Scanpan Professional Fry Pan
Pros:
Great non-stick when I make omelets, I don't need any butter at all. Burgers, chicken, steak, etc. don't stick at all.
Cleanup the surface is so non-stick that a simple wipe with a paper towel gets it visibly clean; followed by a little soapy water, and you're done.
Easy to hold it's well balanced, nice heft, and the handle is well shaped, it's very comfortable to work with.
Even heating the pan heats up *very* evenly.
A pan I can put in the oven unlike many non-sticks and many cheaper pans that have plastic handles, you can put all the Scanpan Professional pans in the oven when needed without worry. The pan even came with a little pot holder that slips over the handle for when you use it this way.
The handle doesn't heat up on the stove even though it's metal and riveted to the pan with large metal rivets, the handle stays cool and comfortable to use.
Looks great the stainless handle and the all-black pan just plain looks good.
Cons:
Dishwasher while Scanpan calls these pans "dishwasher safe" it's also "not recommended" that you put them in the washer. I tried it once and got a little of the outside black coating to come off not so it was noticeable, but I got a little bit of black dust on the towel. According to Scanpan, repeated washings will cause spotting and splotching. The good news is that it cleans so easily that it's not a deal killer.
Purchasing simply getting a hold of some of the pieces can be a challenge. I had to wait nearly 4 weeks for the 12 1/4" fry pan to come in as nobody in the country seemed to have it. Additionally, you're local stores probably aren't going to carry Scanpan, so if you're impatient, you're just going to have to learn to live with waiting for your cookware.
Price this is not inexpensive cookware. It's not outrageous lesser brands cost nearly as much but to outfit a kitchen is going to cost you somewhat over $1k by the time you're done (for what I want, I'm just over $1,500, for example). Do what I do and buy a piece a month or so and it's not that painful though.
Lids this is a personal choice, so it may not be a con for you, but I like glass lids not the type Scanpan puts on the classic line, but the type they put on the CTX line. Well, the professional line only has stainless lids. I'd buy CTX lids instead, but the CTX line is *very* limited and they just don't have all the lids I'd need. But, if you like stainless lids, or just don't care, this wouldn't be a con for you.
Rivets this is both a good news/bad news item on one hand, the rivets assure that the handle won't come loose; they hold the pan well and make sure you get a long life out of the pan. The bad is that food can collect on them that needs some vigorous scrubbing to come off. So far, I've not needed to use a toothpick to get the food off the perimeter of the rivets, but it wouldn't surprise me if at some point I make something that does require it.
So, all in all, this pan is the best fry pan I've ever had and all the other brands I've got are going to be getting donated away over the next few months as I completely replace them with Scanpan products.After reading all of the good reviews I decided to get this pan.If I really liked it I was also going to purchase the chef's set of other pans.When it arrived I was so excited.I had been using a cheap omelet pan that all of the teflon had worn off and I was ready to invest in some good pans.Two things I found out.If you put veggies in your omelet and they touch the pan it will stick, but it cleaned up easily.I had to put a teaspoon of butter in.Second the rivets stick out and food collects around them so I have to take a toothpick to them occasionally.One of the rivets started moving, which I don't believe it is supposed to do.I called Scanpan 3 times so far and keep getting an answering machine.I leave a message but no one calls me back.I will try again today.I am deliberating if I should get the classic in the other pans but I hate the glass lids and this problem with Customer service is leaving me leery of making another purchase with this company.
Update.On the last call I was able to get a hold of customer service.The return was easy and the pan was replaced quickly.We ended up purchasing the 10 piece professional set and have been thrilled with how easy these pans are to cook with. We have not had any additional problems and I have recommended these pans to several of my friends and family.The only thing I would not recommend is buying the pasta insert.Anytime I use it water boils up all over my stove.I have tried to put less water in until there is not enough water to cook the pasta.I am now using it as a strainer in my sink.

With a lot of non-stick pans on the market right now, I wasn't sure how ScanPan would be much different than the rest. After using this almost daily for the last few months, I can say that this pan has far exceeded any expectations I've ever had for a piece of cookware.The surface is so tough, you can use it worry free with metal utensils, and they even suggest giving your pan a cold water blast right after use to steam clean. No other non-stick pan would ever tell you to do this. Most of the time, a simple wipe with a paper towel is all the cleaning you need.
I'm able to use so much less oil in my cooking, and yet still produce flawless golden brown color on meat and fish. Eggs are a piece of cake, too!
These pans look quite impressive as well, and would be at home in any well appointed kitchen. All of this being said, they throw in a lifetime warranty on top of it. I'm sold!

