Lodge Pro-Logic P10S3 Pre-Seasoned Skillet, 10-inch

Lodge Pro-Logic P10S3 Pre-Seasoned Skillet, 10-inchI have nothing but Lodge Logic cast iron, and I do omelettes regularly. So I bought this skillet for it's rounded shape.

Pro:

It heats well and the surface will release food.

Rounded edges are good for omelettes and other foods that need to slide off of the pan.

Sturdy construction.

Con:

In order to round out the edges, they had to make this skillet very heavy. It is heavier than my 12 inch conventional design cast iron skillet. I am a pretty strong person, but this is heavy even for me. It isn't a lot of help in making omelettes when one has to struggle to slide the finished product out and that is a one-handed operation.

Because of the design, the bottom of the pan (cooking area) is actually about 9", whereas a conventional design is almost as big on the bottom as the top.

Due to the thickness of the walls, it takes longer to heat up than my other skillets.

Conclusion:

There is a reason that cast iron skillets adopted a certain design about 150 years ago. The conventional design allows for a lighter construction, less weight, and more cooking surface. Yes, the skillet can cook, but I would not purchase this item again. It is inconveniently heavy, takes a long time to heat up, and has a small cooking area for the weight.

I've been cooking with cast iron for over 3 decades and now have more than 30 pieces.I ordered this skillet because of the sloped sides, but have come to love the shape of the handle as well.Add in the assist handle and this is an incredible pan.At 8 pounds, it is heavy, but that weight helps it heat evenly.I rarely prepare omlets, but fried eggs with cheese and salsa work well in this pan as does reheating food in the oven. The pre-seasoned finish is great, but clean it according to Lodge's recommendations, or you'll have to re-season it.

I got this weeks ago, but it took making a steak in it on Wednesday night to convince me of the amazing-ness of cast iron. The steak was awesome, especially considering that we made it on a glass-top electric range. We've made steaks in the same way tons of times before (onions, garlic, salt pepper, a bit of soy sauce), and this cut of meat wasn't any fancier (it was left over from the week before in the freezer); they often just tasted like we fried it when we, well, fried it in the nonstick 'grill-pan', this one didn't taste like fried dead meat: it tasted like magic! It did splatter quite a bit, however, and I smelled like a greasy steak for hours after making the steak, but what a steak it was! Every bit of marinate: bits of garlic, onion, whateves formed a thick BLACK charcoal crust after we were done, and I was really scared that it was either permanently sealed or too hard to clean, and I'd give upand THEN it'd be permanent, but with just a lil water, reheating, and some light scraping and it was good as new, maybe even better.

The pan did come with a few (2) rust spots/un-seasoned spots, but they were on the edges, so I didn't care. I actually like that the actual cooking surface was a bit less than 10inches, since I often cook for 3 or less, but yes, it is a lil' less than 10 inch of actual cooking space. I've been gettting more and more paranoid and annoyed of cooking with the cheap nonsticks we have (since I cant afford the fancy nonsticks) and thisat the same price (probably even less)not only performs MUCH better but will probably lasts forever: I'm a college student with housematesif it can break or scratchit WILL. Even if you dont eat steaksit'll add a little bit of iron neededto your diet; last time I looked, teflon wasn't listed on any nutritional label as a needed nutrient, something about dead birds, though?

I switched to cast iron cookware a few months ago and have been in love with them. Since then I've bought the 12" skillet, 10" griddle and now the 10" skillet.

This particular skillet is divine! The design is so ergonomic. The handle has a much better grip and my favorite is the sloping sides. Makes a perfect omelette or whatever you are cooking in it.

Maintenance is pretty simple too since I am used to the cast iron pans. I just use hot water and the rough side of my sponge and after wiping it dry I just spread a little bit of vegetable oil and its ready for use!

Believe it or not, it really is non-stick and gets better with each use.

I greatly prefer cast iron over most other materials for skillets and such. It's all about the even heat. Of course weight is an issue, but that's unfortunately true of anything that does retain heat the only competetor is cast aluminum and I wonder if there might be problems with ingesting that metal in tiny, regular quantities.

But iron; iron is GOOD for you, and most of us don't get quite enough as it is.

This particular skillet is ideal for omelettes, and due to the shape, will make them more gracefully than any gimcrack omelette gizmo you have ever tried. Just get the pan sizzlng hot, give it a quick spray of canola oil and toss in your prepaired omelette.

And if you like thick, fluffy, amazing omelets, use twice as many eggs and fill with whatever, dump it in, and let the bottom cook as you half a cup of grated cheddar mixed with a couple tablespoons of salsa. Throw it into a pre-heated 400' oven and cook until a tooth-pick comes out clean.

