IMUSA VICTORIA-85008 Cast Iron Tortilla Press Pre-Cured 8-Inch, Black

IMUSA VICTORIA-85008 Cast Iron Tortilla Press Pre-Cured 8-Inch, BlackI started making my own corn tortillas, and at first used a glass pie pan (put dough inbetween two pieces of zip lock plastic, and then squash with the pie plate.)I would have to press hard, and rotate the round pie dish to get the dough to squish out to the right size/thickness.It worked well, but I was afraid I would break the glass dish and cut myself I had to use so much pressure.It was sort of a rocking swirling motion to get it to press out right.It worked, but I had to lean on the plate too much.I had used a skillet bottom, but you couldn't see how big/thin the tortilla was, so if you don't buy this, try a pyrex pie pan on two plastic sheets of ziplock material.

My husband purchased this press for me, and it is so easy to use.I use two pieces of ziplock plastic, cut to fit the press, and my flour (Masa Harina) has a recipe on the back for 4, 8 and 12 torillas.These make balls about the size of a ping pong ball or golf ball.They squeeze out perfectly every time, and I use no pressure at all.

I have read that there are two types of presses: cast iron and aluminum.The aluminum is lighter, but requires more force.The cast iron is heavy, and comes with a "shiny paint job" that comes off with time, according to internet reveiws, but my dough does not touch the press with the plastic sheets, so this is simply cosmetic in my opinion.I did notice some grease on it, but I assumed it was to keep the product from rusting, being that it is iron....you put oil on your cast iron pans for this purpose.It was minimal oil.

To protect my granite counters, I put felt stick-on feet onto the bottom since it is heavy and iron.May not be needed, but it makes me feel better.I could not be more impressed with it, and I can whip out fresh tortillas in about 2 minutes.I had at first told my husband not to get me one, I'd continue with the pie plate, but now I am thrilled to have it.It is effortless.I hate to see that some people had theirs break, or not make thin tortillas, but I imagine it is just a problem with their particular unit.If my tortillas were any thinner, you couldn't get them off of the plastic sheet.If they were thicker, they wouldn't be "right."Hope that makes sense!I like the press, and hope that it lasts.I received it in November, and have used it almost daily, and it is now in January...I haven't seen any issues with the product in that amount of time.

6 MONTH UPDATE

Product is still working great after 6 months.I am going to try wax paper as was suggested by a fellow Amazon shopper, in lieu of the zip lock.I have slowed down making tortillas, so it is not getting "as much use" as it was, but this is merely for waist-line purposes!I'd make them all day, everyday if I could, without getting as big as an ox.It has held up well, and makes excellent tortillas with ease.

This is an excellent tortilla press.We just recieved one and yes, it is a bit greasy out of the box, but this is not a hinderance. It made very flat, thin, and (most importantly) consistently good tortillas.

In order to avoid contact with the grease (which there from the manufacturing process to prevent the cast iron from rusting not necessarily a bad thing), we took a 1 gallon Ziploc bag (food grade plastic) and cut it at the seams to create two pieces of plastic.We then trimmed the plastic sheets to be slightly larger than the press.This works wonderfully, we only need to peel the pressed tortilla from the plastic sheet and lay it in to the griddle.

We would recommend this press to anyone interested in making their own tortillas, sopes, or other dishes requiring use of a press.

The one I received had little grease on it, not that it would have bothered me much anyway.

It also presses the tortillas paper thin.In fact, I had to be careful not to get them too thin at first.

Recommend lining each side with plastic when pressing. Then transfer pressed tortilla to a piece of wax paper then onto the grill.That's just the easiest way we found to tranfer them.

Served warm with some queso fresca yum!

this product is great, i was reading all the reviews before purchasing and wondered about some reviews, because YES it comes with instructions,they are ON THE BOX , yes there is no extra paper, but why , the instruction is on the box in english and spanish! It recommends also to put a plastic bag/ paper between the press, so the dough will not stick. People who don't read the instructions will have a problem working with the tortilla maker. To get the tortilla off the plastic, you first lift it from one side off, put the plastic back on and flip it over , now you take the plasic of this side off, keep it off, turn it over and take the other already loosened up plastic off, now you can bake it in the pan. This whole procedure is important, so you don't ripp the tortilla since it is thin! frying no oil and about 50 sconds each side, heat up the pan first before you start, it frys better. if you take a piece of dough the size of a golf ball or little smaller, you get about a 5-6 inc tortilla, put the ball a little off centerlike somebody else already recommended more toward the back and the tortilla comes out more evenyou may have to try out a bit remember just when you started playing with play dough? trying out different things?:)One thing is trueit is time consuming,but to do it together as a family is the most fun! My whole family loves it! Hope this review is helpful!

My wife and I are very impressed with this tortilla press.My wife initially got a plastic press from a local store, and it was horrible.It wouldn't flatten out the tortillas at all because it would bend under pressure.

Then we tried the 6.5 inch aluminum press that is also sold here on amazon.It was much better than the plastic one, but we were still disappointed at the size of the tortillas.

This lead us to the 8 inch cast iron press.It's true that it's a little greasy out of the box, but after a quick washing with soap and water, it is good to go.After putting plastic wrap on both pressing surfaces we gave it a try.It presses our tortilla dough as thin as we want it, even too thin if we decide to push it that hard.The size of the tortillas is much better as well.I would recommend this press to anyone that is looking for a quality tortilla press.