I gave this pan a 5 star rating when I first started using it.I was looking for something instead of Teflon pans that I had to keep replacing as they degraded with use.Initially the pan performed beautifully.I noted, for example, how I had to chase eggs around the pan because my spatula pushed them rather than slipping under them.It was not much later, however, that I noticed that it did not cook omelets well.They tended to stick and I still needed my Teflon pan for those.Overtime the situation has gotten much worse.Now I need to use it as I would any ordinary pan with olive oil to keep things from sticking.It's still an ok regular pan, which is why I still give it two stars--an ok pan but no longer does what it is supposed to do.Want Scanpan Professional Fry Pan Discount?
My girlfriend has cystic fifrosis and is understandably cautious about her health.She wanted a nonstick pan that didn't use teflon and release the toxin PFOA.I did a pretty extensive search on line for green products and consumer reviews.This pan does not use teflon and tied with two other makes in Consumer Report for the highest non-stick rating.I bought the smallest, least expensive one for a trial run.This pan has been great!We have cooked eggs, onions, even cornbread in this pan and nothing has sticked.We have also used conventional metal utensils with out a mark.This pan has deivered on all it's claims.We couldn't be happier and plan to buy more to add to the set.The only downside is that these are expensive but is worth it since you don't have to treat it delicately.

I was worried about a friend of mine coming for a visit this weekend and not having an ashtray for her (to smoke outside, of course). I certainly didn't want her to have to use my dishes for that purpose. Then this came. It's perfect, and I know it'll clean up just fine when she's done with it.
There's nothing like seasoned cast iron in the kitchen. Those who have never owned much cast iron might think you can wash it in soapy water or in the dishwasher, but that ruins the seasoning. If yours has gotten rusty, scour it good with one of those green scouring pads with just water. Next time you bake something in the oven, sit your cast iron in there, too, and let it just bake for a while. Then take it out and, when cool enough to the touch, oil it with vegetable oil, working the oil into it with your fingers, then wipe off any excess. Stick it back into the still-hot oven and leave it there; it will come out black and beautiful, non-stick, and resistant to rusting as long as you dry it well if it gets wet and wipe (or scour) out any food using only water. (Trust me: This will not kill you.) Keep handling it this way, and the more you use it, the more beautiful and easy-care it will be.i got this because my previous spoon rest was a hideous plate that i just decided i couldn't stand looking at any more.it is very cute, and has little spoon slots, making it the perfect shape for a spoon rest.
i have only 2 complaints:surprisingly (my nitpicky complaint that i knew i was getting into) it's a little too small.my stove is fairly large (but not unusually so), and this thing looks pretty silly being so little.i would prefer it to be, say, 4 or 5 inches rather than 3.
**But my bigger complaint is that the bottom for some reason got a little rusty and left rust marks on the stove.i am able to get them up, so no permanent damage to the stove, but the pan is a little worse for the experience.now i will need to put something under it, but what?and, thats a bit of a pain.

There is only one recipe included with the pan Buttermilk Pancakes so if specialty pancakes are desired, recipes will need to be obtained elsewhere (many are available on-line.) I've used the pan for blueberry, sweet potato and sour dough pancakes with great success. And, as with all non-stick pans, do not use metal utensils or harsh scouring pads on the surface and be sure to keep the heat medium-low, never on high. And, although the pan is non-stick, brush with oil before each use.
I received this pan as a gift and wondered if it would be relegated to the back of the cabinet, taken out once a year, but I've actually been using it at least once a week to prepare both pancakes and eggs. The compartment is exactly the right size to make a perfect round circle of scrambled eggs for an English muffin breakfast sandwich.
The pan also works well for mini-crepes. Tiny desserts are a favorite because the indulgence is small. I used hazelnut spread as the filling and added a small scoup of vanilla bean ice cream to the plate (whipped cream would work well, too) and drizzled a little chocolate sauce over the top and it was a tiny confection that no one at dinner could refuse. Seconds? Why not!
As with all Nordic Ware merchandise, it is made in the USA. It is a high quality pan and with proper care, should last a lifetime.I am an old-fashioned guy who prefers iron for cooking but when I could not find an iron pancake pan I settled on this and found that it works just fine.

