Looks nice, very durable, very heavy, very good for cooking tomatoes, very not non-stick.

Maybe there is a way of not getting the eggs to stick but I found regardless of how much fat is in the pan, the eggs still stick.

I replaced the previous model T-Fal fryer after its untimely demise. Liked the fryer basket handle design much better on the previous model than this one. The previous model lasted about three or four years, but really was only used a dozen or so times in that time frame. Not really impressed as I paid retail price on that one. Got this one 60% off of retail pricing, that is the only reason I replaced it with another T-Fal. Not much to mess up on these. The style is about all you can critique so long as the unit works, and the stainless on this unit makes it quite attractive. I will update when it dies, hopefully it is long enough that I can forget to come back here to update.

About a month ago I moved cross-country and went from a large kitchen to a pullman kitchen. I sold all of my cookware consisting of about 15 pots and pans comprised of Calphalon One Nonstick, Allclad, Copco, etc. I saw this nonstick set and purchased it because it utilizes Hydrolon®, an exclusive, eco-friendly, water-based solvent that replaces toxic PFOA solvents. I wasn't sure how good the nonstick would be, but it works great on my electric glass top range. I gave it my usual fried egg test and it slid right out of the pan without any oils. I then heated up the pan and put in a slice of swiss cheese for 5 minutes. It came out without leaving a mark. Having previously used top of the line nonstick cookware, this has proven to be of equal or better quality for 1/2 the price. Also, the glass lids have a small vent hole to permit steam venting so you can view what you are cooking. I am very pleased with my purchase. Also, the individual bags they use for packing is great for separating the pans when I put them on top of each other in the cupboard so the nonstick is protected. Nice touch. I have now added the 11 inch frypan to the set. I also like the fact that the cookware is induction compatible should I get an induction burner in the future. Oven safe to 350 degrees.

Nordic Ware Superior Steel 8 Inch Saute PanI disagree wholeheartedly with the other review; not only is Nordicware the best saute pan I've ever used; It has better a non-stick surface than any other piece of cookware I've ever used; baking pans, roasting pans included.

It looks great; it has a beautiful look; however, works extremely well. The handle never heats up, despite it being all-metal. Thanks to this lovely feature, I can also use it in my oven twice a week. :D It is also American-Made and a tremendous value. I wouldn't trust anything from China that touches my food for a second. It's not safe.

I would not purchase this pan again. It was supposed to be durable and non-stick. I was very dissatisfied with it's performance.

T-fal E918SC64 Ultimate Hard Anodized Nonstick Expert Interior Thermo-Spot Heat Indicator Anti-Warp Base Dishwasher Safe 12-Piece Cookware Set, GrayI was looking at the specific details of my cookset on here (I purchased mine at Kohl's for $30 MORE than amazon, silly me) but I noticed only one review and that it had but a single star.

This must be remedied.

First off, know that I cook A LOT. I love to cook, my family has a history in the food industry, and I currently work at a very highly rated restaurant. I know food, and I know cookware. I go for top quality or I throw cookware out of the kitchen.

I've always had the issue of never finding true quality in non-stick cookware. Many wanted to go aluminum to heat more quickly, but this left pans warping and sliding about on the kitchen top. Though my biggest problem was finding durable non-stick surfaces.

Secondly, this is the MOST durable non-stick surface I have ever seen (I have tested over a dozen different companies including many competitors including but not limited to Calphalon). I test these by taking my trusty titanium spork with me everywhere I go. If it can't scratch it (95% of the time it scratches straight to the underlying metal), then nothing I do in the kitchen will.

Also, this set heats amazingly well. I never get overburning, though I will warn you that the center (red dot) does heat slightly faster (but not hotter) than the surrounding areas, so be aware to avoid it when pan-searing meats and such.

Lastly, I know that it is marketed as dishwasher safe (I'm more than certain it is), but I highly recommend not doing so. This goes for ALL non-stick cookware. It is a coated material and I don't understand why you would anyway...the MOST effort I've ever had to do was to run water over it with dawn and a brush for less than 30 seconds, then dry with a single paper towel...It's done. Why would you risk shortening the life of your cookware.

