.)

And you can buy several Prestos for the price of one of these Bodums.

()This was a tough review to write. On the one hand, my Mom LOVED this grill. On the other hand, it is WAY over priced for what you get, at retail, or even with Amazon's discount.

The idea is great: an indoor grill that has a griddle on one side and a traditional grooved grill on the other. And, it is incredibly easy to switch between the two plates. You quite literally lift and flip (see my pictures). The grill plate cannot be flipped while plugged in, which decreases the chance of trying to flip while it's still hot. And, it was easy to clean, by hand, and in the dishwasher we tried both. The non-stick surface is exactly that, and while a larger surface would have been nice, this also fits comfortably on a countertop without taking up too much room. It's not too heavy either, so it can be moved around with ease.Plus, it comes in several colors to go with most any kitchen.

We tried several foods on this.My mom grilled T-Bones, Mahi Mahi, scallops and even did an entire London Broil on it.For size comparison, it will hold two large T-Bones, or 4 medium sized New York Strips. The steaks got a very nice sear, with grill marks, and were easy to come to the desired wellness using some common cooking times, such as you would for a frying pan (a medium thick steak needs about 3 minutes on high heat, per side, for medium). We cooked all these foods on the maximum setting. My mom seared the London Broil and used a temperature probe to check donenessas she would have done in the oven also, despite knowing what temp the oven is at!We had no problem with the grill holding heat. This would be an ideal appliance for a couple with a small kitchen another cook top, that doesn't heat up a room the way an oven can.

Despite how great it cooked for us, $200 (or even $140) is outrageously expensive, especially considering it has a couple basic flaws. The temperature dial has no numbers. This is an issue if you need to cook something slowly at a low temperature. This wasn't a big negative for us, but for the price it's unacceptable. Some foods are best prepared at a particular setting (like 350 for pancakes), and there's no way to tell with this.Another problem, the entire thing can go into the dishwasher EXCEPT for the drip tray the item most likely to get the messiest? Finally, Wolfgang Puck has a very similar product, Wolfgang Puck WPRGG0010 1800-Watt Reversible Nonstick Grill and Griddle, that is $50 cheaper, has numbers on the temperature dial and is from a better-known brand.

Overall, this was very useful, and we will definitely use it a lot.I would not hesitate to recommend it if it were less than $100, but I can't recommend it for $140. Those who are tempted might want to try the Wolfgang model at the lower price point.

**UPDATE** We've had the grill quite a while now, and have realized that it really is an awesome appliance that we WOULD pay $140 for!We use it 2-3 times a week, every week.Everything from hotdogs to steaks to fish to pankackes comes out wonderful.Though I still wish the dial had temperatures listed, I would still not hesitate to buy this again.

()I got this and thought, "Oh, cool, one appliance for two jobs, and should be easy to clean up instead."Ok, it does the job of two appliances semi-ok, but the cleanup is iffy and you need to pay attention to what you're thinking about cooking on it.Though the description emphasizes cooking right at the table, I wouldn't advise it unless you're going to cook something that is splatter free.I wouldn't try the suggested bacon, except in the case where you want everyone at the table coated in grease droplets.Pancakes, eggs, veggies, and anything that doesn't normally send hot oil particles flying are ok.Cooking up some ground beef, sausages, bacon, and the like, is not so good an idea due to their fat content.Even the manual points out that you should be using "quality meat" with this grill.

While you might be thinking, "I can just turn the heat down and it will be ok," let me warn you, there is no temperature guide on this thing. The temperature control dial doesn't use temperatures or numbers to indicate the temperature setting.Instead, it has a sloped graphic which is fairly useless. You get to guess how hot the grill will get based on where along the slope you set the dial.To add insult to injury, the temperature of the grill itself isn't very stable, varying up to 20 degrees, (I used a thermometer to check this out).Maybe I'm just too used to cooking with gas and forgot this is how cooking with electric is?

And now for the cleanup. If you've opted to cook up something greasy or something has gotten stuck to the non-stick surface, (marinade, cheese, charred meat, etc), the included scraper doesn't do so well for cleaning up the grill side. The grooved end of the scraper doesn't properly fit the grooves in the grill top.Luckily, the whole top can go in the sink for a good soak, and then into the dish washer. The grease catching pan on the bottom is hand wash only for some reason, contrary to the words of some of the other reviewers, (page 7 of the manual, last paragraph).

After cooking up several meals on this item, I have to admit it's useful, even if it is a pain here and there. All said and done, I think it's pricey for what it is and how it performs.Other models offer the same or more features and at a much better price.

()In the past, I've used stovetop griddles and even some electric griddles. The Bodum Electric Grill and Griddle puts all of these to shame.I love this piece of cookware and would repurchase immediately if something we're to happen to this one.

PROS:

First, the unit itself comes in four pieces: the stand, drip tray, griddle/grill, and electric adapter.

* Stand-the stand is extremely sturdy.A big plus for me is that it has a rubber coated base which actually doesn't slip...at all.It also is easy to clean up with a kitchen wipe or damp paper towel.

* Drip TrayThe drip tray is probably less than 1/4", but unlike most griddles it covers the entire area of the griddle.I've cooked large breakfasts with lots of bacon and have never even come close to filling it.After emptying the contents you can throw it in the dishwasher...definite plus.

* Griddle/Grillconstructed of heavy non-stick aluminum, I'm expecting this to hold up for many years.I've cooked sandwiches, pancakes, burgers, veggies, pancakes, etc at various temperature settings without any problem.Low settings are awesome for keeping food warm until meal time, and medium/higher settings can cook a 1/2" burger in minutes. There may be a slight heat variation between the longest sides, but it's so minimal that it's barely noticeable (I was being especially critical when looking at this since it's been my biggest complaint with other electric griddles. This Bodum Griddle offers the most even cooking that I've seen thus far).I really appreciate the ingenuity of the grill on one side of the plate and the griddle on the other...it's one less thing I have to find space for. Also, the handles are extremely heat-resistant.