Lodge Logic L5SK3 Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Skillet, 8-inch
I recently added two of these 8" skillets to my collection. I had been eyeing them for my daily single-sized omelets (I plan to wait until the skillets are a bit more seasoned before attempting to cook eggs in them), but every day I think of countless new uses for them. They are perfect for:
a single, perfect grilled-cheese sandwich
heating up last night's left-overs
sauteing baby portabella mushrooms as a side dish for dinner
skillet creme brulee or blackberry cobbler with ice cream for dinner guests each guest gets their own perfectly-sized skillet
quesadillas
huuuuuge, perfectly-shaped sourdough pancakes, made one at a time (or two at a time if you have two of these handy skillets!)
crepes
tapas... get several of these for several types of tapas and serve right in the skillet

and so much more... I really wish I'd known about these when I was single. I would have eaten so much better! But, they come in so handy as junior companions to my 12" workhorse skillet and my two-burner reversible grill/griddle, I am happy to make up lost time with these little gems.
At $10 and change, I recommend you purchase as many as there are members of your family. Or if you're single, buy two... so you can impress dates by serving individual-sized appetizers or dessert! Then ask for two more for Christmas, so you can add a fun, gourmet twist to your dinner parties.
As with all cast iron, even though this is pre-seasoned, it's a good idea to season it again yourself before using. Generally you don't use soap or detergent on cast iron (and NEVER put cast iron in the dishwasher!!), but when I first get a new piece, I hand-wash it with hot water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap. Dry it thoroughly with a dish towel... then, to remove any remaining water that has been absorbed, put it on the stove or in a hot oven for a few minutes so that any remaining water will evaporate.
Then, coat with a *light* coating of grapeseed oil or organic vegetable shortening. Turn the oven on 400 (or higher, if you dare!) degrees. Put your new skillet into the oven upside-down and line the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil to catch any drips. "Bake" for 1-2 hours. Turn the oven off, then leave the skillets in all night to cool and solidify. Your skillet will have a deeper hue and glossy sheen that it didn't have when you bought it. This will make it a bit more naturally non-stick. The more you use it (or if you want, you can repeat the above seasoning process), the more non-stick it will become.
With proper care, cast iron will become your most well-loved cookware. I'm so excited to have added two of these 8" skillets to my Lodge cast iron collection and can't wait to come up with even more uses for these adorable, super-handy little skillets!I cook for myself, so this little skillet is the perfect size for 3-egg omelet in the morning, or veggie saute for dinner. I am a small to medium sized female w/ skinny arms, but this skillet is not too heavy so I can still lift it w/ one arm. It's not really non-stick because the eggs won't easily slide off the pan like they would from a good new non-stick pan, but it's much much better compared w/ my stainless steel skillets. As long as you soak the pan in water after cooking, by the time you finish your meal, the food residue can be easily washed off with a brush or sponge. I use a nylon dish brush with hot water and cleaning is very fast and easy. I never use soap or steel wool. Leaving a bit grease on acts like re-seasoning. This is the same way I take care of my carbon-steel wok. The only complaint I have is that the handle is way too short. The skillet is relatively heavy but even with my small hands it still feels as if the handle only fits half of my palm, so it forces your hand to hold it really close to the hot pan really bad design. Though I use it everyday and find it indispensable, the short handle alone is why I am unwilling to give it a five star rating.

After struggling with a set of three regular cast iron pans from a different manufacturer, I finally boxed them up for Goodwill.I never mastered the seasoning part of cast iron usage.I ended up with a sticky residue and one pan rusted.After about three attempts of scouring and reseasoning, I gave up and ordered three Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned skillets.
It is fanstastic.It worked like a charm with the first use -no problems with sticking at all.I actually smiled while making my burger!My cornbread was also back up to Southern standards thanks to my 10-inch pan.
The 10-inch works well for cornbread and frying.(Actually cast iron is the only way to make good cornbread.) I use the 8 for single burgers.The 6 I bought out of habit, but it also works well for single burgers.
Clean up is relatively easy.Wash with hot water; Lodge does not recommend using soap.Dry thoroughly.I then heat mine on the stove top, turn off the heat, add a tablespoon of oil and use a paper towel to spread the oil on the entire pan inside and out.After the pan cools, I wipe away any excess oil and store the pan.
For anyone who wants a head start on leaving heirloom cast iron pans, I strongly suggest this product.

I own 2 of these little pans, 1 of them for over 30 years & the other had been my mom's for many years beyond that.Had I known back then what I know now (how many times have we all said that?), I would have bought mostly cast iron instead of all the other cookware.It does take a little time to properly care for cast iron but it's sooooo worth it to me.These cast iron skillets turn out a great grilled cheese sandwich, too!Just use a lid on the pan & be sure to cook only on medium-low heat.Several years ago my mom gave me a wonderful recipe (see below) to make cornbread on the stovetop in the 8" skillet using a lid, flipping the cake over once the batter looks almost done to cook the other side.You have to use 2 spatulas to flip it (the reason for using the 8" skillet).I tried flipping a 10" ONCE & found it takes a better woman than I to get that right!This technique makes a more moist & better cornbread according to my DH & me. Another added benefit is that you don't have to heat up the oven/kitchen.
In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of **self-rising white or yellow cornmeal, 1 Tbs. sugar (optional).In a separate small bowl, whip 1 egg with fork & stir in 2/3 cup milk.Add egg/milk mixture to cornmeal.Stir together just until all is moist.Melt 1 to 2 Tbs. shortening in skillet over medium heat.Sprinkle pan with cornmeal (not too thick) stirring to brown it.This will give you a crustier side.Lower heat to medium-low & add batter to pan and cover.Check batter & once it's looking a little more done than a pancake would, flip the cake using 2 sturdy nylon spatulas.I prefer to cover after flipping & it will be done in less than 5 more minutes.For crustier bread leave lid off after flipping.**Or use regular cornmeal with 2 tsp. aluminum free baking powder, 3/4 tsp. salt in place of self-rising I'm sort of guessing at these amounts as a replacement for self-rising.