Serve in wedges with salsa mixed with sour cream for gourmet-level breakfast goodness. You needn't tell anyone it's easier to time than fried eggs over easy on toast.

Scanpan Classic 14-inch Fry Pan

Scanpan Classic 14-inch Fry PanI bought my 14 inch Scanpan at a chef supply store more than five years ago. The first year or so I used this pan constantly for everything from fried eggs to fried rice. The non stick surface was excellent, and I was extremely happy with the performance. At first, since it was rated to do so I did use metal utensils on it; I did manage to create two small scratches though so at some point I switched to using wood or nylon utensils in this pan. BTW, since they say metal utensils are okay to use I felt the scratches were a warranty issue and long story short the warranty claim was denied. A little more than five years later I'm not sorry I bought his pan but considering the sum of the reasons below, it's unlikely that I would buy another:

Pros:

Outstanding performance in the nonstick department for about 18 months of heavy use.

This pan is so large I store it in the oven so of course eventually I forgot to check the oven before turning it on and there was no damage to either the handle or pan.

The "lip" across the other side of the handle makes it easier to move the pan if it's loaded; just grab with a potholder and it acts like a second handle.

It cleans up very easily. When new it is effortless but even these days even when stuff is stuck to it, I just put the pan back on the warm stove, add a cup or two of water to the pan and let it sit for a half hour or so, and using a nylon dish brush everything comes off relatively easily.

The surface of my pan has never bubbled or warped and other than the couple of scratches, today, over five years later it might be a shade darker but looks just about as good as the day I bought it.

Cons:

Relatively expensive for the time it remains truly non stick.

For such a large surface it does heat fairly evenly on a gas stove but on an electric I find that it heats quite unevenly.

The non stick nature is long since a memory but I still use this pan. With things that should NOT stick like bacon cooked over low slow heat I find that the surface gets brown bits stuck to it and I have to watch the pan carefully to avoid burning the contents.

Bottom line: As far as non stick choices go, these are especially expensive and since non stick apparently has a finite lifespan no matter what it's made of or who it's made by, maybe there are less expensive, more even heating, better performing choices out there. Some may point out the "lifetime warranty" *IF* they will honor it but returning a 14 inch HEAVY pan at my expense would still mean upwards of $20-25 of additional cost to me *plus* any handling fees. So, with consideration of the cost and performance versus lifespan of this pan, for a little less than two "good" years of non stick service I'd have to say I would not purchase this brand of pans again.

This is my third Scanpan purchase and I love their products.Several years ago I had a problem with 1 pan and was able to return it for a replacement after 2 years of use.I am totally satisfied with their products.

I need the extra size fry pan frequently as in making several paninnis or other large dish.this heats evenly and maintains non stick quality with reasonable care and clean up.I have had one for three years and this is my second.

The best fry pan I have ever used. Love the 14 inch size. Using on a induction range with the max. heating element being 12 inchsyet the pan heats evenly out to the fully 14 inchs of pan width. Get great cooking results and never need to heat above medium even for stir-fry.

The non-stick surface of the pan is truly non-stick to this point after 3 months of use. Now have three of these pans: a 10 inch and a 8 inch. I follow the care instructions by hand washing right after use while the pan is still warm and never use metal utensils. Have used other premium fry-pans such as All-Clad and the Scanpan fry-pan out perform on all counts.

I wanted a 14 inch frying pan to make cooking for additional guests easier.I have 2 older Scanpans that guaranteed the finish whether metal or non-metal utensils were used.I did have to return one of the older Scanpans that had pitted, but have been happy with this brand overall. My older pans are not truly non-stick and do require some soaking depending upon what has been cooked in them. The new pan does recommend using non-metal utensils to protect the non-stick finish. It cleans beautifully, so you don't need any non-stick spray.Non-stick spray can actually make cleaning non-stick pans much more difficult.Afterall, that's the point of getting a non-stick finish to begin with.I don't use the pan often, but have been very happy with it's performance. It is about 14.5 inches across and 23.5 inches from handle to handle(outside measurements).I also purchased the glass lid and have used it every time I've used the pan. It is somewhat heavy, so having the small extension handle on the pan has been very helpful. The extension handle does get hot so make sure to use a good hot pad when lifting.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend purchasing both the pan and glass lid if you cook for larger groups. It's a good investment.

Smart Planet CDM-2 Pigs in a Blanket Maker

Smart Planet CDM-2 Pigs in a Blanket MakerI bought this feeling a little blind--there were no reviews and the product information didn't indicate how big the finished product is.I've used the mini-donut maker Smart Planet MCM-1 Mini Cupcake Maker before and read all the reviews for the corn dog maker Smart Planet CDM-1 Corn Dog Maker which helped me make my decision to purchase this product.