My only Con, and it's not even that big of a deal is the cord is pretty short.I think it would be difficult to actually use the griddle at the dining room table as advertised. It's probably 4' long. Also, the temperature is set by a typical dial knob.

All in all, I love this griddle/grill.

()This is a fantastic table top grill from Bodum. The grilling surface is quite large and the cooking surface is dishwasher safe ( I wash mine by hand though).I didn't grill any thick steaks or hotdogs on it, as I have a Char Broil Infrared Gas grill outdoor, but I did use this to do Korean BBQ, which consists of a bunch of marinated meats that you sit around a table with friends and family and grill and eat ( Do a google search for Korean BBQ if you need a visual image).I don't think steaks would be a problem on this grill as long as you aren't expecting the same kind of quality from a gas/charcoal grill.

I cooked marinated rib-eye sliced thinly on it, as well as squid, tripe, chicken thighs and shrimp. All came out well and cooked with no problems.I did it outdoors cause the food was smokey from all the marinade burning off.The dial doesn't tell you the exact temp, but the style of food I cooked needed to be on high heat so I just turned it all the way up.

Clean up was ok, but took a little more elbow grease to get clean. While the surface was hot, I used the included scraper to scrape off the burned on sauces, and then washed it by hand and scrubbed off the grill plate with a non scratch scrubber.

I would recommend this grill if you are looking for an indoor grill.I also used it to cook pancakes and eggs with great success. My main fun with using this is Korean BBQ, so this suited my purpose quite well.

This grill does make cooking and eating with friends more fun if you are cooking the right type and style of food.I recommend this grill.

Farberware Millennium Stainless Steel Soft Touch Nonstick Skillet

Farberware Millennium Stainless Steel Soft Touch Nonstick Skillet, 10-InchI bought this skillet for use with my induction burner (and it works well with that) but the nonstick coating is so much better than expected, I've ended up using it on my standard electric stove as well.

I'm an All-Clad user and have their nonstick skillet, but after a short time stuff sticks, coating or not. With this pan, after two years of pretty constant use, everything still slides out perfectly as though it were brand new.I'm not a gentle cook and have managed to scratch it a little. It doesn't matter; it is still perfectly nonstick. That makes clean up so easy I rarely bother to put it in the dishwasher.A quick swish with a soapy sponge and it's clean.

On the down side, it's almost impossible to keep the outside bottom of the pan shiny because of the ridged pattern so I can't hang it for display, but that's a small price to pay for omelets that slide out easily or grill cheeses that brown beautifully (even the cheese doesn't stick).

I have the 8-inch version too, which I use often for single servings and crepes. If I'm trying for a nice sauté, I usually use a regular non-coated pan, but this does work for that.It just takes a little longer.

Since I often use it on my regular stove, the temperature can get pretty high and I have been known to burn things--but they still slide out and clean up is easy.If this pan ever gives out, I'll buy another.I'm really sold on it for nonstick cooking.

We love this skillet! It has a great non-stick coating, which is hard to find in skillets that can be used on induction ranges, especially at this reasonable price. It's perfect for making omelets and other egg dishes. It heats up quickly and is easy to clean.I'd recommend it highly for all types of ranges, but it works especially well on an induction cooktop.

I've had this pan for about six months and I really like it. It is nicely balanced and the non-slip handle fits my hand perfectly. The non-stick surface is very good and the pan cooks evenly.

Cleaning the bottom is a bit tough due to the fine concentric rings. There is a noticeable crevice where the disk meets the pan that is a gunk magnet, and damn near impossible to clean out. If you are anal about such things this will drive you nuts. Otherwise the exterior is no harder to clean than any other polished stainless cookware. The interior is almost self-cleaning. Farberware says you can put in the dishwasher, but we don't.

Unlike my other Millennium cookware, this one is not tri-ply, but stainless with a disk bottom. The disk is big enough so under normal cooking on a gas range the flame does not extend beyond the disk.

The only unknown is longevity. If I get at least two years out of it I'll be happy. If not, I'll update this review.

Update July 3, 2011: While the interior surface looks nearly perfect, it has started to lose its non-stickness. Unless I use oil or butter my eggs stick to the surface. I am starting to look for a replacement. Downgraded from 4 stars to 3.

I purchased this frying pan after being disappointed by so many others. The biggest problem I have with large frying pans is that they don't stay flat on the stovetop.I have a flat top stove.I LOVE THIS PAN!It's heavy duty.Heating is EVEN.The handle is very comfortable and it's super thick stainless steel has remained very flat.Clean up is a breeze. No problems at all with this one.I highly recommend it.Like the old saying goes:You get what you pay for.I would definitely purchase this pan again.

Ecolution Elements Eco-Friendly 8 Piece Cookware Sets

Ecolution Elements 8 Piece Cookware Set, GreyI bought this cookware set because they were Ecolution, and the color green was what I wanted.I used them twice and the coating on the bottoms of the pans are chipping off.I don't know if this will interfere with how they cook, but I did not expect that this would happen after only using a couple of times!I just missed the deadline to return them by a couple of weeks, so unless I want to only receive a minimal amount of the purchase price, plus the cost for return shipping, I will just chalk it up as a "poor selection", and purchase another set.

BARELY a 2 star review. Looks nice, non-stick coating is excellent, the issue is with the general construction. Sub-par rivets and handles are poorly designed and sure to fail during regular use. Our Ecolution 10" pan is only 3 months old and the handle is already starting to spin, and there is no way to tighten it. Fine for a cheap set to give to a student, or someone furnishing their first kitchen, but this is low end stuff hiding behind a fake eco-friendly name/label. It is NOT eco-friendly if you have to throw it away 6 months later.