My DH laughs at me because of my admiration of raw cast iron, enameled cast iron and how I care for them.I now have 2-10", 1-12", the biscuit pan, muffin pans, as well as the Lodge Pizza Pan.The pizza pan makes a wonderful crust.If we have left over pizza, we melt butter in one of the larger skillets over medium heat.Put 2 or 3 slices in & cover with a lid.Reduce heat to medium low.It will take just a little patience but it will taste as if it were fresly baked.You'll probably stop warming pizza in the microwave.

Another reviewer mentioned roasted potatoes.I agree, this is the perfect little skillet for a single serving size of potatoes.Try this recipe for a late night snack:
1 baking potato
2 or 3 unpeeled garlic cloves, (optional)
1 pat of butter
Shredded cheddar cheese
Olive oil
Salt & pepper to taste
Wash potato and cut in half lengthwise.Cut the pat of butter in half and place in skillet. Put a potato half, cut side down, on top of each piece.Lightly coat the garlic cloves with olive oil.Place cloves in skillet.Place skillet in oven and bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes or until tender.The cut portion of the potato will brown and crisp.Remove potato halves and garlic from skillet.Carefully remove garlic skin. Make a slit in the cut portion of the potato halves.Add garlic if using and season to taste with additional butter, salt and pepper.Top with cheddar cheese.
I make this in my 8 inch cast iron skillet a lot. It's the perfect size for single serving meals and snacks.It also makes the best hash browns and since it's not that heavy and already preseasoned, you can flip the hash browns like the pro's!
The 8" and 6" cast iron skillets are also great for tapas. Set them on trivets and serve right at the table.

The sides are not as sloped and steep as on many other cast iron skillets but is sufficient for frying, browning etc. with no problems.It does the standard cast iron cooking with no problems--hold heat well etc.
One of the most beautifully made modern cast iron pans I have seen yet.I want more...My husband is the cook in our family and he loves to use iron cookware. I bought this pan for him and it's a pan, loved that it came preseasoned. If you're looking for a good quality cast iron skillet this one is a good buy.

This is a basic cast ion skillet. It is not as even as I thought it would be. There is still some grain-age on the surface, so I am not sure what other reviewers meant when they said that the surface is quite smooth. Maybe their came from a different batch.It says per-seasoned, but we rubbed some oil in it and set on a store at high temperature, rubbed some more, and the paper-towel with oil turned a bit dark. Granted, it was not too bad, but the color was still there.

This item is "Made in China". It is "Winware-USA" not "Made In USA". IMHO the product presentation is misleading in this respect. Pricey for a Chinese made stainless fry pan.

5) Are priced right so that if they are damaged we're not out a lot of $$$.
We needed 2 additional pans, however since they were priced 3 for 4 we bought more.

