Universal Housewares Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron 6 1/2 Inch Skillet

Universal Housewares Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron 6 1/2 Inch SkilletUnfortunately this item was returned due to the poor workmanship. I debated whether to keep it or not since it is only around $10 with free shipping piggybacked with another item I ordered, but the flaws were just too obvious to ignore, and I know I will not feel good about using it. There were many sharp unfinished edges from the casting and a few rusty patches on the cooking surfaces as well. The posted picture with this item does not seem to adequately show its true design and dimensions. On the top of the list, the handle is also annoyingly too short, making it really awkward to use. A better made and designed version is available CostPlus for 5.99 at their retail store.

I was hoping for a pan in which I could make an over-easy egg for breakfast but the bottom of the pan is so rough that when you remove the egg, there are small black pieces on the egg.I didn't want to get my iron for the day by eating fragments from a cast iron pan. I have seasoned the pan over and over and nothing changes.

When I ordered this product I didn't realize how small this is.I can only scramble about one egg on it.However, for the price you can't beat a real cast iron pan.I use this almost daily and so far there is no sign of any wear and tear on it.

I love cast iron pans. This one is great for one fried egg and some pieces of bacon. Really good quality item, you can never go wrong with a cast iron pan.

Cuisinart MCP-12N MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set

Cuisinart MCP-12N MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware SetNavigating the cookware maze? Boil it down to 3 key decisions:

1) Non-Stick vs. Anything Else

Non-Stick = Not dishwasher safe, average life of 2-8 years, some believe there are health concerns, a million color/style options. If you do decide to go nonstick, Anolon is arguably the best right now and at least a solid starting place to look.

Anything Else = Ultimately you go stainless. There's a bevy of reasons stainless is mandated in commercial world, sanitation and longevity being two. You can buy a stainless set that lasts, in theory, for life. Dishwasher safe. A lot of the latest offerings stick very little... and perform on par w/non-stick when using a light coating.

Face it, you buy non-stick out of laziness. Well, I'd rather my dishwasher clean off the "stick" than my hand have to clean off the "non-stick".

2) Ok, so I'm going stainless! What now?

Once again you have two choices... All Clad brand or Cuisinart brand. Anything else is at best "close", or worse "nowhere near as good". These are the two top brands, and are what you'll typically find in people's homes who cook for a living.

All Clad is an excellent choice, but ultimately you pay a little more and get fewer "nice touches" like lids and design elements. Some claim All Clad is harder to clean up as well. While I don't advocate letting a small price difference sway you on something that will last decades, in this case you really get a slightly better product with Cuisinart. If you fancy a particular offering from All Clad though, you won't regret your choice.

3) OK, so you've sold me on Cuisinart. What should I choose?

You've found this listing so you're in the right place. There are three tiers:

MultiClad Pro Widest selection, utility in mind. The pro line you buy to use for a generation. Has about every pot/pan permutation you can think of available.

MultiClad Unlimited Like MultiClad Pro but with anodized finish that I like better. Unfortunately has fewer options (e.g. only a 2 & 4 quart saucepan). Ultimately this is a tool so I go with the more varied pro line. The Pro has stood the test of time and is clearly the more popular choice for a reason. (**Update I think I've found why Unlimited is less popular on cuisinart's site it appears the anodized unlimited dose not work on induction whereas pro does. Pro works on induction, halogen, glass ceramic, gas, and electric which covers everything.**)

Chef's classic Tier below Unlimited. Don't be tempted, the price difference isn't that great.

Note that back in the day there was copper clad, but that's basically a gimmick. Copper heats quickly, but there isn't enough on the pan to make a functional difference so you'd only buy them because they are prettier on the outside. (They aren't offered anymore so you won't be tempted.)

Other points:

*Price: Currently as of 10/2012 it's around $275. (**Update 11/2012 Looks like Amazon is pricing this cheap for the holidays, currently at $243. That's the same price as the older MCP-12 and a pretty good deal. Normally I would expect to see this price at around $260.**)

*If you haven't heard of it, buy some "barkeeper's friend". Even the cookware manufacturers recommend it. This stuff will fix virtually anything that you can't otherwise clean away. (Only need to use it when all else fails.)