In conclusion, This is a great product that I would recommend to anyone. It's durable, well-weighted, and (in my house) has put out some of the most beautifully cooked culinary dishes ever eaten by a privileged wife =)

When, I first received these pans I was truly excited to finally find a set that I could use with metal utensils.I even emailed T-FAL directly just to make sure of this fact before I ordered them.We hand wash all our pans even though these are dishwasher safe.I have had no issues with the frying pans they are still in excellent shape and live up to the T-FAL name, but the other pans in the set are a different story.The non-stick coating on the inside has deteriorated, and it appears as though the pans are rusting.We have stopped using them.

In addition in order to use the "Limited Lifetime Warranty" I must send them back at my own expense to one of the company's authorized repair shops.Even then it is questionable as to whether or not they will be repaired, replaced, or even sent back to me free of charge.I am debating what to do.Perhaps, I will send them back after the holidays, but I will definitely call the repair shop prior to sending them.

DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Since i do most of the cooking I really like the T-Fal. Wife not so much because i won't let her put them in the dishwasher. Suppose to be dishwasher safe but I have seen other brands say that and it didn't turn out so good. We did wash one in the dishwasher and it spotted up bad, so no more. Small price to pay for keeping this cookware in good shape. Don't know what her gripe is as it cleans up very easy.

Totally agree with above. I had identical problems. Doesn't fit in dishwasher, and more importantly doesn't work. Power device does not attach correctly and the power goes off and on making it almost impossible to cook anything. The heating, when it does work is so uneven you will want to scream in frustration. I was surprized as my last Oster griddle was great. After last use I was so aggravated I too threw the griddle away in order to force mayself to buy a new one. To put further sting on this experience, when I went on Amazon to buy a different one I found the original order and realized that the griddle I had ordered was not the one I recieved from 3rd party seller steamertrunkbooks.This was back in May and now is too late for me to do anything about it. My own fault for not realizing it was the wrong one.Buyer beware...Bottom line, the one I ordered was one I had previously and it was great for cooking though a bit involved to keep clean.

cook only eggs in it and use the minimumamount of heat needed.Sometimes it does stick a little but comes loose with a little push.I do use "better butter" (part butter and part canola)and try to spread a thin coat also a bit up the sides sometimes by using a pastry brush.There seems to be no pan that maintains a perfect non-stick ability.This pan is heavy which does make it function better.I bought it because of the resaonable price, because the non-stick surface is supposed to be more eco-friendly, and because of the Farberware name.

bought it as I did not want to buy teflon.it was difficult to clean from the start -it didn't feel like non stick. I used it to make omelet, and heat some indian tortillas---the gray surface turned brown --with 2-3 uses and now 1 mth later the pan is completely black. It was a total waste of money. I never put it in the dishawsher. I don;t want cookware to last forever but this didn't last even a wk .. would never recommend to buy it .

I wanted an Earthpan because I heard great reviews of them in Consumer Reports.I am a pretty serious home chef and was willing to pay an inordinate amount of money for a non-stick pan that cooked well and cleaned easily.So I was pleasantly suprised to see this was reasonably priced.This pan cooks well but the pan is not easy to clean at all.I have had to use steel wool to get this pan clean.That's sucks.I mean I had to get out all kinds of elbow grease to clean this pan and I was upset by that.

My Earth Pan Hard Anodized Nonstick 10 inch skillet was a big disappointment.Because I have had many non-stick fry pans over the years and I realize that their life span is short even though we follow all the directions, I thought that this product seemed more durable and more able to fit my needs.I followed all the many directions for use (including ones we weren't warned about because we have a Corning stove top)but it was purchased August 18 online from Amazon, and here it is May 18, 2011 and a cast iron skillet compares favorably to it (and would have been much cheaper).

T-fal Simply Delicioso D1835463 Nonstick Dishwasher Safe Hard Enamel 5.5-Quart Caldero with Glass Lid Cookware, BlueWe are the one-pot-meal enthusiastic kind of family and this pot turned to be our best friend immediately. It's actually our second one as the first pot's teflon surface started chipping quite soon. We did not use any sharp tools for stirring, however few times we used the top heat settings, what is not recommended. The rest of our T-fal pots and pans are however holding completely OK, which is maybe also a reason, why this new one arrived with obviously new surfase technology (they probably experienced some more cases with the old one...).

I am not sure if this all writing is understandable therefore the bottomline is:

This product is superb for frying, one potting, gratinating and baking and the 2nd generation teflon surface makes it much more durable than its predecessor.