I have three of these pans (different sizes) and I do not have a single complaint. Heat is consistent, clean-up is easy and it does the work in a superior fashion. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to spend ridiculous $$$$ on 'Big Name' pans when this is all any chef would need. LOOKS:
***** Paula Deen. These pans are simply gorgeous. I have the Blueberry Speckle, and it's a very pretty blue porcelain with a black non-stick interior.
**** Cast Iron. Even when it's new, there's nothing gorgeous about cast iron. Heft is its middle name.
HANDLES:
***** Paula Deen. The rubber-ized handle matches the blue exterior. It is non-slip and comfortable to hold. And, it doesn't get hot. You do have to be more careful that the handle doesn't wander over a heat source, though, as it would be damaged. The handle is solidly riveted to the pan with two rivets. It could come loose eventually or with banging around, but it isn't put together in a flimsy manner.
***** Cast Iron. The handle gets very hot, but it's also indestructible and part & parcel with the bowl of the pan. No separation anxiety.
HOW FOODS FRY:
The Paula Deen heats up a little faster than the cast iron, and cools down faster than the cast iron.
***** Paula Deen. No oil needed for either the eggs or the burger. The eggs cooked beautifully with no browning around the edges. If you LIKE a fried egg with crisp edges, then this may not be the pan for you. The burger browned nicely. Eggs and burger released for serving perfectly and smoothly.
**** Cast Iron. At least a minimum brushing of oil is needed for both eggs and the burger. Eggs more likely to brown unless you're watching carefully and use more oil. Burgers brown nicely. Food definitely doesn't slide off the pan like with a non-stick. The need for oil could be a concern if counting calories or watching cholesterol.
PAN STABILITY:
*** Paula Deen. Maybe it's because I'm used to my cast iron pans which I have in sizes both bigger and smaller than the Paula Deen 10" and 8". I have a gas stovetop, and I was annoyed when I couldn't flip the egg or flip the burger without holding onto the fry pan handle. When I tried to flip them one-handed, as I always do with the cast-iron pan, the Paula Deen pan skittered off to the side of the burner and the bowl tilted up (the handle tilted down). Perhaps you are saying, "Well, get a grip, and use the handle like you're supposed to." I'm not arguing with that, but I'm spoiled by the cast iron pans and I got annoyed.
Even just sitting on the stovetop, it is easier to tip than most pans. Maybe the handle is too heavy for the base.
The 10" pan, by my measurements, is: 9.75" diameter at the top rim; 6.5" diameter for the flat bottom; 7" handle.
The 8" pan, by my measurements, is: 8" diameter at the top rim; 5.5" diameter for the flat bottom; 6 1/8" handle length.
***** Cast Iron. Stays where you put it, whether you are flipping or stirring.
This fault is the reason I took one star off my overall rating of the two Paula Deen fry pans I have. The handle seems too heavy or the body is not heavy enough, to counterweight each other.
FRY TEMPERATURE:
**** Paula Deen. This is non-stick. Per the instructions that came with the fry pans, you can use "low to medium heat only". You cannot do a proper high-heat stir-fry in a non-stick pan. Due to the rubber-like handle, the Paula Deen fry pans are oven safe to only 350 degrees. However, these restrictions apply to all non-stick brands, so it wasn't a deduction from my overall rating. I've just deducted a star for this comparison.
Please also note that any PTFE non-stick pan has a caveat for cooking with "birds or small pets in or near the kitchen". The nonstick coating can "emit fumes harmful to birds", even if you are NOT using a high heat. In particular, though, smoke from burning foods or overheated oils (including butter) "will create dangerous fumes which a bird's respiratory system cannot handle". This is covered in the Paula Deen instructions that came with the fry pans.
***** Cast Iron. Can take any temperature you throw at it. This includes any oven temperature.
CLEANUP:

***** Cast Iron. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it, but I find cast-iron easy to clean. A metal mesh scrubber and hot water takes off everything without hurting the pan. (You don't use soap on cast-iron, as the soap can be absorbed by the pan and affect the taste of food cooked afterwards.) Not dishwasher safe, as you'll get rust on it and it probably won't get all the food off it anyway. (Rust is just scrubbed off.)
Overall, the Paula Deen pans are lovely and work the way non-stick is supposed to work. I'm not throwing out my cast-iron, though!
()I own some very inexpensive non-stick pans and one high-end, very expensive non-stick pan, and these pans compare as you would expect them to at this price point.
These Paula Deen pans are of a good but not excellent quality and feel a little light. The non-stick surface has worked as well as my high-end pan for a while though I can tell it is starting to wear after just a couple of months'use with only plastic/silicone utensils.
Where these pans set themselves apart is their appearance and if you have a country kitchen or a hanging pot rack where your pans are exposed these are a fantastic choice. I haven't seen any pans as attractive as these before and the finish is very durable. So if you need some non-stick pans but can't go high-end I think these are a good purchase though not necessarily a better purchase than a less-expensive version at a big box store.If you're trying to find something that is unique and will look fantastic in your kitchen then these are an attractive kitchen accessory.

()Given the other positive reviews, it's possible I received a defective product. However, I just cannot recommend these pans.
The main problem is the handle, which is extremely heavy in comparison to the pan itself. On my coil stove top, the handle end, especially on the small pan, presses down on the coil much more than the other end because the pan is always on the verge of tilting toward the handle due to its heavy weight. Setting it on a flat surface, I find I can just barely touch the end of the handle with the tip of my finger and cause the pan to tilt, so the issue isn't with my coils. It is definitely with the pan. Because of the imbalance, cooking is uneven. I had reasonable success with a single burger patty, though I noticed on grilled cheese the side that didn't sit firmly on the stove didn't brown as quickly.
I've used a variety of brands of pans, the cheaper kinds all the way to a few higher end, expensive pans. These Paula Deen pans were about on par with the low price discount store pans as far as performance, though they look nicer and will probably last longer.
I would LOVE the heavy handles if the pans themselves were equally weighted to provide the proper balance. The grip is nice, plus a nice appearance.