Bar Keepers Friend® Cleanser & Polish: 12 OZ

*If you're still wavering, check out the reviews on the previous version of this set (MCP-12). At time of this writing it was 572 reviews and averaged 4.5 stars. A ton of people own this set and are happy with it. That means you are very likely to be happy too. Here's a link to the previous model where you can read reviews to your heart's content:

Cuisinart MCP-12 MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set

*Differences between the older MCP-12 and this set MCP-12N:

About $15 bucks as of 10/2012

Handle Design

(Yep that's about it)

*If this is all the pots/pans you'll ever need and you want to save a few bucks, I'd suggest watching the MCP-12 set for a deal as it phases out. If you have dreams of adding to this set over the coming years then you're going to have to get the MCP-12N as you don't know how much longer the MCP-12 model offerings will be available and you'd wind up with a mismatched set.

*Cooking an egg on stainless is still a pain... you just can't beat non-stick for that. Go buy a single non-stick skillet if you just have to have that. I did.

***---Update 11/22/12 based on the 18/10 question I keep getting---***

I keep seeing comments and questions re: "Is this stainless really 18/10?" and "Rumor has it they went cheap and this is no longer 18/10 stainless". Allow me to address in a single reply here...

1) Yes these are 18/10. Amazon even updated their description to say so now. You can also call Cuisinart to be 100% sure (they are usually very customer friendly).

2) That being said, realize that there are 3 components. The pans are "clad" pans. First you have the outer stainless, then the middle aluminum core (for heat distribution), and then the interior stainless. Realize that the outer stainless layer is NOT 18/10. Nor should it be. This is because that would make the pans unsuitable for induction ranges. That outer stainless is more likely to be 18/0 ("magnetizeable" stainless), but I'm not exactly sure what it is and can only guess.

3) This isn't something manufacturers do to save money. Pure 18/10 pans would suck and not heat evenly. It's just something that they have to do because of the laws of physics. Aluminum in the core layer for heat distribution and non-18/10 on the outer layer for induction ranges. All-Clad does it the same way and shows such illustration on their site.

4) I think that's the reason this weird rumor is circulating about various cookware not being 18/10. All the makers that have been making their gear 18/10 are still doing so. It's just that the outer layer isn't 18/10... only the inner layer, handles, lids, etc. The 18/0 is good stainless, it just has different physical properties.

5) Last, just in case anyone is bored enough to care about the metallurgy: In 18/10 the 18 = the % chromium, the 10 is the % nickel.18/10 is "Austenitic" or 304 grade stainless. If a magnet sticks to your pan there's a layer somewhere that is not 18/10 nor aluminum (neither are magnetic). In 18/0 stainless it's 430 grade, the chromium still provides strength and corrosion resistance but the nickel is swapped out making the alloy magnetic. 18/0 is cheaper, and the absence of nickel makes the steel alloy more susceptible to pitting. That's the tradeoff. Otherwise the pan would not work on an induction range since it would not be magnetic. (More than even I wanted to know, but wikipedia is so addicting.)

Maybe that helps.

***---End of 11/22/12 Update based on the 18/10 question I keep getting---***

I ordered this set due to a great deal that was offered a few weeks back, making the set more affordable than the older model. This model, MCP-12N is the new version (with improved handle shaping and placement-I contacted Cuisinart to ask about the difference) of the MCP-12.I've always had cheap model Revereware, or bought scratch and dent pans from stores. This is the first nice set of cookware I've ever purchased.I was skeptical because I read ALL reviews on the older model. There were some negative ones, and I was leary. While affordable, they are still priced higher than what I'm used to buying. Oh-about price; I checked several places and Amazon's price has yet to be beat.

I was provided an estimated delivery date between the first and second week of November. Then Amazon sent me an email last week stating the pots would be available sooner. They arrived this past Monday, and I LOVE them!I've only cooked 3 meals so far, but I've used quite a bit of the pots to do so.The lids are awesome--light, easy to hold because the handle bends high (your knuckles don't touch the hot lid), and they seal wonderfully while cooking.I have a smooth-top stove and these are working great. On other reviews from the older model, I saw complaints about sticking but I have not had that problem.I have cooked eggs, sausage, veggies, I've steamed veggies in the steamer insert...etc.I have experienced no problems, and only use a light spray of olive or canola spray. I have no spots, no stains, no discoloration so far.I did grab barkeepers friend from the store (sorry Amazon, but that stuff is much cheaper in the stores than online) based on other review suggestions but I don't need it yet. These are so easy to clean.

