Nordic Ware Silver Dollar Waffle Griddle

Nordic Ware Silver Dollar Waffle Griddle9.20.2009 UPDATE

I am so surprised that this product only has 3 stars.I use this 2-3 times a month...I make 1 cup of gluten free mix which puts out 28-30 baby waffles...then I freeze them on a baking sheet, once frozen I then bag them. This process of freezing helps them not to stick to each other.

Every morning my daughter wakes up saying "waffles, waffles" she's 2.I put 4 in the cold toaster oven set it on broil...ready in2-3 minutes. When I make the batter I add a tablespoon of honey, maple or agave to the batter...gives the waffles a tiny taste of sweetness. They are then ready for munching...I do not add additional syrup...to messy for a 2 year old.She loves them this way.

One more thing I no longer oil the waffle pan this makes them browner & crispier...yes only one side gets the toasty color the other side is lightly toasted. For presentation I always lay the dark side up.I love this pan!

Original Review:

My baby girl loves these little waffles.I think she was getting bored w/pancakes...I use a gluten-free mix from Whole Foods by 365, their delicious...I love them too.Make sure the pan gets nice & hot (otherwise the batter does not get a nice toasty color to it), I lightly oil each little griddle & they come out perfect. Buy some nice maple syrup & organic butter...Yum. Enjoy.

Got this for my birthday from my mom (it had been in my wish list for while) and I am not disappointed. I have three little boys who love pancakes and I don't have room for a large waffle iron in my kitchen. I tried this out (using the recipe included with the pan) and they were delicious and easy.

My tips for success: butter or oil the pan before you put the mix in and only cook 4-5 at a time (otherwise I had trouble flipping them fast enough--or else I need to turn it down some more!) Sprays don't work as well (same as any other non-stick surface--they leave residue and buildup on the Teflon); oil with a basting brush is better. You use a fork to flip them and it's actually not too hard to flip them back into the little holes.

Bottom line: Great purchase. Fun. Tasty waffles. Worth the money! :)

P.S. Here is the recipe in case you misplaced it. I think that they work best with the recipe that came with it.

Nordic Ware Silver Dollar Waffle Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup flour

½ tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. sugar

¾ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

1 egg

1 cup buttermilk

1 Tbsp. melted butter

Directions

Preheat pan over medium heat and season with butter or oil. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, sugar, baking powder and salt; set aside. Beat egg until light and fluffy. Add egg, buttermilk and butter to dry mixture; mix until blended. Spoon about 2 Tbsp. butter into each cavity, and cook until pancakes bubble. Turn each pancake over and continue cooking until pancakes are a light golden brown.

I was excited about this product and it seemed like such a good idea!I love waffles, but hate the bulk of and inability to easily clean a waffle maker. So this seemed like a perfect compromise. But for me, it just didn't work.I used vegetable oil to grease the pannot non stick spray since it seems to get "gunky" on non-stick surfaces, and then put my batter in.It scorched quite quickly, even though it was only on medium heat, and then they stuck to the pan when I tried to turn them over to cook the other side.Trying to turn them over was a bit awkward, too. I don't know if my experience was different since we have an electric flat-surface range? Perhaps cooking on a gas stove is different? But I was not happy with how it cooked or the ease of use.I guess I'll have to drag out the wafflemaker...

I LOVE Nordicware's products and was quite excited when I found this pan marked down at my local giant store. However, don't order this pan thinking that voila! You're going to get up and have a great time making waffles. Not so!This boy takes some serious practice to get them right. The instructions do not say at all if it needs oiled or not and since the finish is nonstick, you cannot spray it with cooking spray or it will peel off.So, my first batch, thinking that it might be the same coating they use for Williams Sonoma, was made without using any nonstick product.Well, I had waffle goo everywhere imaginable and crumbled up waffles. So, I dug it out, cleaned it, and tried again. (The ONLY thing that will clean this too, by the way, is a very soft, non-scratching bottle brush. You just wouldn't believe all the nooks and crannies this guy has!) This time I used butter in the waffle sections before I put in the batter.Guess what?It really works well! They flip out easily and you can actually turn them over without making a messy disaster. The directions indicate that you need to use a plastic fork to flip the waffles and believe me, that's the ONLY thing that works! They really should include that with this product it would definitely make life easier!Recommend, but be sure you use a good waffle recipe and butter in the compartments!