()These very attractive non-stick fry pans cook evenly and gave my fried eggs a nice crisp edge.Chicken tenders and sautéed vegetables came out well too.Loved the handle.It's padded, a good size, doesn't get hot, and overall has a very nice feel to it with an interesting shape that's very comfortable.The pans wash easily and well, which by the way, I did by hand.I don't put them in the dishwasher. Assuming, and I am, that they last a good long time, I highly recommend them.

However, when I tried cooking things like sausage, or stir-fry meat, or with any sauces that contained sugar, I ended up with charred bits that would not come off. I tried boiling the pan with vinegar, or scouring gently with baking soda and nothing works. I did of course follow the directions and have never cooked on any setting above medium (usually, I use medium low). Then I made the mistake of frying falafel in the pan. I now have a permanent layer of caramelized oil on the bottom of my pan. Add the two chips on the handle that came off within the first week of use (and I am extremely gentle with this pan), and I would have to say I am fairly disappointed.
I also own the Lodge Enamel 6 quart dutch oven, and that item is fabulous. Not a chip or stain on it, even though I use it extensively. Also, I have fried up some of the same things in the dutch oven as the fry pan with no sticking/stains in the dutch oven, but with permanently charred bits in the fry pan. Lodge should have made this one with the glossy interior.

Now one down side is that this thing is heavy as hell.Without the helper handle it would be very awkward to lift unless you are built like Arnold Schwarzenegger (at least how he used to be built).This isn't for your grandmother (unless she is a weightlifter).
An update.We have had absolutely no sticking problems.We cooked a salmon dish last night with a sauce that had some sugar in it.No problems (and absolutely delicious BTW) .A chicken dish with ricotta, the other day, worked great.I use a little higher heat, up to medium high, then slow it down to medium when browning.Let the food release before flipping.
No soaking, no scrubbing, just the plastic thing (on the other side of the kitchen sponges, can't think of the name), hot water, dish soap and almost no elbow grease.
I'd say it is a bargain.We have mostly Calphalon in our kitchen but are using this extensively.It looks good too.

Pretty good pan.A lot easier to maintain and keep clean than a traditional cast iron pan.The "white enamel" style fry pans are more non-stick than this with liquid items like eggs.The "satin enamel" finish in this one, which is a rough cast iron type finish with a dark gray enamel coating, tends to stick less on solid items like steak and bacon.
So you may use a little more fat in this pan than in one of the ones using a smooth bottom white enamel style, which all of the other Lodge pans use.
This type of finish is also going to be a lot harder to scratch or scrape with tools, and wont show a scratch as much.
If you're going to cook cornbread and scrambled eggs 95% of the time...I might consider one of the white smooth enamel bottom.If you're going to sear a lot of meats and dont mind using a bit of fat with your cornbread or eggs, this will work great and you cant beat the price.

When I received this pan the inside enamel was very rough. I knew this would be the case based on other reviews so it was not a shocker. On first use, there was barely any sticking. However when trying to dry the pan after washing, I notice the rough texture was causing paper towel and terry towel "bits" to get left behind on the pan. So I decided to "season" the pan. Best decision ever.My process (as described by another reviewer)
1. Pre-heat the pan (to a low temp in oven or on stovetop), just barely hot to the touch
2. Thin coat of canola oil rubbed onto the pan
3.Put pan back on stovetop and turn the heat to medium (maybe slightly over)
4. Once pan starts to smoke, turn down the heat slightly and let it continue to smoke for 15 minutes
5. Let the pan cool, rub it down with a dry paper bowl
6. Repeat process until smooth finish
The pan is now flawless

This is a decent pan but it's not a substitute for real (i.e. seasoned) cast iron. I have a halogen smooth top cooking surface which I generally love, however it's not compatible with traditional cast iron skillets. True cast iron has two important properties, it's non-stick and it's indestructible, this pan lacks both of those features. Instead of having a seasoned cast iron cooking surface it has a rough enamel coat which isn't any less sticky than stainless steel and it's much less durable. The coating is as delicate as teflon, the instructions say to use silicone instead of steel tools with it, and not to put the pan in a dishwasher. So far cleanup with a sponge and water has been fine, however I've been very careful not to burn anything onto the pan. We all know that burning something is inevitable, with stainless steel and true cast iron you can use steel wool to clean up the worst mess, I wouldn't dare try that with this pan. I've also found that heat distribution isn't quite as even as it is with good stainless (i.e the sandwich bottom type).
As far as I can tell nobody makes a proper smooth-top compatible cast iron pan, i.e. a flat enameled bottom and a seasoned cast iron interior. I don't know why this is so hard, but if someone were to sell a pan like that I'd buy it in a second.