The construction of this cookware is wonderful. They are sturdy, the handles are very sturdy (and the long handles really do stay cool on the stove top, but the "helper" handles get hot if you are boiling/steaming with a lid on). They are heavy enough to show their great construction and material, but not too heavy to handle and move between stove, sink, cabinets, etc.I highly recommend this set especially if you are looking for a higher quality cookeware, but can't pay $600 over $1000 for some.I was fortunate to grab these at a lower price than currently showing today.I will definitely purchase add on cookware from the Multi-Clad Pro line to add to my collection as I need. I see there are nice multi-use pots/pans from this line and I can't wait to build my set.The set in this offer is wonderful and has everything you need.

Pros:

+Really good looking (I greatly prefer the brushed exterior over polished)

+Set includes a lid that will fit each pan (not all at the same time, though)

+Curved lip for easy pouring

+Includes exactly the pieces I'd want

+Overall build quality rivals that of sets costing 2x the price or more

+Will probably last a lifetime

Cons:

-Does take a bit of work to get used to and maintain (proper preheating and use of oil as well as a bit more elbow grease to clean over non-stick)

-Questionable warranty (representative placed strong emphasis on the word "LIMITED" before "Lifetime", customer pays shipping BOTH WAYS).

After doing quite a bit of research, I decided to purchase this set of pans over any set I found locally or online. At 209 bucks, I really feel like this was a bargain (it's worth 300, realistically), especially with its excellent and beautiful construction. It's try-ply CLAD, which means three layers (Magnetized Stainless, Aluminum Core, 18/10 Stainless) are used throughout the pan, including up the side walls. Note that not all tri-ply cookware is like this; be careful of "try-ply BASE" cookware which only uses this setup on the bottom of the pan (they're easy to spot because they have a seam around the base of the pan).

I almost went for the Tramontina Tri-Ply Clad pieces you can pick up for a reasonable price at Wal-Mart, but decided against it as this set looks better visually and includes all the pieces I wanted; finding all the Tramontina pieces I'd need looked like quite a chore.

I didn't believe that I'd be able to cook on such low heat given the fact that my glass electric cooktop has taken so long to cook things in the past, but it really does work great. I pre-heat on level 5 (out of 10) until a water drop "skates" on the cooking surface, then back the heat off to 3.5 for a consistent cooking temp. Works great, seems to cook faster than my previous cookware at higher heat, PLUS no warping on any of these pans so they actually lay flat on my range.

If you understand the pros and cons of cooking in stainless and decide to go with it over non-stick, this set is the one to look at if you want something to last a lifetime.

The biggest negative for this set is the questionable support. Half of this assertion is based on other peoples' experiences I've read about, and half is for my own experience. I received my set with a dented lid (probably put in the package dented), and Cuisinart's support told me I'd be better off working with Amazon to resolve it since I'd have to pay shipping BOTH WAYS on a defective-out-of-the-box product. He also made sure to place emphasis on the word "Limited" in "Limited Lifetime Warranty", strongly implying that they reserved the right to not cover certain aspects of failure. Interesting, considering mine had arrived with a defective piece straight away. If you end up needing to use your warranty, be prepared to pay nearly as much in shipping (two ways) as a brand new replacement for the piece.

I loved these pans when they arrived. Great weight an good handle design. However, with regular use, they scratch and discolor so easily that I feel like I have to "baby" them.

This is not my first stainless steel cookware set, and I know how to use and care forthem. If you try to clean or polish these with bon ami or bar keepers, it causes scratching and swirling. Placing in the oven will leave a copper patina color. Of course, the guarantee does not cover staining, discoloration or scratching. I do not expect cooking pans to be showpieces, but I am disappointed that the finish is so delicate.

Want Cuisinart MCP-12N MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set Discount?

I was searching for a good Stainless steel cookware set and consider buying from Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart, Emeril, All-clad, Belqique etc., All-clad is expensive for similar sets and was out of my budget. This MultiClad Pro model from Cuisinart had great reviews for a reasonably priced set. It's probably tad bit higher as you can find similar sets for around $150 and sub-$200.