Lodge Logic 3-Quart Covered Chicken Fryer

Lodge Logic L8CF3 Covered Chicken Fryer, Black, 3-QuartI own three pieces of cast iron cookware, and this item is one of them... and among my favorite cooking implements, period.For dishes requiring steady, even heat and for cooks who require durable cookware with easy clean-up, cast iron CANNOT be beat!

This fryer is going to last forever.Its care is easy: I scrub it with hot water only, and dry it with an old rag and apply a thin layer of vegetable oil while the iron is still hot... a year and a half later, it's still rust-free and delivering the reliable service I have come to expect and admire.No scratches interfere with its performance, as is the case with my allegedly-long-lasting Wearever nonstick cookware set (what a waste of money THAT was!). In fact, in this particular chicken fryer, I've produced everything from french fries to spaghetti sauce to eggs and bacon to french toast!It's a dependable griddle, skillet, grill, and pot, and it goes right from the stovetop and into the oven for maximum versatility.

The best thing about the chicken fryer is its somewhat smaller circumference than the skillet or the Dutch oven.It takes up a bit less stovetop space and provides greater depth, making it ideal for small batches of soups, stews, or deep-fried goodies.

I am an avid home-chef, and I can say without exception that my cast-iron cookware is the best kitchen investment I've ever made.

I bought this one because I was looking for something to fry various things in without the pot warping (as stainless steel pots do). Since I got this pot, I have been using it to cook all sorts of dishes--soup, stew, reheating rice etc. It's big enough to hold enough fried rice, for example, for 4, and I can pop theentire pot, lid and all, into the oven to keep warm. But it's not so big as to be too heavy to handle.

The best part about this pot is how nicely the lid fits. I was surprised how tight the lid seals the pot. The steam starts to escape only when the liquid in the pot is boiling really hard. The interior of the lid is unusual looking. It is not flat nor smooth. It has a dozen small protruding tips shaped like candy cones. When steam condenses on the inside of the lid, the resulting liquid falls along those tips back into the pot, instead of dripping off the edge of the lid. Ingeneous, I thought.

I find this a very versatile and useful pot. Extremely well made--almost polished for a cast iron pot. It comes seasoned.

Well, no complaints exactly -it's what I ordered and wanted -but be aware of the exact dimensions of the pan. Though measured across the top the diameter of the pan is accurately 10 1/4 in., the sides slope in making the cooking surface a measly 8 in. -kinda small of you're thinking of frying in larger batches.

I was also hoping to double this deep fryer as a frying pan (I saw the higher sides as a bonus, lessening grease splatter), but again the small 8 in. cooking surface limits what I can make ie. too small for bacon. Apparently, Lodge makes a larger fryer -a 5qt 12" sucker -that might be a better choice for a family, but alas, not available (currently) on Amazon.

Otherwise, a great pan, substantial and well made. The lid is a great bonus to have.

I flat out love this fryer.I purchased it to replace one of those fancy electric deep fryers. By doing so, I've saved counter space, because this fryer sits on your stove and can be stored permanently on the back of your stove full of grease with the cover on it. It will heat grease fast, and because its cast iron there is an exceptional taste difference in everything you fry. Also, you can use it as a regular pot. If you are assembling just the basics or a dream kitchen, a cast iron Skillet, Grill, and Fryer are a must have. There is no replacement item, or substitute for certain things you cook.

I bought this inexpensive pot along with a piece of calphalon.I must say, I like the cast iron better!What a great pot, the size is perfect for those quick prepackaged items us working moms make like rice-a-roni, hamburger helper and scalloped potatoes.Yes its heavy, but it's easy to clean and I just leave it sitting my stove.It takes a little to get used to the proper cooking temperatures, so be careful.Also, I would advise getting the tiny handle cover, because the handle does get very hot.I make my daughter home-made chicken tenders at least once a week, and they came out the best ever using this pot.Prior to this I had been using calphalon and it doesn't make the chicken near as crisp and perfect.Love it!

Circulon Contempo Hard Anodized Nonstick 12-Inch Stir Fry Pan

Circulon Contempo Hard Anodized Nonstick 12-Inch Stir Fry PanI ordered this wok/pan to replace a similar size pan that literally fell apart ofter 25 years of every day use. This pan will last longer I am sure. I have two other Circulon pans I love so I felt secure in ordering this. I was not disappointed. This pan is much sturdier. On my old pan the handle attachment broke. This attachment is solid, so that won't happen. You can't see it in the pic, but there is a strong loop for hanging concealed in the end of the handle. Like all Circulon pans it cooks great and the non stick is part of the pan and will not wear out, scratch of flake off. I particularly like Circulon because they are sooo easy to clean. There is nothing to polish and the outside is the same color as the inside, so nothing to discolor like my old pan which looked pretty when new but was a mess when I threw it out.

So why only 4 stars? I really would have liked a helper handle. My old pan had that. Perhaps they felt as it was only 12 inches it didn't need one, but even though it is well balanced, I do more than stirfry in it. I make lots of stews and sauces and when full it can be heavy. I also wish they offered a lid; even as an additional purchase. Still, it is one terrific all purpose pan.