Do not buy this product if you have a gas stove. St handle started smoldering & melting the first time I used it. There is no warning on the package whatsoever. highly Disappointed.

I brought these pots and pans because they are PFOA free. Since the non-stick coating seems very durable, I'm very happy with that. However, the outer green coating stains and scratches very easily (as another reviewer pointed out). It probably does not affect the functionality, but those scratches and stains are very noticeable and I find them very ugly. Since I'm happy with other Ecolution cookware, I would just avoid these green pots and pans for aesthetic reasons.

****Update****

There is another probelm I would like to point out. The handle on the Ecolution frying pans gets loose very easily. I have to tighten the screw almost every other time I use the frying pans. It happens to both of the frying pans from the 8 piece set and also to another Ecolution frying pan I bought separately. So, I have to say it's a design flaw.

I was so excited to recieve these until I used them! These are nice starters only! They are too thin, and the bottom started to peel the 1st time I used them. They will have to do for now, but I hate that I will have to replace them soon! Good short term, not long term!

Bene Casa Aluminum Non-Stick 10" Fry Pan

Bene Casa Aluminum Non-Stick 10' Fry PanA nice enough frying pan, cooks evenly. The nonstick coating is the least durable of any pan I've ever used, unfortunately.Treat it well and it'll last though.

I was hoping for a merely adequate non-stick frying pan when we ordered this (in part because of the free super-saver shipping). I was pleasantly surprised that it is a substantial pan, with a good heavy base and nice handle.Great deal for outfitting a 'starter' kitchen.

All-Clad Stainless 6-Inch LidThis is a lid. It fits All-Clad's six inch pots perfectly. It's shiny. It holds things inside the pot. The handle can get hot after a while, so be careful. The handle is nicely shaped and is easily held with two fingers. It's shiny. It's just a lid. Though if you didn't have a lid your sauce or whatnot might splatter across your stovetop, and wouldn't that be messy? Yay lids!

Well, it is a stainless lid, that fits small All-Clad saucepans. Performance is not an issue, reallythe only things wrong with it are common to all All-Clad lids (must lift to see food cooking, flat rim around edge is easily dinged and compromises seal with pan.) Also, the c.$30 for a little circle of metal is hard to swallow, but then, we must not mind too much because we are buying these products no matter how much they cost!

Revere 4-Cup Stainless Steel Bottom Easy Fill Tea Kettle

Revere 4-Cup Stainless Steel Bottom Easy Fill Tea KettleThis kettle is great for me.I use it to make tea for myself every day.I do not understand the review that says it gets too hot.I have never needed a pot holder to grab the handle. It easily handles tea for two, any more than that and you may want a bigger one.It heats fast on my "not so fast" electric stove and is easy to fill from the water dispenser on my refrigerator.I love this item and would highly recommend it!

This is a nice sized tea kettle for brewing small amounts. It pours nicely, isn't too heavy and heats quickly. However, I bought one and in a few months, the spring to open the spout broke.I contacted Revere and they immediately sent a replacement.Excellent customer service and the replacement has been perfect.

One year later, the replacement broke and now I am on my third replacement which broke about a month after receiving that.Apparently there is some issue with the metal used for the spring. It cannot take the heat of boiling water for tea. How can you have a tea kettle that can't take the heat! I was really careful when heating water in this third kettle thinking if I heated it on a lower heat, it would be fine. The spring broke anyway. While customer service has been really good, I would not recommend this product and will be shopping for another brand.Revere does not have the quality it used to.

This is now the second one of these that I've bought.I use mine at least every morning for my tea and I just recently bought one for my mother, who also loves it.I don't really know what the qualities of a good tea kettle are, but it whistles, it's easy to fill, and the handle is usable without the assistance of a towel of hot pad. This is the smaller one that my Mommie has.I'm personally a fan of the bigger size myself, but I drink a lot of tea.

Summary: great buy!

The whistle is hard to hear.Your AC fan is louder.Steam coming out around the fill cover heats the handle. It needs a longer pour spout. When you pour, steam from the pour spout hits your hand.

It pours great. No spill over or dripping.

Amazon "Product Features" says "Signature copper bottoms for quick heating".The bottom is stainless steel not copper.

Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel 12 Quart Multi Roaster

Norpro KRONA Stainless Steel 12 Quart Multi RoasterThis roaster has been a great purchase.I've used it 3 times so far for roasting turkey and duck.It cleans up surprisingly easily. With the rack out, it handled an 18 lb turkey with the lid on.The quality seems very good with significant heft. The handles are very well placed to both offer stable handling and to minimize wasted space in the oven. The heavy bottom on both the roaster and the lid do a great job of equalizing heat distribution from the bottom. It's pricey, but worth every penny if you want a great looking and perfectly functioning roaster.

Look, this is a large roasting pan.Why would you want one?To roast large things. What is it good for?Roasting large things.

It's very large, so you need room to store it (and wash it: it probably won't fit in your dishwasher) and it has a VERY heavy base (so if you put the lid on add an hour AT LEAST to your cooking time as it will take a while to heat up in an oven) but if you know what you're doing with it (and why you want it) then you can't really get better than this.

Pros: The base is the best turkey roaster I've ever used (note that I take my turkey to other houses frequently, so the lid is a must have for me).The base and the lid both have very thick, solid metal heat-absorbing cooking surfaces, and the whole thing is stainless steel, so it's super durable and reliable. The handles are offset, so it's not as wide as it would be if they weren't, but that takes some getting used to.There's a custom rack that it comes with that's perfect for roasting (and lifting out your roast in the end, as the rack has handles) and you can cook TWO roasts at once (using the base and the lid.)