Finally I pulled the trigger on this one, but not in Amazon. I bought it from Buydig.com for substantially less ($213 after 10% off coupon during Black friday weekend sale). So, if you like this particular set, shop around. Because, I noticed Amazon is selling above-average prices compared to the market.

As far the product, this set is made of heavy, high quality steel. I couldn't test the durability yet. But, it looks to hold up for a long time to come, hopefully. As other reviewers pointed out, there is going to be discoloration and stuff, but as long as u are a little patient in cleaning these vessels as per the manufacturer's direction, these things will appear new for a long time. You can also use Barkeepers cleaning powder or something.

Thanks for the Amazon community for all the reviews. Even most other sites had 4.5 star average reviews for this set. The other sub-$200 sets, most of the reviews from different sites were below 4 stars and some reviews made me think its probably worth spending $50 more or so to get a better set than regretting later. So, hopefully I got the right one. They look soo great and has a good heft to it. 4 stars because I dont know the durability. Will probably update it after some time.

Lodge Logic L8DD3 Double Dutch Oven and Casserole with Skillet Cover, 5-Quart

Lodge Logic L8DD3 Double Dutch Oven and Casserole with Skillet Cover, 5-QuartI have been cooking with Lodge cast iron for about 7 years and own 8 pieces from their inventory. The Double Dutch Oven is my favorite Lodge cookware due to its versatility.

When using a dutch oven, I usually sear the meat first to add flavor. Usually, this requires searing the meat in several batches. The best part about the Double Dutch is that you can sear the meat in the big pot and in the lid simultaneously, thus reducing the time needed to brown the meat by half. Since the lid is then used for the braising step (after deglazing), you're not increasing the number of items to be cleaned later.

I like the lid so much that I often use it by itself for pan frying. Due to the smallish size (about 10 inches in diameter) and the inherent properties of cast iron, the lid can get incredibly hot if you want it to. Perfect for cooking a steak (it puts on a better crust vs my 12" Lodge skillet). I've even used it as a pie pan in a pinch. When properly seasoned, the lid also works great for cooking eggs without them sticking.A seasoned cast iron pan is the original nonstick and will outlast any synthetic-coated nonstick pan in the market (and without the toxic fumes).

When used as a Dutch Oven, it works like it should. It retains heat well and cooks evenly. There is very little steam that escapes. The smaller 5qt capacity (vs a 7qt Dutch Oven, which I use less now that I've got this one) is also better for cooking moderate amounts of food. Generally, you want little empty space when using a Dutch oven.

In response to the reviewer who has problems getting the lid off, I suggest the following. When setting the lid on the pot, don't align the handles of the two. This will allow you to remove the lid easily, without having to worry about injuries. I've owned another Lodge 5qt Dutch Oven

with a more traditional handle I don't miss that one at all...nor do I miss not having a standalone 10" skillet.

UPDATE (December 2010):

I've been using this thing for over two years now, several times per week. It is still my favorite, but ever more so. Here's one more thing that you can use this for: Baking super awesome bread that rivals anything you can get at your bakery. One of the secrets of making great rustic breads with a thick chewy/crunchy crust and great oven spring is to use a lot of steam for the first 10 minutes of baking. Bakeries use a steam-injected oven. For us at home, using a covered pot, such as this one, is the easiest way to replicate the effects of a steam oven. After shaping a boule, I place it on the lid, cover it with the main pot and let it proof (so the whole pot is upside down). When the dough is ready, I score it and place the covered pot on a preheated stone in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Then I remove the lid and let the top crust brown while the interior reaches the proper temperature. Depending on your oven, you might have to remove the bread from the lid halfway though cooking so the bottom doesn't burn I usually put it on a cool baking tray on a rack without a stone. It's a minor inconvenience, but it's easier than trying to steam an oven with boiling water, ices cubes, mister, etc. And the results can't be beat!

To preface, I'm trying really hard to be a "good cook" but don't have a lot of experience, and I can't justify spending thousands of dollars on a budding hobby. So, when it came to replacing my flaking non-stick cookware, I researched for months before deciding on a hybrid set of copper-core stainless and Lodge cast iron. I read dozens of reviews and was intimidated by the extra care required by cast iron (I'm a wash-and-wear type). But, Lodge is so cheap comparatively and still really respected as an industry standard, that it's hard to overlook.