I am NOT a cook, OK? However, I recently started stirfrying chicken tenders with onions and peppers as a way to healthier eating. The non-stick pan I was using was a little worse for wear so I decided to look into purchasing a wok.

After looking at quite a few online, I chose the Circulon 12-in pan. It turned out to be an excellent choice. It is the perfect size for a family of 3-4. I had narrowed the choices down to this one and a cast iron pan that was highly recommended. I chose the Circulon because of the weight difference. This pan is lightweight, but of good quality and it cooks and cleans beautifully.

I use it almost everyday and highly recommend it.

5 stars means something must be pretty darn special, and this circulon 12 inch stir fry pan qualifies as just that, special. Start with the heavy construction, great shape, high sides to keep food from spilling out, a comfortable soft grip handle, and a hidden ring that you can hang your pan.

I've had and used mine for almost a year. I do not put any non stick in the dishwasher, no matter what it says. I use nylon, silicon, or wooden utensils to extend the life cycle of any non stick pan. Put a little care into this pan and it will reward you. After 10 months my pan still looks new, still completely covered with the non stick, and that is with at least 3 or 4 uses a week.

The non stick really works. I stir fry all the time and when I add oil it's for flavor, when I don't add oil I still have lovely non sticking vegetables, egg, and rice. The pan heats evenly, even on my electric oven. The flatish bottom fits on the burner without tilting and the high sides ensure that I'm not tossing food overboard when I get enthusiastic and channel my inner Guy Fieri and start shaking my pan all over the place.

For the longest time I went the cheap route, buying non stick pans at big box stores and complaining because they were cheap, well yes, they were. When I finally broke down and got a decent pan the difference in quality was amazing. I have huge woks for when I stir fry for the entire family, but for one or two people this pan is my go to, whether I'm simply sauteing eggplant and tomatoes with garlic, leftover rice and egg and bits and Pcs of leftover meals to make a stir fry lunch for one, or anything else I want to make in this pan. there isn't a lid but I just use one of those all size fits all if I need to briefly steam or cover.

I thought the circles in the pan might make it hard to clean or something, but it doesn't interfere with the cooking or cleaning at all. A great pan I highly recommend. I'm saving my pennies to buy more Circulon, although to be honest, for the quality and performance in this pan the price is very fair.

i just got this for christmas.i have other circulon skillets and the hi-low texture is the best, nothing ever sticks.have had the other skillets since last spring and no scratches at all and my son is a skillet destroyer but not these, he will have a hard time scraping these pans to destruction.they wash up very easy and i wish i had discovered circulon about 20 years ago if not longer....it would have saved me a lot of money replacing pans.like i said, i got some of these last spring and i have never had a skillet last this long without getting scratches and having to replace it.my pans just don't last long but i expect these could last for years.

this stir fry pan is really big and heavy but not as heavy as the cast iron ones that are toooo heavy.i like the fact they are oven safe and i just can't say enough good about circulon.

This is a very lasting piece of kitchenware.

Since I bought 2 in 1994, I have used them regularly for sauteeing, for omelettes,

frittatas, Chinese stir-fry and other dishes.

These are about as durable as non-stick pans get, IMO.

I even learned to "flip" omelettes, daringly high in the air in these pans.

For the above uses, I highly recommend them.

My husband received a Visa gift card for Christmas last year and decided to splurge on cookware.Otherwise, we might never have known how wonderful "real" cookware could be!

The set we bought consisted of a 10" skillet along with an omelet pan.Because we simmer many of our dishes, we added a large skillet complete with a glass lid.Not only are these lids substantial and high quality, they are glass so we can watch our food as it cooks without having to remove the lid and lose the heat.

Of course the saucepans with lids are amazing....So nice to have pans WITH LIDS!Stock pot and lid cooks chicken and dumplings like a dream.

Do know that Calphalon cookware comes in a variety of qualities and prices.Williams-Sonoma is a good place to compare these products.Once I felt of each line, I understood the difference.Nice thing is, regardless of the price, they all have a really high quality finish that you will be proud to own!

MY FAVORITE PROS:

These skillets go from stovetop to oven when you need to finish a dish off in the oven.

The insides, as long as you don't use metal utensils, last for years.

It is also great to be able to add pieces as you can afford them.No one will be the wiser.

CONS:

The handles are a bit heavy so the skillets (not the pans) sometimes tilt when they are empty.

Overall, these are attractive, high quality cookware pieces that are well worth the money.In addition, many times there are promotional pieces that run about $30 / skillet so you can try before you buy an entire set.