Cons: THE PRICE.DAMN that's expensive!I had a large gift certificate for a local cooking store and that's how I got mine, but now I've ordered a second one as a gift for someone else (as they kept eyeing mine with envy every time I came over with a perfectly cooked turkey, brought over in this awesome roaster with a great lid!)It's also big and awkward to store in your cupboard when you're not using it.

Summary: Do you cook enough LARGE roasts or turkeys to need this? No?Then save your money! But if you want to have something great to help out when cooking for 10-20 people several times a year, then here you go!

And if you're cooking for more than that, then you probably should look at a commercial alternative :)

Demeyere Proline 5 Star 9.4 Inch Fry Pan

Demeyere Proline 5 Star 9.4 Inch Fry Pani hesitated for months to buy this pan because it is so expensive. I have another, larger Demeyere proline pan, and it is my favorite of all (better than Mauviel, which is heavy; Le Creuset is great but they are casseroles or dutch ovens) . i like that it heats across the pan, it heats up quickly on our induction stove and it is nonstick without the poisonous coatings such as teflon. so i bought the smaller pan for omelettes or one-person dishes. it is just the right size, perfect.

This pan is amazing! Its not for eggs but it does meat and poultry like nothing else.Totally worth buying.

This frying pan heats evenly, even when a cheap electric range. Remember, electric ranges are always at full power or off -lower settings just switch between the two.

While the surface is not non-stick, it is surprisingly more non-stick than any other stainless steel pan I've ever seen. I can pull meats off without chunks peeling off. Even Salmon remains intact with a quick scrape from a spatula.

The one disadvantage is that the pan, with a thick core of aluminum, is fairly heavy -though not as heavy as a cast iron pan of the same diameter.

I had been using an All Clad pan that I was very happy with when I purchased this Demeyere pan. This is the best pan I have used: it heats evenly, quickly and cleans beautifully. It is heavy, but I have gotten used to that.It makes cooking even more of a pleasure.

Yea, its expensive. As the other reviewer said, not for eggs... I have cooked eggs (with a lot of oil), but then a long soak is needed.

Other than that, it is critical for induction to have a great pan with a heavy base.

And the quality is astonishing, your spouse will be angry when you start sleeping with your pan clutched to your bosom. It is that nice, and worth the money (it will be the last pan you will buy).

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Maker

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle MakerI love this waffle maker! It's like the ones our mom used, not those cheesy seeming plastic things they're making now. It's also got a lot of excellent features that make my life easier.

I'll mention right now that this is a VERY hot waffle maker. They make the plastic ones to be "cool touch".I'll trade the cool touch feature for the sturdier design of this versatile machine. I'm being careful and haven't burned myself yet. But it's something to consider if you'd like your children making waffles. My ten year old could be careful enough, but I keep my five and eight year olds away.

The waffles this machine makes are great! They freeze well too.The family is very happy. When the light goes of the unit is ready to make waffles. Pour in the batter and the light comes on again--wait for it to go off and the waffle is done (however, I usually go on instinct and sometimes pull out the waffle before the light goes off.)

The open grill feature makes wonderful pancakes and fried eggs.I have a big family and it's nice to have two pancakes cook at a shot without taking up all my stovetop!I can have bacon and eggs on the stove and the pancakes on the waffle maker.(I can also have a heart attack if I keep eating all these bacon and eggs!)

The sandwich feature is nice.I can cook two grilled cheese sandwiches at one time getting me out of the kitchen quicker. Some advice--cheese might drip out the side of the sandwich.Just keep the sandwich away from the back of the unit where the cables run in and the mess just wipes off--no problem. The sandwiches cook far more uniformly than they do in a pan on the stove. They taste great.

This unit cleans up easily and changing the grills from waffle to flat is easy.I recommend it over a lot of more costly models if you want more value for your money. This is the most versatile waffle maker I've found and all the features actually work!

I got this one after unsuccessfully trying the Cuisinart waffle maker. It is wonderful!None of the batters, not even gluten-free ones would stick. All waffles came out great, crisp outside and moist inside. The grill feature was a plus and makes great grill cheese or other types or grilled sandwishes in a jiffy.

Back in the 60's I loved the Sundays my Dad made waffles on a toastmaster Waffle/grill. He would add cinnamon, fruit, all kinds of things. Never stuck always light and fluffy. When I went to college my odyssey began. I have gone through 4! different brands and here is why you want this machine Ok Betty Crocker and others may have a beeper but the waffle that comes out could have come out of a toaster, B&D lets you choose on a dark to light waffle 'zone' with a light that goes out when it reaches that temp. Even with a thick from the box batter out came the most fluffy waffle with a Belgium like crust. Take a close look at this baby it's CROME and yes it will get hot, (kids don't touch) but unlike others it CLEANS UP. Overflows are no problem. Just as good a George Forman. And grilled sandwiches were wonderful but I use old world bakery bread with brie and dry salami, again adjust for light and dark. Favorite recipe? Coco for a chocolate waffle and chocolate chip ice cream to make a sandwich. This is an 'open and closed' case and really is space saver 3 in 1 product for our family.

This is a great waffle maker!!Every time we make waffles, they flip right out just like they're supposed to.We haven't had any of them get stuck or had any of the disasters/frustrations that we've had with other waffle irons. It's actually easy to make a waffle again. Can you imagine!?I think the reason why is that the Teflon is good and it gets hot, evenly.

After you get it, my recommendation would be to FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS that comes with it.Just before preheating, brush on some vegetable oil like it says to do.(I guess you can use spray but we've found the oil at first works best.)After that, you won't need anything at all for the other batches. Also, be sure not to mess up the Teflon coating by washing it while it's still hot (let it cool off completely) or by using utensils that will scratch it up, like metal forks and scrubbers. If you take care of this sensitive Teflon, it will take care of you.I think it says not to put it in the dishwasher so you probably don't want to.Both plates, top and bottom, are completely removable and they're really easy to clean with a basic sponge...don't use the scrubby side of the sponge though...you won't need to anyway.