I've used it twice--the first time I used gluten free waffle batter, the second time I made gluten free corn bread some with diced up hot dogs. Each well holds 2-3 tablespoons of batter. If the wells aren't filled enough the tops don't brown. If they are filled too full the batter runs out and connects the wells, which wasn't a problem as the batter still cooks.Clean up was easy.

These make great little finger foods. I love that I don't have to heat up the oven to have nice baked goods.

Update: I made non-gluten free treats for family.I made mini pigs in blankets with little smokies wrapped in refrigerator biscuit dough like Grands. I split the dough into 3 sections and wrapped each section around a little smokies. I did the same thing with colby/jack cheese sticks--cut the cheese stick into 3 section and wrapped the biscuit dough around each section. This was a big hit with the grandkids. Another treat was just a basic muffin mix from the supermarket. This was very popular with my grown kids and grandkids alike.

This little machine is the best invention ever!I can't believe I was making mini corn dogs by hand in a Fry Daddy for my daughter who has numerous food allergies...now I just whip a batch of corn dogs or pizza rolls whenever she feels like having them and there is no mess to clean up.Great directions and suggestions included.

I totally agree with the other reviewers, this is a wonderful machine.I just received the machine and have made four helpings of mini corn dogs.It is not rocket science. The first time I placed the batter into the small cells, it leaked a tad, but not too much to be a problem. The next three times were a breeze.Yes, you have to cut the hot dogs in smaller pieces, but SO, just a few seconds to accomplish this feat.It is so fun to use and once the cooking is complete, you smile at your accomplishment. I read many reviews on this maker before I bought it. It works great and my kids love the bit size treats. Make sure you heat the unit and oil the reservoirs before using it.

The first time I used it I used refrigerated croissant rolls and precooked breakfast sausages. I had to cut the sausages to fit into the reservoirs.I cut the dough triangles into smaller pieces and wrapped the dough around the sausages. It worked real nice and only took a few minutes to cook.

I also tried cheese. I did the same with the cheese as the sausage. I cut them to small pieces to fill the reservoir and covered them completely with dough (leaving no holes.)If you try cheese, this can be real messy if you use too much or cook it too long. The first time I used cheese I let it cook too long. It was a little messy and I had to clean it up before using the unit again. The second time I chilled the cheese in the refrigerator and made sure I didn't cook it too long. (I believe I only let it cook two minutes.) This worked a lot better and didn't make a mess. Next time I am going to try chilling or freezing the cut pieces of cheese before cooking.

I gave this unit 4 stars instead of 5 because you cannot remove the plates for cleaning. I wish one of these companies would make a unit with removable and exchangeable plates, so you don't have to buy several units to do pigs in a blanket, brownies, donut holes, etc.

Nordic Ware Holiday Pancake Pan

Nordic Ware Holiday Pancake PanSo cute! (see customer images). Mine is an older version, I think, because mine only has 4shapes (I didn't get it on amazon). I wish that mine had seven like this one though, because 4 at a time is slow! My only complaint is that you have to be patient fliping them over. it is hard to get the spatula into the circular insets, and I had to use my fingers to help after the spatula pried it up, but they all came out perfectly! They didn't leave chunks behind on the pan at all.

Whole wheat pancakes do not look good... the shapes, while accurate, are harder to see (at least with the recipe I tried).

If you are having trouble with the pancakes, try this recipe:(recipezaar recipe #106670). It's the one I have been using with the pan, and I've had no trouble with the pancakes using it.

It's very easy to use. Trick to flip the pancake: get one of those cute tiny mini spatula that is about the size of each pancake or even smaller so that it won't touch the adjacent one while flipping. Use it to lift the pancake slightly, then with help of a butter knife or spreader or little fork, flip it over...easy without problem. But the pattern shows well only one side of the pancakes, unless you use a batter that doesn't bubble too easily, then you sometimes could have a slight pattern on the other side after flipped.

When I received the pan and read the instructions, it said to bake it in the oven.Well, instead of the oven, I used it to cook on my electric range top and they came out perfectly. You do see the different images on the pancakes but be careful that the butter doesn't turn brown before you pour the batter into the mold otherwise it ruins the pictures because everything just looks brown on the pancakes.I give it 5 stars because it's a great pan to use and it makes the perfect size pancake every time.Cleaning it is a snap.

For best results I found that putting the batter in clockwise or counter-clockwise and flipping in same order produces a lovely golden result... We bought several styles and they were such hits that we ended up sending a couple home with our guests.Highly recommend.