I initially purchased the combo cooker, a 5qt dutch oven, and a variety of skillets. The cookers arrived in their Lodge packaging and were quite secure, but the skillets definitely were shipped loose. Fortunately they survived the jumbled journey fine, but I can see what other reviewers suffered with regards to skillets scraping each other or breaking out of their boxes they are only a few steps shy of being insufficiently packaged. Free shipping is a great offer though.

The pieces were just what I expected after having read the reviews heavy, uneven in color/preseasoning application, and rough like sandpaper. Several reviewers I read were upset by sticking of initial cooking attempts, specifically because of the cat's tongue-like feel of the basin surface (which Lodge's website says is a normal condition). Responders suggested a few home seasonings prior to cooking, but I was impatient and followed one piece of advice spefically: go to my local bulk goods store, buy ten pounds of ground beef, and cook it in my new cast iron. I ended up also getting four pounds of bacon for good measure, and spent three hours cooking batch after batch of ground beef and bacon in every piece I'd purchased.

The plan worked perfectly by the time I had finished cooking, drained the oil and scraps, rinsed the pieces with hot water, and towel dried, the insides of the skillets were smooth as satin. The beef fat had left a gray film that made the skillets look instantly "used", which is a benefit I'll have to get used to (not being able to polish them back to a "new" looking state). The bacon stained the cooking surface a bit worse in bacon-shaped shaddows, but I saved the bacon grease and used it for weeks to brush on the pans prior to use. I've cooked on the cast iron many times since (just dislodged a perfect batch of cornbread this morning), without any sticking during or after cooking. The several weeks of bacon grease was unhealthy, sure, but a great patina starter I now use a spray or a light brush with butter with no problems.

More Pros:

The skillets keep food hot for more than an hour, but yet are not dangerously hot to handle from the oven or stove. I'm going to purchase the handle pads now, but so far I've been using those old loom-woven potholders I made at summer camp with no added discomfort relative to other pans.

The skillets are so versatile! I heat them on the stove to melt butter, toss in some whole garlic cloves, pop in the oven to roast, and bring right to the table for a hot appetizer on toast. They have a vintage-y, industrial charm that allows them to mix and match smartly with existing serveware, and I love the stove-to-oven/broiler convenience.

Food cooked on cast iron really does taste better. I was skeptical because all food tastes good to me, but a few friends and I conducted a "Test Kitchen" on Aebleskiver pans, pitting a teflon against a cast iron. My friends' husbands consistently chose the cast iron-cooked pancake balls citing their crust and flavor to be preferable.

Lodge designed their lines efficiently. The 10.25" lid fits the 3qt Combo Cooker base, for example, allowing me to purchase one lid for several skillets.

Cons:

Duh, they're heavy. I'm talking two-hands-heavy. It's a drawback for sure, but nothing's perfect and I know the heaviness is directly related to all the reasons I really like my cast iron.

They're quirky cast iron doesn't like soap, doesn't like sudden temperature changes, and likes to stay very dry. But, like good table silver, the more the cast iron is put to use, the more forgiving and less tempermental it becomes.

I'm back to purchase more pieces, because Lodge cast iron has exceeded my expectations and caused me to take a sentimental approach to cooking how many Thanksgivings will I reach for this dutch oven?, I wonder. A cook with cast iron in his or her hand is at once an intimidating force to be reckoned with, and a comforting vision of timeless domesticity. Thanks to Lodge (and Amazon!), I can live up to that image with few qualifications and little effort.

The use of the Dutch oven has recently been reborn with just about every Food Network Chef/star touting their very own product version. During the holidays a good friend purchased a beautiful royal blue Le Crueset from William Sonoma and recently served us a wonderful roast beef and veggie dinner. The meat was flavorful and rich, cooked to perfection and had complexity in flavor, much more so that the same recipe cooked in a crock pot (which often leaves everything in the pot tasting the same).