Thunder Group 7 Inch Aluminum Nonstick Fry PanThe cooking portion of the pan is fine, but the handle is not. It is uninsulated, and cannot be touched with a bare hand. Electric Skillet - Chefman Family Sized 12 inch Electric Skillet (RJ05)

Electric Skillet - Chefman Family Sized 12 inch Electric SkilletSimple assembly out of the box. Heats evenly. Warms up quickly. The skillet is thick-walled and holds heat well. It is very heavy-duty and appears as though it will last a long time. Easy to see cooking progress through the glass top. Also, it's great to have it in black considering how difficult it is to keep an electric skillet looking great long term. The 25 year old skillet I retired for this one looked scary. I've been shopping for a larger, well constructed skillet for a while but thought they were all quite pricey. (I know, if I only buy one every 25 years I shouldn't be so cheap.) Anyway, this one sale-priced at Amazon was a better price than I was able to find at any of the national chain stores on sale. I have tried many electric skillets and this one is the best so far.....it's extra deep and the glass top really makes it easy to see what your cooking

I love this skillet! I really can't say it enough. I am in college, and living in a kind of crappy house that came with a crappy stove. This skillet is great for everyday use for me. I use it to make grilled cheese, fry eggs, stirfry...pretty much anything! You just plug it into an outlet, and turn it to the desired heat, or just put it on "keep warm" if you want to keep like toast warm or something. It takes literally a minute to get to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

I definitely recommend this skillet. It is easy, quick, and great for one or two people! I have had it for over a year, use it every day, and so far no problems.

There are more expensive options on Amazon but for the 29.99 I paid its definitly doing the job well. I wouldn't spend anymore unless you are looking for something to use on a commercial basis.

This product disappointed out of the box. Thin walled. Not heavy duty at all.Non-stick coating was unrefined as at top edges of the pan it looked like overspray.Put the lid on and it did not fit evenly in any orientation.Then I noticed the legs did not sit evenly on the countertop.Packed it up and sent it back.Not happy.Cannot recommend.

p.s. the warming mechanism on the bottom of the pan says "do not submerse in water", which means you cannot put this unit in the sink to clean it.Not a good design at all.

All-Clad Copper Core 12-Inch Chef's Pan

All-Clad Copper Core 12-Inch Chef's PanWhen I started law school, I moved into a studio apartment with only microwave pots to cook in.After a year, I decided that some better form of food was necessary.I first got an All-Clad 1-quart saucier, and then I got this amazing pot/pan.I need nothing else.It warms quickly and evenly and cleans beautifully.At first I choked over the price but I bit the bullet and got it.The cost is, granted, about the same that one can pay and get a whole set, but I've had those inferior sets before.They've gotten thrown out in a year or two because they're worth exactly what I paid for them.Should I ever actually need another pot, I won't look at anything but All-Clad cop-r core.

This pan is of top quality. Heating is rather even due to its special constraction. The 12 inch size is perfect for preparing meal for 1-4 persons. The handle will never be hot however the handle of lid could be hot if cook long.

CON: When stirring fry eggs or meat, this pan is really sticky. I changed from high heat to medium heat and added more vegetable oil and these won't help that much.

I bought this pan five months ago and have not regretted it. It was the first piece of All Clad Copper Core that I purchased and I have purchased five more pans since! First of all, the pan looks beautiful and you can put it in the dishwasher. I clean it with powdered Bar Keepers Friend (sells for $2 in Publix) and then put it in the dishwasher. My dishwasher has a sanitize cycle, so I prefer to put as many things in it as possible that do not require hand washing.

I have cooked a variety of things in this pan: Fried items, sautéed items, marinara sauce, stews, soups, etc. Basically, it is a great multi-purpose pan and unusual. You will never find this style of pan in a set that you would buy. I am not into Asian food, but obviously if you like that, this pan would be perfect for stir frying. It holds quite a bit of food and the loop makes it easy to move from the stove to other areas of the kitchen if you need to. The lid is high doomed so moisture will stay in as well. I really do not think you can go wrong with this pan. I own the 10 inch fry pan, but find it's not necessary to purchase the 12 inch since I have the Chef's Pan.

I recently received this pan as a gift and, though I have not used it much yet, I think it is necessary to mention that the Amazon product description is wrong--this pan is not a wok, or "wok-like" in anything more than a superficial sense (it has rounded sides). It is much shallower than a standard wok, and has a much larger flat portion on the bottom than a standard flat-bottom wok (it is more like a deep skillet with a lid than it is wok-like). Yes, one could stir-fry in it, but that means little (one could try to stir-fry in a skillet or sauce pan also).

Stir-frying will certainly be easier and better in an actual wok that is deeper and more rounded; I have one made by Calphalon and it is great. As far as this chef's pan goes, I plan to use it primarily for fricassees and braises.

Want All-Clad Copper Core 12-Inch Chef's Pan Discount?

Also known as a Sauteuse Evasee, this type of chef's pan is probably the most versatile piece of cookware one can buy. It can boil, steam, stir fry, deep fry, braise, blanch, slow cook, pan fry, blacken, saute, and perform pretty much any other task required of cookware. In my opinion, there is no better pan for making large amounts of roux based sauces, it effectively functions as an extra wide 4qt saucier. Using a whisk couldn't be any easier, there are no hard to reach areas whatsoever.

All Clad's version of this pan is particularly convenient because it can be placed in the dishwasher. Not everyone has the time to hand wash their pans, especially if you cook on weekdays.

Please do not buy this pan thinking it will replace a traditional Chinese carbon steel or cast iron wok. The heat distribution is much too high to achieve the high temperatures around the edges that are required to produce "wok hay", that great smoky, umami-packed wok signature flavor. For everything, and I mean everything else in the kitchen however, it is great!