We've had this waffle pan since Christmas and have used it maybe 10 times, so I can now say that it's performance has been consistent and very good.I've used at least three different recipes in it, and they've all worked fine in terms of not sticking (more on that below), but we really like the flavor of the buttermilk recipe that came with the pan so I mostly make it.Specifics that might help:

1) I use this pan on a gas stove. When I get out the bowl to start the recipe, I put the pan on medium to heat.I think it cooks best if given a 8-10 minute heat-up period.

2) Based on another review here, I melt butter (real, of course) in a small pan next to the waffle pan and use a silicone pastry brush to brush melted butter into each waffle-spot before adding the batter. This not only works great (along with the non-stick of the pan itself) to release waffles, but tastes really good.We don't add any butter on top of the waffles because they already have a lovely browned-butter flavor.

3) I used a slightly-heaped tablespoon measure to put batter into each well.

4) Cook them until they look fairly dry on top, then use a small non-metal spatula or fork to flip them over.Press slightly on them to indent the 2nd side down into the waffle holes.

5) I use a plastic-bristle brush designed for cleaning baby bottles to clean the pan.I put a little dish soap onto it and scrub away. It's gentle enough that it doesn't scratch the non-stick surface, and the thing cleans VERY easily and quickly.

OVERALL: Compared to traditional waffle irons, easy clean-up is a huge part of the appeal.I used to almost never make waffles due to gooey and crispy bits of batter ending up everywhere, and a resulting sticky appliance. This one is so easy that I've used it ~10 times in five months.Plus, the waffles are really cute. The first side to cook gets nice and crispy and looks good; the other doesn't look as good; but that's true for any food item that gets flipped.I store it wrapped in a small towel to keep other pans from scratching its surface because I really like it and want it to last for years. With good treatment, it certainly seems like it will.

Rachael Ray Porcelain Enamel II Nonstick 12-1/2-Inch Skillet

Rachael Ray Porcelain Enamel II Nonstick 12-1/2-Inch Skillet, Blue GradientI love this pan! I've been cooking for a living for more than 25 years and this is one of the best teflon pans I've ever used. Nice heavy aluminum, not one that feels like it was made out of a pop can. Handle feels very strong and is comfortable to grip. Made my husband fried eggs without using any grease and the eggs came out perfect. You taste the eggs not the grease. It came clean with just a quick wipe. The enamel on the outside is beautiful, shading from light to deep blue. I am looking forward to getting more of this cookware.

Much better than expected. This is wonderful for all the frying we do!Love it and will definitely buy it again if it holds up over time.

I hardly ever do reviews on Amazon, but I'm doing this to save you the disappointment I have experienced.

I got this skillet in December 2011 (not through Amazon).I used the skillet with extreme caution so as not to damage the inside.I have used these types of skillets as long as they have been made and until now got years of service out of them.I NEVER put it or for that matter any metal skillet or pan in the dishwasher or used a metal utensil in it.After no more than 6 uses, the inside coating started peeling out in chunks up to 1 inch.

I contacted the company and was told I had to ship it to them (me paying for the shipping). They would then review the product and determine then if they would replace or if it had not been taken care of properly.I was also told it could take up to 12 weeks before I may receive a replacement. So I'm without a big skillet for that long--I only have 1 12-1/2 inch skillet.Would they actually replace?Who knows...I have spent all the money that I ever will on Rachel Ray products. No Rachel Ray for me and I would highly recommend you purchase something besides Rachel Ray, unless you like to gamble or wish to make an investment in the product (initial purchase, shipping fees to return and maybe get a replacement and be without a skillet while they decide if they will replace it).