As a wanna-be homesteader, in-training, I immediately decided I must have a Dutch Oven... I went straight to William Sonoma's site, credit card in hand, and stopped dead when I saw the price tag of the Le Creuset of $250.00+. As a bargain shopper who aims for product knowledge then sensible purchases, I set out to research my options to determine if a good dutch oven warranted such a heft price tag. I explored the Kitchen Aid, Le Creuset, Mario Batali, Calphalon, Lodge, Rachel Ray, Paula Dean and many others. All have varying price points and gorgeous enamel finish colors and sizes. What to do? Should I spend the $250 for the Le Creuset. Would my food taste that much better than the more economically priced Rachel Ray oven? 100+ product reviews later and I was on product information overload and still totally undecided.

So here do you go when you need to know? Thesocial networking sites, of course! I posted the question "Considering purchasing a Dutch oven, reviews, recommendations and feedback please!" Within the hour I began to receive a live stream of reviews from friends, family and associates. I asked questions like Enamel or Cast Iron? Which size oven works best for your family? Are they easy to care for? How often do you use it? Is it hard too season cast iron and maintain it?

The verdict is the beautifully colored enamel Le Crueset and Lodge products are the most popular choice from the average reviewer. However, it was my "foodie" friends who had opted for cast iron, sans enamel. Why? For several reasons, they explained, including preferring a natural product rather than one with dies but mostly for flavor. The cast iron absorbs the flavor of your meats, etc and releases them through the cooking process. The seasoning process, which after watching multiple YouTube videos, I learned takes time but is not difficult, enhances the flavors of your meals. Over time, if properly season and cared for, the pot will develop a rich black, smooth, non-stick surface. Cast iron was also the way of the original homesteader back in the 1700's which gave me the feeling of nostalgia.

I chose the Lodge Double Dutch for several reasons; Lodge has an excellent name and reputation behind it's brand and it was the choice of all of my "foodie" friends and flexibility of product by using the lid as a second cooking piece. Often when browning the meats it is recommended to do it in batches. The Double Dutch allows you to do all the meat at one time by using the lid as a cooking pan. This saves time! The size is perfect for a 2-4 person family meal. I also purchased the optional lid and trivet. This allows me to use the optional lid on the oven and continue to use the original lid as a second cooking pan, much like a 10" fry pan.

Seasoning was relatively easy. The Double Dutch comes pre-seasoned however it was recommended by those "in the know" to add a few seasoning processes of my own. This would give me that rich and glossy black non-stick finish. After watching videos online it was strongly recommended to begin with a saturated fat. I chose to use a few pieces of pastured and non-curred bacon from a local farmer. Hands down I have never had bacon taste this good. It cooked to perfection on the cast iron. Using a paper towel and tongs I gently wiped the bacon grease to coat the pan, and applied organic vegetable shortening to the lids and outer areas and placed in the oven at 275 degrees for 2.5 hours. The pans are beautiful. I plan to repeat this process several times until I obtain the finish that satisfies me.

Last night, snowed in under 16" of freshly fallen snow, I cooked my first meal in my Double Dutch. I browned ground beef in the oven, added onions and garlic, chicken stock red wine, tomato vinegar, salt, pepper, and marjoram and cooked on the stove to a boil. On top of the meat mixture I placed sliced carrots and then topped with sliced potatoes. I splashed a bit more tomato vinegar (FYI it's not recommended to use tomato products in cast iron so the tomato vinegar is great for adding the tomato flavor), added some seasoning and then placed large red cabbage leaves over the entire dish, one more splash of tomato vinegar and some sea salt, placed the lid on the dutch oven and popped it in the oven at 375 for about 40 minutes. When finished cooking I removed the cabbage and potatoes, placed the oven back on the stove, added corn starch to thicken the juices and brought to a boil. This all happens quickly because the oven is still piping hot. I served this over a small amount of egg pasta with the cabbage and potatoes on the side. All was excellent but cabbage was the best. It has steamed in the pot and absorbed some of the flavors meat and veggies. My husband and I have been together for almost 12 years and his comment on dinner was "this is one of the best meals you have ever made".

Clean up was easy. Allow the oven to cool a bit so you can safely handle it and wash with warm water and a sponge. A special scrub brush can be purchased for tougher jobs. Be sure you completely dry your cast iron and use a small amount of shortening to wipe down the oven before storing.