I bought this product because I liked the color and also loved the glass lid. This pan works so wonderfully, it's the right size for so many dishes! I love the fact that you can see what's cooking without removing the lid and they were very smart with the design putting a hole in there to release the steam. Very clever indeed! Would definitely recommend this to all my friends.

We liked that it was easier to store than a traditional long handled pan.After it finally wore out we tried to find another without any luck.We then came across this Caldero.While its not really a fry pan, it actually has worked out better as its more versatile. This pan is perfect for a variety of things.I am surprised at how often I reach for it.The only negative, if you want to call it that, is that it's lighter and thinner than my other pans.Considering it's size, I really can't call it a real negative for me.Very pleased.

Swiss Diamond HD Pro Stainless Steel Nonstick Skillet: 11'We've had the 11" Pro for a bit over a year.When we switched to induction, we settled on their induction ready aluminum pan and the HD Pro.

Within a year, the non-stick coating has started to bubble and recently lift. We hit the pan pretty hard with heat at times. However, we never had an issue with Scan pans (pre induction) or non-stick Viking pans post induction. The Swiss Diamond induction ready aluminum pans have held up fine but are not subjected to high heat cooking. If you expect to cook with high heat I'd take a pass on this pan.

Another issue is stains. We keep our pans in good shape and very clean. This pan looks like a mess. Stains all over the sides, the bottom is a mottled mix of shades of stainless steel. We've tried stainless steel polish, the cream for our Miele cooktop, Soft Scub and stainless steel wool. Nothing will remove them short of a shop grinder.

Last, we live in both the USA and Switzerland. This brand does not exist in the Swiss market. What does exist are Spring pans (Spring being the mother company). The Spring pans look very similar, if not identical for the aluminum pans.I assume they are the same thing. What's interesting is the Spring pans, while not supermarket cheap, are inexpensive middle market pans. And not all that popular judging from their limited distribution.

I'm taking a pass on Swiss Diamond in the future. First, for a moderately priced pan, our old Scan pans easily out lasted not only this one but our prior non-induction Swiss Diamonds. For a more expensive pan, our quite old Viking non-stick has put up with 7 years of intense heat just fine.Second, they certainly appear overpriced to me. We have all European cookware with the exception of a big Viking fry pan. Paying moderate prices, you get good pans. With this Swiss Diamod, paying a premium price got us an inferior pan.



Almost every other nonstick skillet has rivets that attach the handle, and food often sticks to the rivets and around the rivets.Swiss Diamond welds the handles so there are no rivets, and cleaning the skillet is much easier.

I have had two other Swiss Diamond nonstick pans for about a year and the nonstick coating has held up very well under daily use.

Agree with earlier review, inferior andoverpriced, for $150 at Costco any smart buyer can get a high quality complete set (5-6 pans!) that will last way longer than this.

Do your math... even if this 1 pan would be 30% better you loose... a lot!

We have had this pan almost a year now, and being the foodies that we are, we use it all the time. I waited to write this review to see how it stood up to the test of time. Our last non-stick pan, after less than a year of use, was becoming warped and less and less "non-stick", but this beauty is still working just as well as the day we first started using her.

Sure it does come with a premium price tag, but when you we thought about the fact that you could spend your money replacing a chintzy an pan periodically throughout the year why not go with a product that is going to last? This is a great pan for the price. It is made for cooking and not beauty. I has the large handle on the opposite side for easy carrying when full of food. So if you want a fancy pan, this is not it. If you want a practical large skillet at a low price, then this it. It is at home on an outdoor grill, kitchen range and even in the oven. Only problem is a 14 in lid is hard to find.

The pan is attractive in color, a deep pan, heats easily. In many ways it is perfect and if I had a gas range I would have given it five stars. However, although the pan bottom is perfectly flat it does still spin easily on a glass cooktop even with a heavy lid on it. I'll keep it since I am the only cook in the house so will remember to be careful when using it.

This pan heats quickly and evenly, and doesn't confer the same texture to the sear as a cast iron does.It's a much more "naked" finished product.So far, I've noticed that the spices and herbs are more up-front than doing something in cast iron.I'm comparing this to cast iron because that's my only reference point for another pan that retains heat, takes a seasoning, and can become extremely non-stick and "self-healing".

I'll update this review after I have some more time with the pan.I wanted to get this up today because I see a lot of different advice on how to season this pan, and I have some relatively foolproof instructions for you.