We've made waffles several times already and they've been perfect every time.It DOES get really hot but that's a good thing. We've also flipped it over to the grill side and that's great too. We've made quesadillas, grilled cheese sandwiches, and burgers. For burgers, it has a trench like thing around the border of the grill that the fat collects in.You'll need a little cup or something to catch it where it supposed to drip out.

If you really want it to "drain the fat away" fast like a Forman type grill, just put something under the back left leg to tilt it a bit.Don't put something under the leg that could catch fire though....again, say it with me, "It gets really hot!"We've been placing it on our stove top when we use it...if you have sensitive counter tops, do that too.

If you make a sandwich, keep the grill open and flip the sandwich as needed.Otherwise, your sandwich will get really flat.I think that's it -It really is one of our better purchases lately and so we take good care of it.Oh, and adding a nice amount of vanilla extract to your waffle batter makes them delicious!!(wife said to throw that in) Happy Waffle'n!

This is our second purchase of this same model over many years and have found it to be of good quality, reliable, and attractive square waffle maker. The removable cooking plates make clean up a snap and allows unit to be used for pancakes and sandwich cooking also. The temp control knob can be set to produce desired doneness everytime. I highly recommend this model.

BergHOFF Scala 3.4-Quart 10-Inch Covered Deep Skillet

BergHOFF Scala 3.4-Quart 10-Inch Covered Deep SkilletAt first this skillet works great, truly non-stick, very easy to clean, and heats well... However, within two weeks, only once that I didn't clean it right away (I waited for a couple hours), and all the oil stuck on the surface and it's impossible to clean that off! So now the pan always has a stick surface and I cannot clean it off. For the money that we paid it off, this is really not what I'm expecting!

I love this pan. Easy to clean. Heats evenly. Just a tip do NOT touch the helping handle (the short tab opposite side of long handle) without oven mitts when cooking on the stovetop. I thought the little handle would be cool to the touch like my calphalon pan and I ended up burning myself. You don't need mitts for the long handle.

I bought this pan in the summer of 2011 after moving into a house with an induction cooktop. The pan was fabulous for the first few months and then began to stick badly.Sadly, I don't believe there to be the perfect non-stick, induction-friendly pan.I still use it daily as I have not found a suitable replacement, but it takes a lot of soaking and attention to get it clean. The pan does cook evenly, and I love the depth and lid.

Poor product Poor customer service Would not buy again for half the price

Warning: First time reviewer here, but I use the reviews of products exclusively on whether or not to purchase products on amazon.com. I do not want any other users to go through the same poor customer service I did only to gain nothing.

I have purchased a set of Berghoff Scala Ceramic coated frying pans. I used the main 12" pan for about a month. As time progresses the pan started to stick. I contacted the customer service dept. that told me to deep clean the pan with baking soda and water. After it was dry add oil to the pan while slowly reheating it.I did this several times to cure my pan as suggested by the customer service rep. He assured me that it would take some time for this to work. This took place over 4 months after purchasing the set.I then got preoccupied when moving into my renovated kitchen. After dealing with my renovation I found the pan again. It was now 12 months since purchase.I had a new representative that made it sound like the guy I was speaking to previously did a poor job and was let go, which he was very rude. She stated they needed to find my files and reopen the review of my pan.She advised me to send the pan in so the warranty dept. could look at the pan. I had to pay shipping both ways but I figured they would at least get my pan back into good condition.Berghoff never called or emailed that they had my pan even though I sent a letter with the pan. After waiting a month I decided to email and see if they received the pan. The last customer service rep I had was now gone and I had a new one again. She had to find the pan again and pull up the files. After a reply from the newest customer service rep she stated that my pan was not covered under warranty.WHAT?

She explained that due to the color of the bottom of the pan I had overheated the pan and that the warranty was now void. I the dirt she cleaned on the bottom of my pan was on all our pans we had. We have a glass top range that we cool all our meals on. It does get dirty at times. I simply took a nylon scrubber to clean one of the other pans I had just to see how hard it was.I emailed back stating that her suggestion was not the case and that I wanted to speak to a supervisor.Three weeks later still no response.I called and was directed to the same person I was dealing with my emails. She said she brought the pan to her supervisor and stated that she agreed while refusing to allow me to speak to her supervisor.

The facts: Not once did I ever cook with the pan over ½ heat on my range top. I primarily cooked eggs, sausage, warmed up veggies, and cooked some fish. Mind you that I only used the pan 1 month.I hand washed it after every use. At first everything would slide out of the pan. The pan got to the point where I had to scrape it each time after use and then let it sit in soap water. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AFTER 1 MONTH OF USE!

Due to the numerous customer service representatives, poor service, and average pans I would never recommend anyone buy from this company. They did offer me a deal though, 50% off their retail of a new pan. That was almost the same price I could buy it off of amazon.com.

Buyer Beware Stay Away Learn from my mistakes.

Bialetti Aeternum 2-Quart Covered Sauce Pan

Bialetti Aeternum 2-Quart Covered Sauce PanThe Bialetti Aeternum series is amazing! The coating is ceramic, which is non-stick and rinses out perfectly clean. The pan is great for browning things; it also seems to distribute the heat evenly, resulting in perfectly cooked food every time. If only they made a 3-quart sauce pan!

It could actually be an elegant piece of engineering, but in person it looks like a pair of chinese-knockoff-$5-sunglasses.

Cons:

1. The finish does wear off on the inside, and chips on the edges.

2. It got slightly mishapen during shipping.

3. The metallic finish looks cheap. It is cheap, plastic coated metallic paint. It ruins what would basically be an elegant design. Really not classy, gross in fact. To be clear, I keep this hidden from view with guests around.