I am completely happy with my purchase and very pleased I opted for the cast iron product. I'm certain this oven will bring us many years of delicious meals and imagine passing the oven down to the next generation. It makes my heart happy to imagine a family member one day cooking with my oven and telling stories of warm and deliciously rich dishes from the past. At a savings of hundreds over the brightly colored enamel coated designer ovens, it has even left room in my budget to purchase additional Lodge cast iron pieces. I'm currently investigating the frying pan. Stay tuned and happy cooking!

****EDITED BELOW****

I am so very happy with this Dutch Oven.Just so you know where I'm coming from, my mom used a cast iron skillet when I was growing up.When I started on my own I also used a cast iron skillet and was very happy with it.Years ago I was in an accident which forced me to close up my apartment and move back home.I gave away all my cookware and focused on physical rehab. When I was patched up and ready to get back in the rat race I bought all T-Fal cookware which I've used for years. My reasons for going with Teflon was because the Teflon was ready to use right away so I could hit the ground running. It didn't require seasoning which was something I didn't want to be bothered with at that time.Using it has been okay but I truly missed my cast iron pan.You could do anything to that pan and it would still love you the next day.I've read people talking on here about the arduous task of having to re season cast iron regularly.I don't know what those people are talking about. All you have to do is keep using it, it seasons itself. You could even get one bland in the mail and not season it at all.Just start cooking on it and deal with strangely burnt food for a while till eventually it becomes seasoned with regular use.Even my Teflon pans became seasoned after years of using it on a regular basis.Seriously, cast iron is ridiculously low maintenance and that is one of my strongest reasons for upgrading to it.And now they come pre seasoned!BONUS! This wasn't the case when I bought one years ago.

All I've used in the past were skillets. This time around I decided to convert ALL of my cookware to cast iron.I went with this Dutch oven because it was eligible for the 4 for 3 deal here at Amazon and the other model I looked at wasn't.I was afraid of how heavy it would be.The Dutch oven really isn't all that bad weight wise.My electric slow cooker seems heavier by comparison. This is my first time using a cast iron Dutch oven and when I finally got it I was so excited I decided to start cooking on it right away. The fact that it comes pre seasoned bothered me a little because I didn't get to choose the kind of oil I wanted since it was already predetermined.Nobody is really selling unseasoned cast iron these days though so I decided to go with the Lodge brand made right here in America.I was really distracted by the concept of pre seasoning but now that the Dutch oven is here my misgivings about it are completely gone. The pre seasoning is not sticky or gross, it wasn't thick like it could chip off and there was no funny smell to it at all all things I was paranoid about.Compared to the worries about Teflon and the fumes from it though, the pre seasoning of cast iron is the least of my concerns. They were clean, ready to use and I loved being able to dig it right out of the box and start using it as soon as it arrived.

It was only received yesterday and so far I've used it twice to cook vegetables and once I've used the lid to fry bacon as suggested by another reviewer.FABULOUS!I will add that I didn't stir anything in these pots.I just set the food in and let it cook in there.Nothing stuck to the Dutch. When everything was done and the pot cooled I simply hosed it off with water and a soapy sponge, then dried it up.Splendid!Paper towels shed in this pot however. It might be better to use a cloth or a rag of some sort that wont leave lint behind.

The lid does not have a knob on the top like most lids you see on a Dutch oven. When I put this lid on the Dutch oven I'm sure not to line up the side handles to the handles on the Dutch so that it's easier to remove the lid for stirring, adding ingredients and peeking in to see how things are coming. The lid seems to fit the same way on the pot no matter which direction you put it on so there's no qualitative reason to line up the handles.Just make sure you protect your hands with oven mitts because this thing does get very hot.I just ordered another lid for it.It's not something I really *need* to do, the present lid works just fine.I just thought it might be nice to have one of those lids with the spiky interior for even distribution of condensation back in to the food as it cooks. The lid that comes with it is smooth inside which is handy for using it as a skillet. In all honesty I'm purchasing this other lid simply because I know it exists, the present lid is perfectly fine so far.I just like having other options and I'm hoping the spike lid I just bought will also fit on the Dutch oven lid.Wouldn't that be cool?

Don't be afraid of this Dutch oven. It's a keeper!I'm really pleased with my purchase.