Farberware Restaurant Pro Aluminum Nonstick 8-Inch Commercial Skillet

Farberware Restaurant Pro Aluminum Nonstick 8-Inch Commercial SkilletThis is "the best" non-stick pan EVER!!! It really does not stick. On all "non-stick" I do use some kind of spray as most pans for me still are hard to clean despite using non-stick AND a spray...not this one! You don't need much and your eggs will thank you!

Now I've used the so-called "high end" stuff. I even own expensive pans. But none can even begin to compare to this one. I recently gave away my Calap... one because the non-stick was the worst surface ever!!! There is almost a "grip" to the surface. It is rougher than this Farberware one. This one is very smooth. It even out performs other Farberware pans! If I were you, I'd buy this one in every size you think you could use. They are getting harder and harder to find!

I would suggest a few things to keep the nice non-stick thing going well:

1. HAND WASH only!! use a washcloth... really that is all you will need. (um, yeah soap too but that should go w/o saying) Don't put it in the dishwasher... even when stuff states "dishwasher safe" there is something about the chemicals that turns the good cookware into dollar store garbage in a matter of just a couple of cycles...sometimes just one!

2. To keep the back nice and shiny, I do use the steel wool pads... but ONLY for the silver/aluminum part. Don't let it touch the non-stick part.

(this pan hangs on my pan wall, so I like to keep all my pans nice and shiny)

3. Use cooking spray or a very small amout of oil/butter/etc. I know. I know. It's "non-stick". Right. I've seen the infomercials on non-stick. They all work the first few times and then all of a sudden they stop. I use very very little on this pan...Really I do. But I believe it has made it last that much longer.

3. When you are done cooking, DON'T put the very hot pan right in water. I set mine on a burner that was not used and I let it cool. There is something about warping and putting hot pans in water... wives tale? I'm not testing the waters. :) If you used your spray/oil/etc, it really will clean for you. You can, however, take a spatula/scraper (plastic/slicone) and clear out the debris first. It really does clean nicely!

This has become a hard to find item. I am so happy with this pan that I am going to purchase extras to store for my kids use some day.

Works great; I mostly only use it for eggs (prefer stainless coated aluminum for everything else), and it's vastly better than the cheap nonstick skillet I had before, easy to make great omelettes.

This skillet is fantastic. It is very well balanced and the bottom sits flat against the burner, thereby providing uniform heating.Scrambled eggs, pancakes, french toast.....all cook great in this pan.No sticking and very easy clean-up.Highly recommended.Now I plan to order the next larger size too.

This is "the best" non-stick pan EVER!!!It really does not stick. On all "non-stick" I do use some kind of spray as most pans for me still are hard to clean despite using non-stick AND a spray...not this one!You don't need much and your eggs will thank you!

Now I've used the so-called "high end" stuff.I even own expensive pans.But none can even begin to compare to this one.I recently gave away my Calap... one because the non-stick was the worst surface ever!!!There is almost a "grip" to the surface.It is rougher than this Farberware one.This one is very smooth.It even out performs other Farberware pans!If I were you, I'd buy this one in every size you think you could use.They are getting harder and harder to find!

I would suggest a few things to keep the nice non-stick thing going well:

1. HAND WASH only!! use a washcloth... really that is all you will need. (um, yeah soap too but that should go w/o saying)Don't put it in the dishwasher... even when stuff states "dishwasher safe" there is something about the chemicals that turns the good cookware into dollar store garbage in a matter of just a couple of cycles...sometimes just one!

2. To keep the back nice and shiny, I do use the steel wool pads... but ONLY for the silver/aluminum part.Don't let it touch the non-stick part.

(this pan hangs on my pan wall, so I like to keep all my pans nice and shiny)

Paula Deen 5 Quart Cast Iron Covered Oval Casserole

Paula Deen 5 Quart Cast Iron Covered Oval CasseroleI am a recent convert to cast iron cookware.I thought the stuff my mother used was old fassioned.Boy, was I wrong!!!Cast iron is great!Even heat distribution, non-stick (follow the instructions), and it doesn't slide around on the burner because it is heavy.I had to learn a bit about curing and cleaning but now that I have it down this is better than any stainless steel or non-stick cookware.WARNING the handles get hot, the lids get hot and don't drop it on your toes.You will notice on the high end cookware that they always advertise how thick the pot bottoms are or how the multiple layers of metal distribute heat evenly well cast iron does this naturally.Great pot CAST IRON RULES (don't wait 50 years to find out)

This Paula Deen cast iron (dutch oven) is the best I have ever used.What makes this pot unique is the shape.For me, I can handle the weight of the iron pot in this shape with my hands much easier than with a large round pot when handwashing and drying.Also this size fits in the oven better, not taking up all the room where I can add another small baking dish and cook more than one item together.The style of this pot is so attractive, I leave it on the top of the stove while not in use.You can do everything all in this pot; brown, saute and bake for one receipe such as beef stew, roast beef, roast pork or lamb and of course chicken.This pot is so attractive, I even take it to the dinning table and serve right out of it.Paula Deen also makes this pot covered in a enamel coating in lots of beautiful colors.I like the natural look of the iron.Great pot for the money.