4. The handle is made of cheap bakelite plastic. If you heat it up, it will begin to smoke it will smell like, burnt plastic and death.

Pro

1. Stuff really does not stick to the sides. And I guess it is not toxic.

2. having a white backdrop to your cooking is interesting.

3. there are no Rivets connecting the handle to the inside of the cooking.

3. There are few other options on the market.

Bialetti, please put a bit more effort into using higher quality materials for the handle, edges and finishes.

I have been searching for and researching ceramic cookware for months. I came across these and, even though there are vey few reviews, I decided to give them a try. I got the 2qt saucepan, the 10 1/4" frying pan and the 8" frying pan. So far they are all wonderful! The heat is very evenly distributed. I have used the saucepan to brown ground turkey & onions, for spaghetti sauce, heating up vegetables, and other things, and so far everything cleans up easily. I am very happy with the Bialetti Aeturnum pans! I just wish they had a few more sizes!

Pot works well, but lots of small chips are missing on the inside texture after 1 month. The places it chips is usually right over a metal imperfection.Like an air pocket in the metal.

I know it isn't chipping as I wash it because I do it by hand only so that means some sort of ceramic chips are making it into my food..

Kinda scary...

Other than that, it's been OK the last 2 months since I bought it..But I am really turned off about ceramic chips in my kids meals

When I first bought this in Oct 2011 I was so thrilled. The ceramic coating is way easy to clean.I love the red, which spices up my kitchen.

Unfortunately, the coating has started to chip badly around the top, and even on the bottom now I've discovered a chip within the past week.

I don't abuse my pans.I use nylon or wood cooking utensils.I wash by hand.

It's really too bad that it's started to chip like this.I was going to buy a cast iron pan (there are two brands here on Amazon) but was not pleased with the reviews.I use this pan almost every day for soup at lunchtime and veggies at dinner. It has to be sturdy but light enough for me to handle.

Well, the time limit has expired for return, so today I bought a nice stainless steel pan to replace this pan.Wish it could have lasted longer.:(

The Sharper Image 8147SI Stainless-Steel Super Grill with Interchangeable Nonstick Plates

The Sharper Image 8147SI Stainless-Steel Super Grill with Interchangeable Nonstick Plates ()***UPDATED REVIEW TO 2 STARS***

Changing the rating from 5 to 2 stars and going back to one of George's grills. After using this grill 20-30 times (2 3 times a week for about 10 weeks), the mechanism securing the top plate no longer functions as it should. The grill is still usable, but the plates don't align as they once did and the top half wobbles. The problem allows lots more grease to splatter which leaves an oily outline around the grill on the counter after each use.

***ORIGINAL 5 STAR REVIEW BELOW***

The quick overview is that I highly recommend Sharper Image's "Super Grill" as your best bet for this price range. Compared to similarly priced better known competitors, you'll be happy with the Super Grill's highly desirable differentiating features.

First, but not the most important, the Sharper Image grill is really pleasing aesthetically. It just looks better than any of the others we've owned over the years and we won't park it away after every use. The stainless steel finish provides a more refined look and makes it worthy of a continued presence on the counter.

However, as we all know, good looks don't guarantee superior performance. Luckily for The Sharper Image, the Super Grill kicked butt in the area of performance. Immediately noticeable was that the Sharper Image grill heated up and was ready to cook in just over two minutes. Its ugly rival always took a full 9 minutes. The temperature controls on the Super Grill are also more precise with a more pronounced increase when turning up its settings.

Another marked difference was that the Super Grill has an obviously higher maximum temperature. When grilling, a high temperature is key to browning. If the temperature isn't sufficient at first contact, burgers come out slightly grey and chicken breasts end up looking a bit yellow. The Super Grill gets hot enough to brown food to provide that all important, appetite enhancing, finished appearance often missing when grilling indoors.

A great feature sorely missing from many of its rivals is the Super Grill's ability to open up completely. Many indoor grills only allow full contact grilling where the food cooks in between upper and lower grilling surfaces.

The Super Grill's design allows it to be completely opened so that both plates are available as bottom cooking surfaces. The amount of food that can be cooked at one time is doubled by the Super Grill.

The Super Grill is for home use only, but it feels like professional grade. Compared to the almost same sized rival grill we recently decommissioned, the Super Grill is noticeably heavier and appears to be of a sturdier design. One thing we noticed when contact grilling is that the upper plate rests heavier and more securely when closed atop chicken breasts. Our last grill's top plate wobbled about a bit when closed and didn't rest heavy enough against the food to provide sufficient grill marks.

Besides the two cooking plates that make grilling marks, there is a smooth faced grill plate that can be used to cook pancakes, fry eggs, etc. The remaining two plates included with the grill are for making waffles. All plates are non-stick and dishwasher safe.

Regarding the non-stick surfaces being dishwasher safe, from experience I have to recommend hand washing. The Super Grill may very well have plates with a non-stick surface coating superior to its rivals, but I'm not taking the chance because I really want to keep this grill in operation for a long, long time.

It's been my experience that using the dishwasher to repeatedly clean non-stick coated surfaces can result in blistering and flaking. The plates from our previous grill were also marked as dishwasher safe, but over time the destruction of the coating rendered the plates almost unusable without heavy applications of spray oil, like Pam.

I have a really easy way to keep grill plates clean without subjecting them to the potential harm of automatic dish-washing. Immediately after using your grill, unplug it from the wall. Soak a paper towel and squeeze out the excess water. Quickly lay the paper towel flat on the bottom grill surface and close the top. The resulting steam loosens up most stuck bits. Once the grill has completely cooled, open it and use the paper towel to wipe the plates fully clean.