My wife and I ordered this pan as a lighter weight alternative to cast iron.While it's going to see plenty of kitchen duty, our first use of it will be camping in the wilderness.A really permanent, bulletproof seasoning takes use, care, and time.I needed one tough enough to withstand use and storage in a relatively uncontrolled environment for a few days without rusting.So here's my quick-seasoning guide.Takes a couple of hours, but always produces good results.If you skip or modify any steps, you won't get the same results (this is aimed at those who will invariably try to use grapeseed oil or something as a substitution)

1) You *do* need to peel a couple of potatoes, put the peels in the pan, cover them with an inch of water, and boil for 15 minutes as the instructions mention.There's some sort of shipping coating on this pan that this step removes.You will NOT get a good season on this pan until this coating is removed.While boiling the peels (just the peels, not the potatoes, this step is going to produce inedible results), carefully move the boiling water around the pan by tilting it back and forth.Get that enzymatic, chemically water around all possible cooking surfaces.

2) After 15 minutes of boiling time (not counting the time to get the water to a boil), drain the water, throw out the peels, and dry the pan thoroughly with a paper towel or two.Oil the pan *lightly* with Crisco, lard, clean bacon grease, or peanut oil. Cover the entire pan, bottom and all ... get everything coated except the handle.

*Don't* use canola, olive oil, or any other type of oil right now.You can use them for cooking in the future, but not for this step.

3) I think this is the critical point where people make mistakes. Most people seem to use too high of a heat for an initial seasoning, and/or an uneven heat.Get your oven pre-heated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.Place a clean cookie sheet (uncoated if possible, not non-stick) on the lowest rack to catch drips.Place the pan upside down on the rack above the cookie sheet, and set the timer for 30 minutes.

4) After 30 minutes, let it stay in the oven for another 30 minutes with the heat off, so it can slowly cool.A slow cooling process really helps the seasoning develop in my experience.

5) Once the pan is cool, take it out of the oven, and wipe it down with a different type of high temperature oil.If you used peanut oil first, this time use Crisco.If you used Crisco first, this time use bacon grease.This is the key.Different oils have different properties, and they'll bond to each other in different ways.I've seasoned a lot of pans in my time, and mixing and matching different oils for the process always results in a much more thorough seasoning, that doesn't flake off easily.

6) Now, repeat step 3 and 4 exactly.

7) You should now have a good initial seasoning.This process will take about 2.5 hours, of which, you'll mostly be waiting.

To keep it developing, here's all you need to know.Yes, the instructions say you can use a little bit of soap.Don't.Just don't.The heat of the pan will kill all possible pathogens.Just gently scrape the remaining food out of the pan when you're finished cooking, and let it cool naturally.When it's just warm to the touch, add a 2" puddle of oil to your pan, and rub it down with a paper towel.If something is really stuck to it, add a pinch or two of kosher salt or sea salt to the pan, and use that to scrub gently with a paper towel, and then re-oil it.That's all you should ever need to do.If you constantly resort to a hard bristle brush and (uggh) use soap, your seasoning will develop poorly and slowly.

ALWAYS store the pan lightly oiled.ALWAYS.If it looks dry, you're doing it wrong.When it comes time to cook, just put some fresh oil on a paper towel, and wipe it out to remove the old oil.

Don't heat the pan scorching hot for long when it's empty, as this will weaken an early seasoning layer and it might flake off in the beginning.

Don't use metal tools immediately.Try to stick to plastic, wood, or silicone tools for the first few sessions of cooking.

There, that's that.I hope these tips help some people get started with a tool that, properly cared for, will last a lifetime and be far more non-stick than any teflon surface could ever hope to be.

Regarding the safety of oven temperatures and the silicone pad at the top of the handle:

I'm pretty sure it's silicone, though I don't see it addressed anywhere in the manual or online.

My silicone portion looks as new as ever after about 2 dozen trips through the oven.All the other silicone tools we own state 500 degrees Fahrenheit as a maximum temperature, so I have a feeling you shouldn't exceed that as an oven temperature.I have used the pan over a 700F direct heat source without any issues as well.I don't feel there are any safety concerns with silicone at temps below 500F in an oven, as we use silicone baking mats that are much thinner material quite often, and there's never any smell or taste from them at any baking temperature.

Some people use a self-clean cycle in the oven to remove a badly damaged layer of seasoning, but I don't think I will ever do this with mine, as those cycles tend to go to 1000F or higher, and I think that would melt or destroy the silicone portion of the handle.