I've used this pot several times now for searing meat, braising, and making stews.It's so sturdy and I love the way it looks.I enjoy having pretty things to cook my food in, but they must also get the job done and be easy to clean. This one fits the bill in all these areas.I'm very happy with my purchase.After making my beef stew tonight, it looked like I had a "baked-on, caked-on mess".But after letting the pot and lid soak for literally a couple of minutes, the food came right off.Now that's my kind of cleaning.

The pot is very heavy, but all cast iron is heavy.We can all use the extra exercise!!

I really like the way things turn out when I cook them in this. I have made lambshanks, beef roasts, and cooked a whole chicken in it. I like that I can braise the meat in it, add other things, and put it in the oven so it is just cooking with one pot.

Food did taste a little odd the first couple of times I used it but that went away by the third or fourth use.

It will want to develop rust so I have found I need to season it after every couple of uses. I wipe crisco shortening over the entire inside of the lid and the inside of the pot. Then I put the lid on and put it in the oven at about 200 degrees for half an hour or so. After I use it, I wash it out and dry it thoroughly immediately. This is not something I would leave dirty for more than a few hours because it is iron and I think you would be asking for rust to develop. I don't think I would even leave it soaking for any amount of time. After we eat, I wash it and dry it right away. I have found that I need to cure it again after every two or three uses to stop rust from developing.

It is really heavy for me to lift when food is in it.

Food tends not to burn onto this pot when cooking so it is easy to cook with and easy to clean. I left the roasts in the oven for about 4 hours to get them really tender with some liquid and no spots burned on the food anywhere. I have never had food burn to the bottom. You can't get that with a pan made of anything else.

I definitely would recommend this for anyone who want a nice fryer in the kitchen. I make fries with it and use 1/3 of the oil as opposed to deep fryer.

Recently purchased this product from Amazon.I was influenced by the good reviews.It does make nice, fluffy omelets, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't cook themproperly.I followed the instructions to a "T" but the omelets still looked more like quiche.I carefully cut down the cooking times to the point where the eggs were too undercooked and splattered when I flipped the pan.It seems that for this particular unit, the thermostatmight have been set too high at the factory and therefore the eggs get very '"browned" and it was frustrating to have little control over it.It's also quite possible that the thermostat is just defective. Nevertheless, I sent the Selective Brands Over Easy Omelet Express back to Amazon.Unless I'm notified by the manufacturer that this particular omelet maker was defective, I've decided to not re-order this product.

Chef's Secret 22-Piece Element Super Set

Chef's Secret 22-Piece Element Super SetHi y'all,

If you've read any of my other reviews, you know I try to tell you what I think about the item, rather than gush or slam emotionally.

I got on the waterless cookware research kick after attending a Saladmaster party. I loved the idea of waterless for the health benefits and flavor of the food, as well as the quality of construction of the surgical steel pieces. My husband is a full time seminary student, and I homeschool our children. There is no way we will ever be in a position where $2000-5000 for a set of cookware will be a good buy in our opinions. I am not impugning Saladmaster, at all. I'm saying we can't afford it, and even if we could, I don't have it in me to shell out that much money for pans.

What anyone considering this cookware needs to consider is that waterless is a distinctive, and probably a new way of cooking. It requires adjustment in practice and thinking unless you already cook waterless. The idea is to cook the foods at a low enough temperature (212 degrees F or less) and with as little liquid as possible so that the majority of the nutrients are not cooked out and additional calories from fats/oils/grease are not cooked in. The natural flavors of the food really do come out when cooking waterless. It is a technique that requires a little patience and maybe some practice if you are in the habit of bringing something to a boil and cooking it until it is done. Waterless cookware does not mean you won't burn dinner if you are not paying attention. That is not to say you can't use these pans exactly the way you use other cookware--with water. If you want to cook waterless, you have to be in the kitchen until the steam valve whistles so you can turn the heat down to low or off. The food continues to cook from the steam and it's own liquid. The instruction manual that comes with the cookware has recommended cooking times for vegetables, and those should be followed because when all the liquid evaporates, the food will burn. If you're leaving the burner on, and you're leaving the kitchen, set a timer to come back and turn the burner off. Also, you have to use the right size pan for the amount of food you're preparing. The bottom of the pan needs to be covered with food, or the natural moisture in the food and the little water that clings to rinsed off vegetables cooks out too fast, and the food will burn. Other waterless cookbooks are avaliable, and I recommend getting one so that you can learn how to adjust your favorite recipes to the waterless cooking method.

I found other sets on-line, and the affordable ones are made by Maxam--if you have Maxam, World's Finest, Chef's Secret or Steam Control, Maxam made it. The expensive ones are made by Regal--Saladmaster, West Bend, etc. Regal sets are made of T317 (grade)surgical steel, and there is little difference in quality between the T317 and T304. Maxam offers T304 surgical stainless steel in 5, 7, and 9 ply (layer) construction, though I've been told the nomenclature has changed slightly so that the layers are more easily understood. Mom gave me a set of the 9 ply, and it is fabulous.