While I'm rating the Super Grill as worthy of Five Stars, it does have a couple of minor negatives. The first is grease drainage. Many of its competitors have drip pans that run the full width of the unit allowing grease to more easily drain. The Super Grill has much more attractive drip containers, but the grease is channeled to one small area from which to drain. The result is that less grease drains while cooking.

The other improvement that I would like to see is to simply include another of the flat surfaced grilling pans. Obviously, two plates are required to cook waffles and two with grill lines are needed for full contact grilling. The manufacturer probably figured (rightly) that only one plate was necessary to cook eggs and such since one wouldn't do so with the grill in the closed operating position. However, an extra flat grill plate would conveniently double the amount of space available if one was in the mood to cook up a whole mess of pancakes at once.

All in all, the minor detractions noted are minute takeaways. After having owned four previous grills by two other manufacturers, I can most assuredly state that you will realize a huge bang from your buck by buying The Sharper Image's "Super Grill."

Now.. Who else is hungry? Happy grilling!

The unit cooks great....I found it to cook evenly on both sides.Love the interchangable plates. But the instruction booklet is more about covering the Sharper Image for legal liabilities than it is actual instructions for the user.I did not even know it had an articulating hinge until I discovered it on my own by looking at the pictures on the box and on the web.The booklet said nothing about it.That's why it only gets 4 stars. However, I would recommend purchase of this product.Another qwirk is that the unit only comes with one flat interchangable plate. So if you want to cook eggs or pancakes on both sides with the unit flat in the wide open position, you can only cook those items on one flat side the other side will be a raised grill plate.Don't know who came up with that brilliant idea....not a cook!

My wife was wanting a waffle iron, but I wanted something more.As a kid, we had one that was a waffle iron/griddle.It could be used as a waffle iron (of course) or could be opened all the way, the plates flipped and the other side was a smooth grill plate. We always used it for pancakes.I was looking for something similar. After looking at several others, I found this at a local chain store.

Upon first inspection, I had a problem with was the instruction booklet.Though the English is decent, it doesn't tell you much. The only thing it is good for is the legal stuff and to show you how to change the cooking plates. As far as giving instruction about how to cook with it, you can discern just about as much by looking at the controls.Because the instructions don't give any clue as to where to put the controls for different kinds of meats, sandwiches or whatever it is that you're wanting to cook, it's all guess work.I've only had it for a couple weeks, so I haven't used it enough to know where to set it.The plates fit loosely.I don't know if it actually makes any difference, if not, it just looks sloppy. Finally, as a waffle iron/grill, it doesn't heat evenly. The top plate does not get as hot as the bottom, therefore the bottom of the waffle gets brown before the top.I have yet to use it as a griddle, so I don't know how well the Left side controls work.

So far I must rate this product as OK.It does what it says it will do (as far as I have used it) but as with a lot of more modern products, the workmanship is sloppy and is indicative of being a product of overseas manufacture.

()Don't let my title fool you, I really like this grill press.

I've cooked several meals in it since we got it and used all of the grill plates except for the waffle plates which we plan to use this week.

First of all it's nice looking. I really like stainless steel appliances so this fits.

It's very simple, while I read the manual before I did anything, my wife figured it out on her own and with the exception of one minor hang up she was able to make her Panini without any hassle.

The 3 knobs on the front are for heating the grill press while it's opened and closed, the knob in the middle determines which way you'll be using the press (again, opened or closed) and the 2 on the sides are the heat controls, one for opened and one for closed. That's it.

Getting the plates on and off is pretty easy, they do seem to get caught at the edge when trying to take them off so a little wiggle is required, I'm sure with time I'll figure it out though, I wouldn't dismiss user error on this one.

Getting it to lean back flat is controlled by a little lever on the handle, very easy to use.

But here's the little annoyance, when you're cooking something that is too thick to let the press close in the normal position the top plate needs to swivel, which it can do but not with out pushing it forward a bit to disengage it from the handle. There is no button or lever for this just a small amount of effort to push it forward a bit at the top.

The problem is that by the time you realize you need to do that the grill is probably already hot. And while the handle stays perfectly cool, the plate (inside and out) does not! In fact the outside top of the grill gets pretty darn hot.

So the solution is to disengage it before you start heating or to use a spoon or something to push it forward, I guess a hot pad would work too.

Again it's a minor annoyance but it seemed like with such a well thought out little grill press this would be a no brainer.

The plates are non stick, so they clean up easy but can't be soaked or put in the dishwasher. They do come with a little plastic scraper that works ok but doesn't really seem to fit in the grooves correctly (my second annoyance). I just let it cool down and hit it with a wet sponge and then paper towel.

So far nothing has gotten stuck despite the fact that I've had cheese burn to the surface. Once it was cooled the cheese came right off.

As I mentioned I've cooked several meals on it and definitely come to some conclusions.

In a kitchen it is pointless to use the griddle part of this grill press. If you have a large skillet this press is no substitute. It's small and the edges are annoying when trying to use a spatula.

I cooked up eggs and ham on it for breakfast one morning and while it did an excellent job I really prefer my big skillet so I probably wont be using it for pancakes or eggs anymore. If you were somewhere that you didn't have a stove or a proper skillet and had thought to bring this along it would be a great travel tool. Thought it only comes with one griddle plate. The grill plate side worked great for cooking up ham and the grooves would also be perfect for bacon and getting rid of the grease.

The "drip trays" if that's what you wanna call them are basically plastic measuring cups, not a big deal since they work but make sure the grill is turned so they're facing away from you while you cook. They look like they'd be really easy to knock over.

Where this press shines is grilling meat and my favorite, Panini's!

I've probably made about 10 panini's in this thing since I got it, they come out perfect. Bread is crispy and browned and the insides are gooey and hot... man... so good. They also cook up fast since you're hitting em from both sides so you'll want to be careful, I set it to 2 for mine and start checking as soon as I hear the butter sizzle. You get nice grill marks too.