After reading that NY Times article on nonstick pans, I was looking for an alternative.(It said even the most expensive nonstick pans, with the best possible care, only last 5-6 years.)Food stuck in my stainless fry pans, and cast iron is so heavy and kind of a pain to care for.Then someone recommended carbon steel, which I thought was only for woks.

I love it.Carbon steel is not nearly as heavy as cast iron, so it's easier to handle. It's also smoother, so seasoning is less critical. There are some elaborate instructions for seasoning out there on the net, but all that is not necessary. Follow the manufacturer's simple directions, and you're good to go.

I'm using my new 8" carbon steel pan for everything I used to use nonstick for.It's working beautifully, and I'm kicking myself for not buying these years ago.I've already ordered another, in a larger size.

Carbon steel is very affordable, and should last a lifetime several lifetimes even, which is important to me. I'm not that worried about nonstick carcinogens, or about the expense of replacing them regularly. But I don't like the idea of sending pans to the landfill every five years if it's not necessary.

One thing to watch for: carbon steel pans have sloping sides that make the bottoms of the pans the cooking surface smaller than in comparable stainless steel or cast iron pans.I found this list of dimensions for De Buyer pans on a cookware site:

I am a big fan of these carbon steel pans. They season much the same as cast iron pans and need to be taken care of in the same manner as cast iron. Once they are nicely seasoned they are virtualy non-stick. They distribute heat very rapidly and evenly and work well on any burner surface from gas to induction glass top. They are perfect for sticking into the oven or running something under the broiler. The big advantage over cast iron is the long handle that makes them much easier to lift and handle, these pans are heavy, and the shape with the rounded sides.

If you screw up the seasoning by burning something, simply run the pan through a cycle of a self cleaning oven. All the accumulated grease and crud will come off, rinse off and carefully dry. The pan will be as new and will need to be re-seasoned much as a brand new pan. With a minum of care these pans last a lifetime.

Do not confuse these pans with much less expensive and much lighter weight French style steel pans. Those heat unevenly and get hot spots.

I've bought quite a few of the de Buyer pans recently on Amazon,based on an old pan I've used for years that's quite obviously my "go-to" pan for cooking.In hindsight at age 45,I could have saved hundreds of dollars over the years by buying nothing but de Buyer.I wish I had.I'm writing this as a review of the de Buyer Mineral 10" fry pan simply because it's the one piece that would be a good purchase for anyone wishing to experience this type of cookware.

Before you buy: you should note that this pan (and carbon steel pans in general) aren't likely to look pristine after the first few uses,if you're using and treating them right--they look more used after each time you cook with them.The "natural non-stick" surface builds up over time due to the cooking oils forming a glaze on the cooking surface.The outer part of the pan will become discolored due to the direct heat (especially with gas stoves) and spills and whatnot.If you expect to have shiny cookware forever,forget carbon steel.Carbon steel cookware (or "black steel" or "blue steel" or whatever the manufacturer calls it) is chemically only a bit more treated metal than cast iron--the de Buyer "Mineral" items are touted as being 99% iron.They claim it's recyclable inasmuch as it's pretty much iron.The manufacturer also claims it's non-stick without using fluorinated materials or coatings.That goes without saying,since you create the "non-stick surface" with use.

If shiny pristine appearance over time isn't an issue,and you don't mind NOT being able to put it in soaking water or a dishwasher,or to scrub it down to a shiny surface after each use,the only other concern I can think of is iron content in your diet.If you're one of the few people who has an EXCESS of iron in your diet,you'll be getting more cooking in carbon steel cookware (just like you would cooking in cast iron).

All that being said,this is the cookware to use for real cooking.The de Buyer "Mineral" products are sturdy,conduct heat quite well,hold heat quite well,and you may find yourself modifying your cooking times for sauteing or stir-frying.It's almost funny to cook an omelette in this pan after the first pass of cleaning and seasoning--it's not so much "non stick" as it is "the egg wants to get out of the pan RIGHT NOW",and that just gets more obvious the longer you use the pan.The larger fry pans (12" and above) and the so-called French pans (10" and above) should probably be listed as weapons.

The main drawback in some uses may be the handles--they are angled up,and are quite long,so may not fit your oven as you're used to.