The quality is outstanding. The company has been in business since the 1950s, and when you look at and use the pans you can see why. They have a mirror finish and are very heavy, especially compared to standard metal cookware--even stainless steel. The multi-layer construction is incomparable to the standard 18/10 stainless I'm replacing, and I was using one of the nicer sets. The handles are sturdy and stay cool when cooking. The set is completely self-stacking, which is significant. Other cookware can be stacked, but the lids slide around, and the cookware slips off if it isn't balanced just right. These lids lie flat under the rim of the pan, which makes a flat surface for the next pan to set on. Nothing slides around or crashes the second you close the cabinet. The set comes with a lifetime warranty, excluding handles. I don't expect the handles to wear out in the next several years because they look sturdy, but if they do need to be replaced, they can be easily replaced with a screwdriver (as opposed to having to replace the whole pan when the handle comes off) and they are inexpensive to purchase from the company.

The price is excellent. You can't walk in Linens & Things or Dillard's/Foley's/Macy's and get a full set of cookware of this quality for the price. You probably can't even get a bigger set. Most of these waterless sets run between $200-300, depending on which ply you choose. Some websites charge more than $300, but do not pay it. There are too many out there that sell for $300 or less. Even if the handles break, or you drop one and break your foot, you can buy 10 sets of this waterless and still come out cheaper than the any of the Regal lines.

Clean up could not be easier. The pans are all dishwasher safe, and everything comes off by hand very easily. I scorched butter beans last week. I was not sure how much water was needed to cook dried beans, nor how long to cook them, and I burned the bottom layer badly. Butter beans(large lima)are very starchy, and nothing is more difficult to scrape off of a pan besides blackened, carmelized, starch. I followed the directions in the manual by scraping out that which could be salvaged, adding water to the pan, returning it to the stove, and bringing the water to a boil. When it was boiling, I scraped the scorched food off with a wooden spatula. I have have not had burned food come off teflon that easily. My standard stainless was a real pain to clean up when things burned--I've had to do the dryer sheet trick, and not had alot of luck with that. I don't generally burn dinner, but we've all done it occasionally. I was actually worried about having to clean this one up because the pans were brand new, and I didn't want to scratch them to get the black off. I need not have worried.

I really like this set, and I won't buy any other kind of cookware. This set passed the Saladmaster baking soda test, and the fresh/frozen vegetables I have cooked in it taste better than they do when cooked in standard cookware. The meats have been more flavorful, juicier, more tender, and absorbed the seasonings better. It takes less time to cook dinner, and l don't have to worry about a pot boiling over. I am glad that more of the nutrients are staying in the food I cook, and the price is unbeatable. I don't know whether or not you can boil an egg with a wet paper towel in these or not (because I haven't tried it yet), but for less than $300 and better quality than the mall, I don't care.

If you want to know exactly what you are going to get, read on for an intricately detailed description with references to the product pictures that I uploaded...

This set is not what I expected. I thought that this was a name brand, but there are no markings anywhere that say "Chef's Secret" and all pieces are made in China.

The bottom of the pieces are stamped "Multi Ply 12-Element; Surgical Stainless; Waterless Greaseless" (see pic). The inside of each handle is stamped "Mfg. in China, Nat'l Headquarters USA" but is too light and small to take a picture. The Limited Lifetime Warranty is backed by "CSC," which has a P.O. Box address in Dallas, Texas. I am assuming this is the US Headquarters.

Brand name and country of origin aside, these pieces are very solid/durable, look beautiful, and are a pleasure to cook with. In my opinion, they are well worth the "discount" price that Amazon and other retailers are selling them for, but I would not buy them at the "list" price.

The KTSS22 set includes the following 22 pieces:

(1) *1.5 qt Saucepan with long handle;

(2) Thermo Control Lid for 1.5 qt Saucepan;

(3) *2.0 qt Saucepan;

(*) These are the top volume measurements on the inside of these pieces, but they will actually hold more if you fill above this level.

Each piece has a mirrored finish on the outside and a satin finish on the inside cooking surface and bottom encapsulated heating surface (see cleaning note at end). There are several pieces that fit snugly into each other for various combinations of stack cooking. The plastic lids fit into, not onto, the mixing bowls (see pic) and form a tight seal.

The insides of the Saucepans and Roaster are marked with volume measurements in quarts (see pic). Each handle is attached with two rivets (see pic) and has a black plastic insert that insulates the handle and gives the pieces a finished look.

The Thermo Control knobs (see pic) are, in my opinion, more novel than practical. They make the pieces look interesting, but I have not found them to be very useful for the type of cooking that I do regularly.

One reviewer commented that the lids rest in the handles; however, the 2.0 qt Saucepan is the only piece in my set that does this (see pic). The rest look like they might fit if the plastic handle inserts were removed, but I am not certain.

With regards to the review about the metal melting, the instructions warn that the pieces might melt if left dry over a lit gas burner or hot electric element for prolonged periods. They also advise "NEVER PLACE COOKWEAR UNDER A BROILER" (the only instruction in all CAPS). Unfortunately, there is no mention of use in a conventional oven or maximum safe usage temperature.

According to several other online retailers' websites (via web search), each of these pieces is made of "XL304A" "Surgical Stainless Steel," which is a carbon-free, nickel-free, alloy of the following elements:

(1) Chromium: gives metal its corrosion resistance;

(2) Silicon: an excellent heat conductor;

(3) Manganese: prevents rust and corrosion;

(4) Copper: an immaculate heat conductor;

(5) Molybdenum: used for hardness & strength;

(6) Columbium: used for its corrosion resistance;

(7) Titanium : corrosion resistance & strength-to-strength ratio;

(8) Vanadium: stabilizes against oxidation;

(9) Cobalt: for wear-resistant;

(10) Iron: for weight and strength;

(11) Stannum: resist corrosion, especially from salt;

(12) Lanthanum: increases strength.