I imagine the waffles are going to come out pretty good as well but I'll update this review as soon as we test it.

The only other thing I feel I should mention is the size.

It's not a monstrosity or anything but if you live in a small apartment or have limited counter space you may think twice about this model. It's big enough to monopolize some counter space or a good chunk of your cabinet space when you're not using it. It's about 14" wide and a little over a foot deep, which means when it's open it's over 2 feet long. Also the handle can't be folded down for storage so it's gunna stick up about 8".

Again, it's not huge, but it's not compact either.

I also worry about storing the plates so I kept the cardboard sleeves they came in to try and keep them from getting scratched. Woulda been nice if the sleeves were designed to stay closed so you could use them for storing vertically. The backs are unfinished steel so if you laid them against the non-stick surface on the fronts of the other plates... well your plates would get ruined pretty quick.

I guess it goes without saying that you should only use wood or nylon utensils with non-stick appliances but.. well.. there, I've said it.

So to recap

PRO'S

Looks nice

Easy to use

Easy to clean

Non stick surfaces work really well

Cooks evenly and well.

Handle stays perfectly cool

Works as a waffle iron, grill, grill press and a griddle

CONS

Disengaging the top plate needs to be done ahead of time and by hand

Grill scraper doesn't really work

Drip trays "cups" are kinda cheap and could easily be knocked over if you aren't careful

Griddle option seems kinda pointless in a kitchien

Big, takes up a lot of counter/cabinet space

Stacking the stored plates will scratch them so you'll need to keep the cardboard sleeves or find some of your own.

All in all the pro's heavily outweigh the cons for me, I really like this press and the rest of my nit picks seem like things that Sharper Image can probably iron out with little effort in their next model. But for now this one is great and we are happy to have it in our home.

[UPDATE]

I promised an update so here it is;

Since we got the press I've made hamburgers and waffles on it and it worked out great. The waffles are awesome and the non-stick was nice. They popped right out and on the couple of occasions where they stuck we just nudged them with a spatula and they came loose without an issue. I recommend setting it a bit hot, like 2.5 or maybe even 3 so you get the crispy outsides before the insides start to dry out too much. It took a few tries but we got them fluffy in the middle with a nice golden crisp on the outside. Excellent waffles!

I guess one thing I'll note is that while making burgers the grease didn't run out as easily or quickly as I'd hoped. This could totally be my counter top, it may lean back a bit, but the grease pooled up closer to the back of the plate when it should have run out the front and into the drip cup. I ended up having to lift the unit a bit and guide the grease to the front with my spatula. Kind of a pain but again, I don't know that I can blame the press here. Still, it's something to keep an eye on if you get one.

Regardless making burgers in a press was pretty sweet! Cooked just right, nice and flat, good grill marks. Everyone involved was happy.

Even after burgers cleaning was simple, hot water and a sponge, done.

()I don't have any other grills in this price range to compare this to, but there are several design flaws in this product that, if I had known about them before hand, would have led me to a different product.I hope they will help you make an informed decision.

Pros: (Most of which are in the features)

1. Very attractive with a brushed steel top and a powdered steel base.

2. Interchangeable plates (2x grill, 2x waffle, 1x griddle?)

3. Can be used as a Paninni press.

4. Can be used completely open, or closed.

Cons:

1. Uneven heating: According to the instructions the top plate should heat to a lower temperature than the bottom.Repeated tests using an infrared thermometer indicated that the top plate would get about 50 degrees hotter than the bottom plate.Heat was also much greater around the edges of the plates than in the center, with a difference of close to 40 degrees between the edges and the center.

2. Low Hi heat setting: The high heat for the open grill or griddle is only 370 degrees, which is really low for grilling.

3. Dial for the closed grill is labeled Min, 1-3 and Max, instead ofnumbers instead of degree markers, meaning that you cannot easily tell what temperature your cooking at.Moreover, the min setting maintained heats of around ~110 degrees which is insufficent for cooking or even for heating.

4.No indication as to the correct setting for waffles etc: Usually on something like this the instructions will tell you, use 3 for waffles, and max for steaks.Or, set it to 2 for thin fish etc.Nothing like that here.

5.Poorly designed drip control: On my unit the grease from cooking meat never actually traveled to the drip channel, instead bubbling out the front. Moreover, on the griddle setting large liquid batches were difficult to contain, frequently running towards the channel.

6. Only one griddle plate: Really? why? I just don't get why they only included 1 plate, you can't even buy a second one.

7. No replacement plates available: As with all nonstick products this grill will only last (safely) as long as the non-stick coating lasts.Normally when something has interchangable plates you would expect to be able to replace a damaged plate, but there doesn't seem to be anyplace to buy additional plates.I searched extensively for a source, and didn't find anything. If somebody does know please post it in the comments.Otherwise, make sure not to scratch anything.

8. No indication as to whether or not this product is dishwasher safe:I searched the whole manual, it doesn't say. And, since you can't replace damaged plates... you better not risk it.

9. Provided scraper doesn't fit the grill gaps:I tried to use the provided scraper to clean the grill but the gaps aren't wide enough so the tines don't come close to scraping in between the groves on the grill.Essentially this piece is useless.

10.The brushed steel of the lid shows every greasy smudge that comes in contact with it: In the scheme of things, not really a problem.

All in all, I just felt like this grill felt short. The combination of inconsistent cooking temperatures, and annoyance with cleaning procedures/fear over scratches, means that I rarely use this.I find that I'm much more likely to turn on the oven, or use the toaster oven than I am to grill on this guy.I do occasionally use it as a Panini press, but otherwise, I really don't use it.In short if you need a tabletop grill, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