A previous review discussed the cleaning and seasoning steps out of the box.Using potato peels and near-boiling water probably works just as well as the simpler hot-to-boiling water followed by a little bit of soap and hot water,then a rinse.In fact,the de Buyer website video for the "Mineral" pans only suggests hot water and wipe-down before the oil treatment--no potato was used or harmed in their video.

This is true for any carbon-steel pan.You want to remove the manufacturing residue,leave nothing behind,and then start the seasoning process with hot oil.You'll need to continue adding a slight sheen of oil over time when storing it,which (as the other reviewer pointed out) isn't that big a deal.What you DON'T want to do is scrub the pan in soapy water,or soak it,or put it in a dishwasher.Basically,after each use,if there are chunks in the pan,deglaze with hot water and scrape the chunks with the edge of a steel spatula.Rinse,dry well (which you can do by putting on the burner until it's dry),let it cool,and wipe a little oil using a paper towel on the food contact surface.It's not that difficult--it's actually quite easy: deglaze and scrape off the chunks,get it dry,put a little oil sheen on it,and store until you use it again.For my "go-to" pan,storing usually means leaving on top of the stove until tomorrow.

The first time you do the cleaning/seasoning,you'll notice that the paper towel becomes colored with stains (grey to dark grey to almost black).This is normal.You can either repeat the initial cleaning/seasoning,or not worry about it.From what I can gather at other sources (including de Buyer),the protective coating applied before shipping is beeswax or a derivative.If and when you wipe it down after the first few uses (before you start building up the patina),you may see these stains.

Like cast iron cookware,you can cook acidic foods in carbon steel cookware.You don't want to leave it sitting in the cookware,and you probably don't want to boil lemon juice or vinegar in it unless you really want a boost in your iron supplement.Highly acidic liquids can also remove some of the built-up "coating" after some use,which is more of a pain in the butt than it is damaging.

Finally,a comment: you may have noticed in some restaurants (or on cooking shows where the kitchen is shown) that there seem to be a large number of stained and battered pans being put over high flames and used to turn out fantastic dishes in a short period of time.In many cases,where the restaurant is owned by some famous TV chef who touts his or her own cooking line,what is used in the working kitchen looks nothing like what the chef is offering as a product to buy for Mom next Xmas.The useful stained battered pans are likely to be something like this pan.Utilitarian and trustworthy,but over time,not that attractive.

Norpro Nonstick Omelet PanI was a bit nervous about purchasing this item because of the price and was afraid it'd be just really cheap and not work well. So far I've had no issues with this pan and have made some of my best omelettes. Both real eggs and egg beaters have been used in this pan, and both types come out nice and fluffy. The pan does not come assembled, however, the only assembly required is screwing the handle on both parts of the pan, nothing major. The only thing I'd recommend, as I would with any pan regardless of "non-stick", I'd use a non-stick spray when cooking. I've done this and have had absolutely no issues with sticking and clean up is very easy.



pan arrived unaslembled with no instructions for aslemby or use. coating began to peel off after fourth use with no implements ever touching the surface of the pan.

The very first time we used it some of the non-stick coating came off while making omlets.We even used cooking oil.We should have gotten one with a better coating, but there is no way to tell from their description.Handle needs to be tighten every so often too.

Lodge Logic L8DOL3 Pre-Seasoned Dutch Oven with Dual Handles, 5-QuartWhen I saw the price,free shipping, and factory pre-seasoning,this dutch oven proved irresistable. The size is great and the black color was attractive.Sadly, the factory pre-seasoning did not meet expectations! I learned to cook using cast iron, and I still own several "original finish" cast iron skillets, griddles and specialty pans (tri-ply stainless steel is wonderful, but some things just cook more evenly with cast iron). While cast iron is not difficult to season,it was just an added bonus to order a dutch oven that I thought would have an even, well applied finish to begin the seasoning process (properly seasoned cast iron pans only get better over the years). When the dutch oven arrived, I was surprised by what seemed to be a discoloration under the finish on the inner surface of the pot lid. I used the dutch oven for the first time to make chili. The steam from the chili caused the "pre-seasoning" on the inner surface of the lid to mottle badly, and the area that had initially appeared discolored was revealed to be covered withrust. A tell-tale metallic smell was also present (usually a sign that your pan might need to be seasoned again). Needless to say, I was disapointed. This pan proved to be MORE effort than the original finish pans since I had to scrub down the lid to remove the remainingmottled pre-seasoning, and to remove the rust. I then just seasoned the lid properly the old-fashion way in my oven. All in all, the Dutch oven is well worth $25 (and the saved $12.66 in shipping charges is also appreciated), but the Lodge Cast Iron Manufacturing Co. has a reputation for quality that this finish did not meet.I contacted the company to express my concerns (ie, did I need to take additional steps to remove all of the factory applied finish) and to ask if this problem was evident in other pans in the pre-seasoned line.The Lodge Co. has not responded to my email. Bottom line, before paying full price plus shipping, for anything in the pre-seasoned line, I would compare the cost to the original finish, or to the beautiful new Lodge enamel cast iron items.