Wanted this set...but when I saw the saute pan I couldnt resisit.I thought that the pan would have come with a top, but I guess I have to wait for the full set.Otherwise I love the color, this one is a two toned blue, some are just plain ole blue so it gives it a bit more of a design instead of boring blue. The pan is a bit heavy, but my hands arent that great due to sickness but I manage.Pan is great, non-stick, none of the color fading or washing off.Would buy other sets, if she came out with a lightweight set I would love it also.

Want Rachael Ray Porcelain Enamel II Nonstick 12-1/2-Inch Skillet Discount?

First I would say this pan is a pan. It is coated with teflon and works wonders. It is a bit oversized compared to the standard 12 in pan and makes me that much happier.

I like the high sides and makes it that much easier to cook with. The teflon seems very durable and should last a long time.

The rivets are not coated and things can accumulate around them. Just clean around the rivets and you should be fine.

The paint job on this looks awesome...a two tone color that really looks nice...unless you got the one I did. I got one with a nick in it and someone had the nerve to color over it with a blue marker.

I have used this numerous times so far. It works great and as described. I can see the bottom wearing off first, then maybe the teflon over normal or high use.

With the price and happiness it has brought me so far, I would recommend it to all!

UPDATE 1/30/13: I would say that though this pan is still a nice pan, it doesn't seem to hold well with use. The Teflon already has scratches in it where other brands I use do not. It seems that the Teflon isn't as thick as others that I have. I would say long term, it may not hold up as long as I would have expected.

we are really gung-ho for American made products & this treasure is not only made in USA but it is a top quality pan. It cooks evenly and the teflon coating appears to be of very good quality. We're thinking of buying another just like it!

This pan works very well. I'd hate to pay more than this (and you certainly can when you are looking for induction compatible cookware) for a non-stick. No matter how well made, the non-stick will wear off in a few years.

Smart money, no disappointment.

I have the Calphalon, Cuisinart green gourmet and American Kitchen 8" skillets. The American Kitchen is by far the best nonstick.

The pan seemed well-made.It comes with elaborate instructions, e.g., "don't cook on higher than medium" and "don't use non-stick sprays," which we arefollowing (to the extent we can remember them all), but still certain foods stick, like scrambled eggs -the main thing most people buy a pan like this to cook, I'm guessing. We're still working on how to use this best, but do like that it is supposedly better for our family. The stuck on eggs come off ok if you are gentle about it.But people expecting a perfect non-stick experience may be disappointed.

Updating this, this pan should only be purchased by people who don't cook eggs for breakfast, and who like to spend a lot of time cleaning and trying to safely scrape pans with soft implements. I was given a circulon pan by a sympathetic family member who didn't want to see me hit somebody with this pan in a fit of rage. The circulon pan, also with care instructions, works beautifully.

Cuisinox - Elite Sauce Pan

Cuisinox Elite 3 Quart Covered SaucepanI own a number of All Clad pieces, and was planning to buy this size saucepan from All Clad, but in reading reviews of tri-clad cookware, I came across Cuisinox Elite reviews that seemed interesting. I decided to buy this pot and see how it stacked up. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It appears to have the quality of All Clad at a significantly lower price. It is well finished, the lid has a nice fit, and the pot is substantial.I just finished my first sauce in it, and I am even more impressed. It has great heat distribution, meaning that I was able to prepare a very thick, creamy sauce with no sticking to sides or bottom. I strongly prefer stainless to non-stick, for a number of reasons, and this is quality stainless. I believe it is equal to All Clad in overall finish and cooking qualities--and for a lot less money. I love my All Clad, but I am planning to buy my next piece of cookware from Cuisinox.

NordicWare 15040 Cast Aluminum Stovetop Belgium Waffle Iron

NordicWare 15040 Cast Aluminum Stovetop Belgium Waffle IronWow!Magnificent waffles (and I've tasted my share) first time off the volley. How, you may ask, those 1-2 star reviewers?Oil the waffler lightly before the pre-heat.They're right, there is NO such thing as a completely stick-free waffler out there. And for those of you in love with teflon, good luck achieving the light crisp crunch exterior that yields to a light fluffy interior possible with this waffler.Waffle afficionados told me I had to find an old non-teflon waffler on e-bay or at a flea market.Imagine my surprise to run into this at a nearby kitchen supply store.Good thing I had not read the Amazon reviews, I might have been scared off.So make their suggested batter, lightly oil, pre-heat, pour batter and 3 minutes later--the BEST waffles out there.Merci, NordicWare.