Cuisinart GR-3 Griddler Jr 3-in-1 Nonstick Countertop Grill
According to an article titled "Grill Power" in the February, 2006 issue of Prevention Magazine, Steven Raichlen, host of Barbecue University on PBS, says, "The lower the wattage [of indoor electric grills], the less likely your meat will taste like it came from an outdoor barbecue. It'll taste like it was steamed, instead." The author of the article, Amanda Pressner, suggests choosing an indoor electric grill "at least 1000 to 1500 watts. Smaller appliances usually use around 750 watts; that won't get hot enough to really brown your food or apply grill marks."
So far I have cooked chicken, salmon, lean ground beef burgers, petite sirloin steaks, vegetables, panini, chicken quesadillas, beef quesadillas, plain old grilled cheese sandwiches, and Oscar Mayer Turkey Smoked Sausage on my Griddler Jr. Boneless chicken breasts come out juicy really juicy with serious grill marks and tasting great. Panini wow; comes out great. Quesadillas come out great, with grill marks, and they go straight to the table nice and hot.
Before learning about the importance of wattage, my main reason for wanting to upgrade from the Hamilton Beach to the Cuisinart Griddler Jr. was because the Griddler Jr. has removable grills to facilitate easy cleaning. But the Griddler Jr. has so much more going for it... With it's stainless finish (all of the exterior but the handle and base are stainless steel), it's a handsome kitchen appliance. If your kitchen has room for it, you'll want to leave it out where it can be seen. It's "floating lid" allows you to get a thick piece of poultry or meat inside it or a thick sandwich or panini, and the top and bottom grills will make even contact with whatever is being cooked. And although this is the "Jr." sized model, it is a good size. The surfaces of the grills measure (by my own measurements) 7 1/8 X 11 1/8. The entire unit, when you include the handle, etc., fits in a footprint that is approximately 13 X 12.
The Griddler Jr. has a red "on" light to the left of the heat control knob, and a green light to the right that comes on when the grills have reached the setting you've turned the knob to. At the highest setting, the grills get very hot. I find that I can cook a panini so that it is hot on the outside with melted cheese and warm to hot insides in about 6 minutes after the green light comes on, with the dial set to the medium temperature setting. Cooking a boneless chicken breast at that setting takes about 10-12 minutes (I use a fork-type battery operated thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken).
It is so easy to clean. When done cooking with it, turn the knob to the off position, unplug the unit, and leave it open to cool while you eat. After 30 minutes the unit is completely cool and the grills can be easily removed for washing, and if all you've cooked is panini and there's not a big mess on the grills, they can probably be wiped clean without removing them.
Before getting the Griddler Jr., I ordered a full size Griddler model GR-4 from Amazon's Warehouse Deals, where it was sold at a reduced price and listed as an open box unit. When I received it the handle was broken, and so I returned it. Getting to see it made me realize that it was larger than what I needed, and I didn't really need the two-sided grills that the GR-4 comes with. I mention this because it is obvious that both the full size Griddler and the Griddler Jr. are manufactured up to the same high standards. The Griddler Jr. is just that, a junior or smaller and less functional version of its parent (less functional in that it doesn't have reversible grills), as opposed to a lower quality version. The same high quality is there.
I love it. I'm so glad I got it. I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone who is in the market for an indoor grill.
I'd been looking at panini grills for years, but had never found the perfect model. Many of the grills I looked at in stores seemed very cheap and poorly built. One clear exception was the Cuisinart grill, which was very well constructed, but it was very expensive and also very large. When I saw this new Cuisinart Junior, I decided to take the plunge. It has become the hit of our kitchen. Making fancy grilled sandwiches has become a highlight of our weekends. My teenage kids love the sandwiches off the grill, and they don't seem to notice that they're eating healthier than before. The quality of panini sandwiches off this little grill is far superior to the paninis we get at our local restaurants.
Here are the features that make this grill a winner for me:
The grill plates really are nonstick. I've never had to do more than wipe them clean, even when drippings seem to have burned on. The plates remove super easily, and also snap back in very easily.
The grill pre-heats very quickly. I turn it on before I start making the sandwich, and it's always hot enough by the time the sandwich is assembled.
The grill always creates the perfectly grilled panini. When I used to make grilled sandwiches in a frying pan, getting them perfectly grilled without burning was hit or miss. With this grill, I just set the dial a bit shy of medium and every sandwich comes out perfectly grilled.
The hinged lid let's us make fairly huge sandwiches (a few inches thick). This might not sound like a big deal, but it's key to having fun with the grill, since it let's you make creative sandwiches that you could never cook all the way through or flip in a frying pan.
The small size is perfect. It cooks one very large or two smaller panini, and it doesn't take up a ton of counter space. It's small enough that I can leave it out all the time, which makes it a lot more convenient to use.
One thing to be careful of:The lid does get hot. Make sure you only use the handle for opening and closing. I wouldn't let younger kids work the grill by themselves.
I have not tried cooking meat with the grill.We use it strictly as a panini grill.
I don't generally get excited about kitchen appliances, but this little grill is downright fun. Any gadget that can get my teenagers psyched about going to the grocery store to find wacky things they can turn into grilled sandwiches is a hit in my book.(BTW, our favorite sandwiches so far are: tomato and fresh mozzarela with basil pesto; chicken, apple, and raspberry with provolone; and pear with brie. My apologies if I'm not spelling some of these foods right.)
Great purchase. Getting used more heavily than our stove. I'm hooked.