A chain is as strong as the weakest link. In this case the weakest link is Stannum (Latin), which is better known as Tin, and has a melting point of 449 degrees F (according to various sources via web search).The overall melting point of the XL304A alloy depends on the percent composition of each element in the alloy and is probably much higher than 449 degrees F, but I could not find a source to verify any more information on this alloy. I will contact CSC for more information on maximum safe usage temperatures and post if they respond.

Another reviewer who actually baked with these pieces noted that the plastic in the thermo control knob or handle inserts can melt in the oven. Fortunately, the handle inserts can be easily removed with a Phillips screwdriver (see pic) and the Thermo Control knob can be easily unscrewed left over the top, or "lefty-loosey" (see pic).

I have not used these pieces in the oven yet, but I might try at some point. If I do, I will remove the plastics, but I am not too worried about the metal melting since I rarely bake above 350 degrees F. Of course, I'm not an expert and recommend that anyone who chooses to bake with these pieces proceeds with caution and at their own risk. Aside from melting, the instructions warn that high temperatures may cause blue or golden-brown staining/discoloration (see cleaning note at end).

As mentioned above, the pieces are covered under a Limited Lifetime Warranty, backed by "CSC" with a P.O. Box address in Dallas, Texas. The warranty covers manufacturer's defects but does not cover handles and knobs (or melted cookwear). The warranty states that CSC will repair, replace, or return the piece within 30 days. The owner pays shipping both ways whether or not the piece is covered under the warranty.

The included "Instruction Book for Waterless Cooking" (see pic) is a handy reference and is well written; albeit, brief. It notes various advantages of Stainless Steel, gives basic care instructions, and outlines basic usage with cooking recommendations for different types of food and various recipes. Regardless of the instructions, you will probably burn a few things as this cookwear takes a little getting used to.

A note on cleaning... Stainless steel is supposed to "stain less" than regular steel but it doesn't mean that it will never stain. Burnt-on food and stains come up easily with boiling water or after soaking and scouring. BUT, you won't want to use a scouring pad on the exterior because it will be almost impossible to polish back to a mirror finish. Go to your local market or hardware store and purchase some stainless steel cleaner to keep the exteriors gleaming.

Happy cooking.

I've had this set for several years and absolutely love it.Clean-up is a breeze and yes, I've burned things in these pots.Soaking the pan removes most of the burned-on food an SOS or Brillo pad takes care of the rest.The lids can rest in the handles when you need them to a feature I really like.The set also allows for stack cooking a great help during the holidays!The waterless/greaseless method of cooking allows the natural flavor of foods to really pop.Don't add salt to vegetables they will taste way too salty if you do.Try cooking corn on the cob in it it comes out tasting like it's been salted AND buttered!Start out anything you cook on medium heat and then lower your temperature to medium low or low for the remainder of the cooking time.You should never have to use high heat ever again.Try stuffing a whole chicken with peppers and onions, throw in some potatoes and carrots, and you'll have one of the most wonderful meals ever season the meat only.The leftovers make the best chicken soup ever!Or season a roast as you normally would, throw in peppers, onions, potatoes, carrots the meat actually absorbs the pepper taste and it's great!I've never used this cookware in the oven, so can't attest to its ability to withstand external heat the look of the handles seems to preclude oven use, though.Also, be aware that food cooks much more quickly in this cookware, so be careful to not overcook it.The longer you cook it after it's done, the less juice you'll have.

I recieved this as a gift, and I absolutley love it! I am 23 years old and am just getting into cooking, the kind that doesn't include a microwave or boxed dinners. The first time I used the large pan was mildly irritating, because alot of the food stuck to it and it was a pain in the @ss to clean the burnt blackness off the bottom. Then, after reading the instructions (I like to use things without reading the instructions)it said that this cookware should NOT be used on high heat. You can by all means cook things that require high heat in the directions, but just turn the dial to 6 instead of 8 or 9. Once I figured this out I never had any more burnt pans or food stuck to the bottom. Also, these pans retain heat for a longer amount of time than regular cookware. I have turned the stove off and watched the food continue to cook for 4 to 5 minutes before simmering down. Overall, this cookware is very solid and well made, but you can't just start using it like you would your regular old cookware. It's made differently, with different materials and more layers so you have to read the directions, but once you get used to it you will never go back to "regular" cookware!

I've been using this set for 4 years now. The pots and pans themselves are great; they cook evenly and clean easily. My biggest complaint is the knobs. Up until 6 months ago I didn't have a dishwasher, so I had no problems because I was washing everything by hand. Since I've started using a dishwasher the plastic part of the knobs on the lids has become brittle and started breaking off. I have tried finding replacement knobs that fit but because the bolt that holds the knob on is attached to the lid, it's very difficult to find a knob that fits the exact length and diameter of that bolt. My husband is so fed up he's insisting I find a new cookware set.