Short review.This will become one of the most important pieces in your kitchen.I like the handles better than the other lodges, and NOTHING compares to cast iron.

Alton Brown raves about this thing and for good reason. He also writes of a casserole pot, don't get it unless you are a chef.This works everywhere that one does.An excellent buy.

My only word of caution.I love the loop handles, but IF you are one of the rare people who still cook with a campfire, get the other 5qt lodge.

First off I enjoy quality kitchen tools. I never minded paying for a quality tool. But when you get prenium quality at a rock bottom price, well it just doesn't get any better than that. Also any of the cast iron products from Lodge will easily last a lifetime or two, with minimal care. I previously owned a 7 quart duch oven and loved it. But my daughter finally has moved out, and it's just the wife and I at home now, so I downsized to a 5 quart dutch oven. I was happy to see Lodge offer a dutch oven with side handles instead of a wire bail, because we do most of our cooking at home in our oven, not at a campfire. The 5 quart dutch oven and 10 inch skillet would be a perfect gift for someone just starting out in life. They probably would not realize the value of what they recieved, until they are cooking a pot roast or a pot of chili for their grandchildren thirty years later. Update May 2011. I just purchased another Lodge 5qt. dutch oven to give to my daughter's boyfriend as a birthday gift. We gave him a 12" Lodge cast iron skillet a few months back, and he loves it! Our daughter tells us he uses it every single day. So we thought we would add to his cast iron collection, by giving him a 5qt. dutch oven. At the very least he can learn to make chili and pot roast. By the way, I got an exception deal on this dutch oven on Amazon.com. The lowest price I have ever seen on this item, and free shipping too. I hope he learns to love this Lodge 5 qt. dutch oven as much as he does his Lodge 12" skillet. Once you learn to use your cast iron dutch oven, your crock pot will never get used again. Our grandparents knew something that many people today don't know. Cast Iron cookware works well, and works for the long run.

The dutch overn itself is just what I expected: sturdy and indestructible cast iron. The pre-seasoning was blotchy. I removed it with detergent and water, then re-seasoned using the directions in the old Joy of Cooking: coat generously with grease/oil, place in 450 degree F. oven for 30 minutes. Much better.

Why five stars if the title says "fourteen pounds of grief"? Read on.

I got this probably six months ago, and had a moment of laziness. Normally, I'd go ahead and add several more layers of seasoning, even on the pre-seasoned iron. But I didn't this time. Which was ok. The Lodge pre-season isn't perfect, and they don't claim it is. It's just a good head start.

Shortly after I got this, my wife and I left my step-daughter house-sitting for the weekend. When we got back, I found my new dutch oven ruined. Apparently, my step-daughter had burned something in it, helpfully grabbed a stainless steel scrubby and some Comet cleaner and tried to scrub out the crunchies. She only succeeded in scrubbing off the seasoning, but not the burned-on stuff. So she threw it in the sink to soak.

Yep, pretty much a complete list of things you should not do to cast iron.

The bottom four inches of the dutch oven were solid orange rust. My wife took one look at the expression on my face and started hustling her daughter out the front door. I wasn't going to kill her. Honest. Especially when I realized that the five-quart pot was way too big to serve as an urn for her ashes.

Instead, I grabbed some sandpaper, took the rust down to bare metal, coated the pan with lard and threw it in the oven. Rinse, lather repeat.

And that's the beauty of cast iron. You can't mess it up, and if you do mess it up, you can fix it. My dutch oven is better now than when it was new, and it will only continue to improve.

It's forever-ware. Lodge makes a great product, right here in America, and you can't buy better cast iron. I love mine for stews, and for the occasional batch of no-knead bread. Oven, cooktop or charcoal grill, this dutch oven turns out delicious food.