I purchased this waffle iron four years ago.

And, I went through quite a few batches of waffle batter until I could heat the iron on the stove properly.

But, after a while I was making the tastiest waffles on the block.

Once I got the hang of using this waffler, I got rid of my electric

waffle iron!

I end with one word of advice. Please be sure to grease this waffle iron before you pour the batter on the grids.

The new Nordic Belgium Wafflers are not the same high quality as previous models. Previous models include a temperature gauge and bake higher quality waffles. The new waffler does not hold the waffles to the outside surface until baked and the waffles end out collapsed and heavy. I used the older model at the same time with the same batter at similar temperatures and the waffles from the older model were light and crisp.

I have baked waffles in this pan for about 30 years. It still bakes the biggest most beautiful Belgian waffles in the world in four minutes! I am looking for a second one so I can make two at a time. Preheat about 2 minutes on each side. Flip the griddle quickly after pouring batter onto the hottest side. Bake 2 minutes on each side. Mine has a temperature gauge in the handle, which I love. I am trying to find that model, but it may not exist any more.

Bialetti 10-Inch Aeternum Easy Saute Pan, Purple

Bialetti 10-Inch Aeternum Easy Saute Pan, PurpleI'm beginning to wonder if non-teflon non-stick pans just have a lifespan of two months. I previously ordered an eco-friendly nonstick pan from Ozetti, and it was awesome for two months and then everything started to stick. I thought this might be because my husband likes to dredge everything in flour before he cooks it, so I bought him a wok and bought myself this purple Bialetti pan and forbade him to use it. For the first two months it was perfection--I cooked eggs, tofu, fish, scallops, pancakes, and everything came out perfectly cooked, didn't stick, and cleanup was a breeze. And then, just at the two-month mark, it started staining and sticking. I have to pour a LOT of oil in now to flip pancakes without having them come apart because they're stuck to the pan.

This skillet is a lot lighter than the one by a different name that I already owned; It really does look like a skillet instead of a saute pan. It has worked out ok so far

Wilton Armetale Gourmet Grillware

Wilton Armetale Gourmet Grillware Fry Pan, Round, 8-Inch ()I've always admired the Wilton Armetale products when I would see them in stores. They are very attractive so I was excited to get this griddle and try it out.

Upon receiving it, I first did a little research on the types of metal used in the production of this piece. I was a little concerned with the use of aluminum which I try to avoid for health concerns. I decided to try it out despite my concerns because I figured this would be used occasionally and not daily.

It fit right on 2 of my burners. I made a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches using plenty of butter. They stuck horribly to the griddle. It was quite a job to remove the stuck on food. This was just the bread itself sticking too and not cheese which is odd, I've never had a problem with bread sticking to my pans, especially since I used butter. I also tried making sautéed onions and peppers with plenty of oil. Again, horrible sticking and cleanup was a bear.

I've decided between the use of aluminum in the product and the sticking that I'm going to use this as a large and very pretty trivet and tray. I've found it nice to place on the table and set dishes on. I also sit it on my counter and place a lit candle on it.

Pricey for just a tray or trivet but it is quite attractive. I recommend using an old-fashioned cast iron griddle. You can't beat them.

()Saw this on Vine, and thought I'd get it to replace/supplement the workhorse griddle I've been using for about 10 years now. It turns out this is a bit smaller than your standard pancake-type griddle--about an inch or two narrower and shorter. That meant it didn't quite lay right on our cooktop--the burners were just about at the edge of each end instead of comfortably in the middle.

Don't get me wrong--this griddle looks a thousand times better than my old workhorse with its ugly rubber-coated handles. But, as I had suspected, those ugly handles serve a very important purpose: they make it possible to handle the griddle without searing your flesh off or using a potholder. I saw firsthand why this matters. To get some leverage while flipping the pancakes, I wanted to hold the griddle steady. While trying to flip, I knocked the griddle off its perch so that the near end--the one I was holding with the pothodler--was directly over the exposed flame of the gas burner. Ouch.