The grill has a modern brushed stainless steel finish that will fit in well with any kitchen. It is compact, light in weight, but heats up quickly to the appropriate temperature. Veggies, fish, chicken and steak cook evenly and quickly. It toasts panini's well even with the thickest bread and a multitude of fillings. The plates snap out easily so you can pop them into your sink or dishwasher and the plasticcleaning tool is well designed to let you get into the grooves and remove any grease. The only draw back is if you are grilling a large steak some of the grease may miss the drip cup and dripdown the front of the unit, but I guess that's why sponges were invented. All in all a fine product that is useful in any kitchen.

The unit is small enough to fit almost anywhere.It cooks very well and sometimes too well if you have the heat on too high.I have used it to cook steaks, pork chops, hamburgers, bacon, sausages and grilled cheese sandwiches.And if you like hash browns but want to avoid immersing it in grease (bad for cholesterol!), get the shredded type and cook it in this unit.Works very well!If the bacon is too long, you may have to cut it in half (minor irritation) to fit but otherwise it does a great job.
The main problem as others have pointed out ... GREASE DRIPPINGS! ... Aaaargh!Those drip cups are next to useless!They could have at least done two things to make it better.Design the DRIP spouts (where the grease drips from)a bit longer with a better lip or design the drip cups higher so it fits perfectly under the drip spouts.
The reason they didn't is because the metal gets hot that the plastic will melt if it touches the plates. I know cause I toasted one of my plastic measuring cups.So, why not make the drip cups out of metal?
Other than that, the unit works very well!But cleaning the grease all over the counter and especially under the unit can be very aggravating if one has to do it after every use.#@$!%$#and more explatives!
Inspite of that I gave it four stars simply because it works well and best of all, it's easy to clean the removable plates!Wait till it's cool, run it through some hot water while brushing it lightly with a soft brush with some dish soap .. dry it and you're done!
Addendum: (12-22-2009)
In regards to the drip spouts, I think that had they made it another 1/4" longer and angled it down, it would help in avoiding the drippings from running underneath the spout and down against the unit.

Once I found the perfect recipe to make beautiful golden, light, high-rise pancakes, I knew I needed an electric griddle that would accommodate large 5"-6" pancakes. This Presto handles the golden part just fine, but it's not big enough to handle more than two IHOP-sized pancakes at a time. So I've opted to order a second one, which will add to my griddle real estate, and produce the golden tan pancakes that I've come to love. I like the presto because it maintains its temperature and the plate is heated uniformly with no hotspots. The non-stick surface allows me to use less butter. The Perfect Pancake
Important: Mix the batter as little as possible. Lumpy is good. Over mixing causes the moisture to combine with the gluten in the flour to form glue that prevents the gas (formed by the baking soda) from letting the pancakes rise as they cook. So stir as little as possible to just mix the ingredients.
1. Mix the following dry ingredients in a bowl:
2 ½ cups all purpose flour
¼ cup of granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2. In a different separate bowl, mix the following wet ingredients:
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups sour cream
2 large eggs scrambled
4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 tablespoons sweet cream butter, melted
3. Add the mixed dry ingredients to the bowl of wet ingredients. Stir until just blended, but still lumpy. (Do not over mix)
4. Preheat Presto griddle to 350-degrees.Pour batter by ¼ -cupfulls onto griddle.

I LOVE this griddle!The coating Paula Deen has put on her pans is wonderful!!!I switched from another brand name pots & pans to Paula Deen pots & pans because of the coating.You need very little oil/shortening when frying, which is a real plus!I highly recommend her pots & pans.In fact I showed them to my daughter and she tried them and switched to Paula Deen also!This griddle came with a set we purchased from a big box store. The griddle warped after about 6 months. The rest of the set is fine.