I knew this would make the perfect gift for a family member that traditionally eats a pancake breakfast on Christmas morning. And it was! The big concern was the batter sticking to the pan but it was not a problem. GREAT GIFT! A great tradition. Thanks for making a quality product.

Outset QN77 Copper Colored Nonstick Grill Skillet with Removable Soft-Grip Handle

Outset QN77 Copper Colored Nonstick Grill Skillet with Removable Soft-Grip HandleThe surface is truly non-stick and that is impressive considering I use it on the grill. It is very nice to cook something like onions or shrimp on the grill and not have them fall thru the grates. The removable handle is great as I have a small grill and could not cover a pan with a handle.I highly recommend this.

I got this pan for my dad for father's day, and he loves it!It works better than a similar grill tray he has, cooks evenly, and it's also a breeze to clean. The handle is a room saving device that easily attaches/detaches from the pan with hooks similar to peg board clips for flexible transfers. The pan is also large enough to hold veggies or fish for a group of four to six.I recommend this product.

This is NOT a copper skillet, it is copper colored. I would guess it is made from steel, you can check this out using a magnet (copper is a non-magnetic metal). Do like the nonstick finish however.

T-fal A8070962 Specialty Nonstick Dishwasher Safe 13.5-Inch Giant Family Fry Pan / Saute Pan Cookware, BlackSeriously, these are the best LARGE non-stick pans. The red dot lets you know when it is hot enough to cook. Remember, overheating makes any non-stick pan lose the non-stick quality, use the dot! The extra handle is needed because these are family size, but with it they are easy to lift. I just bought three more, the one I found in my local store three years ago finally got overheated (my wife) cooking sausages. Why three? I am afraid they will stop making them in a couple of years when I ruin the next one.

A decent nonstick pan. Been using it for about 5 months and have a couple of tiny marks where the coating flaked off after I way over-heated the pans, other than that it has worked great.

The size of the pan is absolutely awesome for stir fry and/or cooking large quantities. 13.5" gives you roughly double the square area as 10-inch pan (143 square inches vs. 78). The pan and handles have are also solid and have been very durable.

This pan works very well. I'd hate to pay more than this (and you certainly can when you are looking for induction compatible cookware) for a non-stick. No matter how well made, the non-stick will wear off in a few years.

Smart money, no disappointment.

I have the Calphalon, Cuisinart green gourmet and American Kitchen 8" skillets. The American Kitchen is by far the best nonstick.

The pan seemed well-made.It comes with elaborate instructions, e.g., "don't cook on higher than medium" and "don't use non-stick sprays," which we arefollowing (to the extent we can remember them all), but still certain foods stick, like scrambled eggs -the main thing most people buy a pan like this to cook, I'm guessing. We're still working on how to use this best, but do like that it is supposedly better for our family. The stuck on eggs come off ok if you are gentle about it.But people expecting a perfect non-stick experience may be disappointed.

Updating this, this pan should only be purchased by people who don't cook eggs for breakfast, and who like to spend a lot of time cleaning and trying to safely scrape pans with soft implements. I was given a circulon pan by a sympathetic family member who didn't want to see me hit somebody with this pan in a fit of rage. The circulon pan, also with care instructions, works beautifully.

West Bend 79586 6-Quart Capacity Electric Wok

West Bend 79586 6-Quart Capacity Electric WokOnly recently did I start cooking Asian food, after a co-worker had brought in some food that she had made. She told me how to make the food, and after trying it myself, I realized how EASY it is. Anyway... about the Wok... I bought it about a month ago at a local kitchen supply store, and have been really happy with it. It heats up instantly, doesnt stick, etc.

The reason I left out 1 star is because of a bad design. It's very hard to hold on to the handles when taking the food out of the Wok. They should have implemented one big handle, like on a pan. Secondly, their temperature control is sort of hidden under the wok, makes it a BIT hard to change the temperature... but it's not a big problem.

Conclusion: If you want a great electric wok, for the price, this is defenitely a great one. I have no others that I've used before, but compared to any of my other pans/pots, anything... this is hands down the best for the buck :)

I finally had to replace my West Bend Electic Wok after 25 hard years of use.The wok still worked but the electric cord gave out.I could replace the cord for about $20 but I got to looking at what was a beautiful red wok and it was now faded and the interior was beginning to stick.I figured they may have made a few improvements in that time, so opted to by a new one.It was well worth it.Heats up much faster, cools down quicker, larger cooking surface.Since I have a pantry, it stored in the same space as before.I like the metal lid.It is lighter than my first one so I can lift it with one hand and spoon contents out with the other. The only problem I have is seeing the temperature gauge because of the electrical outlet location in my kitchen. The gauge ends up on the left, under the handle.