It turns out that this griddle is considerably stickier than my old workhorse, with pancakes, eggs, and butter all sticking to the surface--the latter despite two washings. So while I started out with high hopes for this griddle, it's just not functional as an everyday piece of cookware.

I saw that another user uses their griddle on this grill, and I might save this for that use, since it is definitely sized right. But for regular pancakes in the kitchen, I'm sticking with my old workhorse.

We've had this Grill Tray for 5 years and it is one of the most used dishes in our kitchen. We received it as a wedding gift and its simple utilitarian design became an instant go-to cookware and serving tray. They should build tanks out of this stuff because it is extremely durable. If you are looking for an attractive serving dish that you can cook on, look no further. It is similar to cast iron but is more attractive, does not retain oils and flavors after washing, doesn't rust, and is a slightly lighter in weight. It does not mark or stain so it will always look like new.It would make the perfect gift for any cook or grill enthusiast but be sure to buy yourself one while your at it.

The grill cooks fine, but stains easily.Initially I used it to heat tortillas and make quesadillas.Wherever something burned, there are spots that cannot be removed by soaking or scrubbing with brillo pads.Although the grill is still usable, it is not presentable and I cannot take it from stove to table-top as the item description suggested.

...pots and pans, but the spatula and stuff that comes with it are cheapy. One handle on the large pot gets hot when I am cooking (which is weird because the other side is fine to touch) and there is one lid that the top gets hot on (but others are fine). Weird but other than that great set! If you remember to use pot holders then it will be fine :) They do heat evenly and do not scratch easily. Overall good product!

Scanpan IQ Fry Pan

Scanpan IQ 12.5-Inch Fry Pan ()This pan has been very very good. It is very well constructed and has an even heat inductance. It's heavy, but has a very comfortable handle and the non-stick surface has been the best I've ever used. This is certainly the most expensive pan I've ever owned, so I cannot comment on its performance next to other pans in it's price range, but it FAR out performs my previous fry pan (a $50 Calphalon pan from Target). In the end, my only real concern is the price. So far, I really do feel it's been worth it, but only time will tell. If the pan holds up well under extended use then it will prove to be a wonderful product worth the high price.

()I like this fry pan, but I have a small complaint. The instructions that come with this pan, tell you not to use non-stick spray. Well, that was a mistake. This was tried twice, both times the food stuck and left small food burns on the pan. Therefore there was a small burn taste one of the times. However the clean up was great, but it just is not the non-stick miracle they say it is.

I do like the way the pan fits the stove top. It seems to be perfect for the ceramic stove top. I do not love this stove top, but it is what I have right now, and this pan seems to balance and sit perfectly on the stove top. Which of course means even heat.

Buy Scanpan IQ Fry Pan Now

()I've owned a few Scanpan pans over the years.I also recently purchased a new ceramic glass top range and have slowly been replacing my cookware.Scanpan makes some of the best, long-lasting pans on the market. The IQ 10.25-inch fry pan is no different.

Quality and craftsmanship is something that Scanpan takes seriously. The pan is Pfoa-free and while it's safe for metal utensils, I've never used them on my non-stick skillets.I always use silicon or plastic utensils and I always hand wash them.Even though they almost always say dishwasher safe I just never like putting expensive items like this in the dishwasher. If you keep care of it, the pan will last a long time. With that said, the pan has gotten a bunch of use and has cooked all types of food.It has held up considerably well. It's not easily scratched and surface (inside and outside) maintains its finish.

I've not had any problems with food sticking in this pan or any other Scanpan that I've owned.Cooks evenly and works on smooth glass top surfaces (as well as most other cooking surfaces).Clean up is a snap.

The fry pan is oven safe up to 500 degrees.I find the weight of this particular pan to be of medium weight.Certainly not heavy, but not the lightest I've ever held.On the lighter end, somewhere in the middle.Of course, something of this quality is bound to have some weight to it, but it's still easy to handle and use.My only gripe with Scanpan are the sizes of some of their pans.At 10.25-inch, you'll likely find that most of your existing lids are not going to work.

()This has got to be the nicest non-stick surface I've ever used. I am not a master chef by any means. I like a lot of things extra well done and sometimes I accidentally burn stuff and have to scrub the charred food from my pans. The non-stick surface is like something that arrived from another planet. I can practically use one pass of a paper towel and get all the crud out of the pan. Unlike other non-stick surfaces, it's fairly easy to brown your food without adding a ton of butter. It's the only non-stick cookware I've ever used that advertises that the use of metal utensils is fine. We don't have an induction stove, so I cannot review that functionality but I've been very impressed with this light weight, but very durable pan. My other pans' lids fit this one perfectly as well. A fine piece of cookware for any kitchen.

()You've heard the old saying "you get what you pay for" and in this case it is true! This one pan runs what I've paid for boxed sets of non-stick cookware, and I've never gotten the results from the boxed sets that I have received from this pan.

The 10.25" pan itself is quite hefty weighing in at almost 2-1/2 pounds (That's what my 8" cast iron pan weighs!) It is nicely designed with a comfortable handle and balances well on my gas stove top grates. However, what most impresses me most is the even cooking. I purposefully overcrowded the pan to see how it would cook. Everything browned and cooked evenly. I didn't have to move the contents around from cool side to hot side, as there wasn't any!

Clean-up was a breeze as the meat didn't stick. Those food particles that were left behind let loose with just a swipe from the dishcloth. The bottom of the pan didn't pick up any marring from usage (as my boxed sets did), and even with continual usage, I've had no problem keeping this pan looking pristine.

This pan is a cooks dream come true!

Tramontina Gourmet Porcelain Enamel Black Cherry Fry Pan

Tramontina Gourmet Porcelain Enamel Black Cherry Fry PanThe exterior coating wore off within 3 days on another piece I bought from this set. Because of this issue, I returned this pot, unused and in its original packaging within a week of purchase.

I was charged $40 to return the unused set, plus the original defective pan.

My only recommendation for this pan and Chefs Tools is to avoid them both.

This was my second purchase of a Tramontina pan, it is great. You will enjoy cooking in this pan. Will purchase more of this brand

Cooks Standard NC-00236 12-Inch Ply Clad Stainless Steel Fry Pan, Multi

Cooks Standard NC-00236 12-Inch Ply Clad Stainless Steel Fry Pan, MultiI researched extensively before I purchased and demanded tri clad up the sides. Researched how to use to cook meat: set pan on burner to get the sides hot, then add 1-2 tbl oil, then add food and move pan a little to move the food around until the meat gets a glaze on the exterior and no longer wants to stick. Cover with a lid and cook meat until done on lower heat and remove from pan. Then add a cup or two of broth, a splash of wine, and 1-2 tbl of cornstarach and stir. Makes the worlds quickest gravy. I have read you can only do this process with a stainless pan.New technique for me and makes your meat taste gourmet.I don't mind if the pan discolors on the bottom. I am too busy to care. From the reviews I've read, every pan on the planet does that and some people complain about it. My mom scrubs hers with barkeepers friend. Would have been nice if it had a lid. Works ok to use and ill-fitting lid from another pan.Very happy.

Wash prior to using to remove the substance that was put on the pan for protection. I really like this pan. It heats evenly and cleans up wonderfully. The pan is substantial in thickness and the handle is perfect. It does not get hot and it is easy to hold. I would recommend this pan.

I have been purchasing new stainless cookware, one item at a time, for several months... a by-product of taking classes toward a non-professional culinary certificate. I have bought all tri-clad products from a few different manufacturers based on reviews, but I've stuck to the name-brands that I knew and spent a lot of money. Then, just before Christmas, this one went on sale and I thought the price was good enough, and reviews enthusiastic enough, to take a chance... so I did. I couldn't be happier! It is a very solid skillet, with a nice, flat bottom, and it heats very evenly. It cooks better than my 10" tri-clad skillet that cost about twice as much. It simply sautés beautifully! I'm going to look further at this line as I buy other pans.