EDIT:

I finally got the other lid and it fits perfectly with no problems.I'm glad I bought this particular Dutch however and not the other. The lid that comes with this Dutch is ideal for the way I use it.I make short ribs but instead of braising them beforehand I put them in the hot liquid straight from the freezer. The ribs pile up high in the Dutch. The new lid would not fit on top of the meat but the depth of the original lid makes it fit right over it with no problems.I've searched and you can't buy this lid separately, it only comes with this particular Dutch.I'm thrilled with the other lid too but I'm REALLY glad I have this one.Options are A+ in my book.Purchase a steel brush with this pot.I've bought a couple of Lodge cast iron products and they do tend to develope rust.I scrubbed them with a Quickie steel brush and reseasoned them a few times which solved the rust problem. You DO need to season these yourself though. The preseasoning is just a quick dressing to get you started.

As usual Lodge has outdone themselves with this unique double dutch oven.It makes excellent roast and the great part is that the top can be used as a serving platter for the table keeping the sliced roast and vegetables warm as only cast iron can do. It also works well for cobblers, stews and soups.

Fusionbrands Love Silicone Handle

Fusionbrands Love Handle Silicone Pan Handle Grip and Utensil Rest, RedThis baby is great. But, it works best on handles that are not flat like cast iron pans.Handles of pans can be straight but if they are flat the thing can't perform its most important function for me which is to storethe large stirring spoon or paddle on it while cooking. The wet or business end of the spoon is dangling over the pan so no dripping on the stove. So yes I love it otherwise.Elsewhere on Amazon there is a flat handle cover for cast iron pans ... get it! get two.they way cheap and so necessary if you use iron pans. Also for using iron pans of the grille ... get the flat one!

I think this is a quality product and with a very thick handle it would be great. For our Falk copper cookware it isn't what we reach for because it just doesn't fit well. It kind of collapses around the relatively narrow handles and you end up having to expend more energy on the grip than the lifting. We end up using the simple cloth, potholder-style slip on handle covers. Cheaper, more comfortable and they do the job.

This handle has never been a good fit for any of my pans.I have burned myself, when it has slipped off while I was lifting a large (but not heavy) pan. Would recommend against!

Works ok, but not on cast iron.It does not work very well on cast iron, it makes the pan unstable to hold.I almost burned myself yesterday pulling a cast iron skillet (Lodge specifically) out of the over with this on the handle. On my stovetop pans it works fine and keeps me from having to have a spoon rest on the stovetop.

I think this is a great product for just handles, but not for general use, and if I recall correctly, the ad for it claimed ore uses than just handles.I have a tea pot with a metal handle that gets too hot.I bought this for that purpose, but it's too awkward to use.Instead, I got a standard fabric type pot holder material "handle pot holder" and it works much better.

All-Clad Stainless 7-1/2-Inch French Skillet

All-Clad Stainless 7-1/2-Inch French SkilletHaving owned a restaurant and now retired, All Clad are the pans we use and trust to provide even heat. Now having added an INDUCTION cook top this SS magnetic pan works great so we save on electric use, don't have a hot stove top after cooking so don't overheat the kitchen. Highly recommended.

I had to alter my cooking procedures slightly from what I did with my old non-stick surface. Using spray olive oil and heating the pan slowly before adding food but once you figure it out the pans work great and omelets and eggs come out perfect with virtually no clean-up. The pans heat evenly and look great on the rack.

Beka Cookware Chef Eco-logic 100-Percent Bekadur Ceramica Non-Stick Fry Pan

Beka Chef Eco-logic 100-Percent Eco-Hardened-Aluminum Bekadur-Ceramica-Nonstick 9-1/2-Inch Fry PanQuick summary:Nice non-stick pan that feels beautiful in the hand and works great.High-quality product.

"Jack of all trades, master of none" would be my current opinion of this pan.

So there is definitely a place for it in my kitchen, and it is actually still my most-frequently-used pan.

After more than 2 years, it appears that while the non-stick properties do degrade somewhat after the first 6-9 months or so of regular use, it is very durable once in that state. The degraded non-stick Beka pan is still much better than a worn-out Teflon pan, and much easier to clean up than a stainless steel pan.So far it has handled high-temperature cooking well, which Teflon and lesser ceramic pans cannot do.

Original review:

I wanted a non-"Teflon" ceramic-coated non-stick pan since I occasionally accidentally overheat my pans, which destroys "Teflon" (generic name:PTFE)Most "Teflon-free" nonstick pans use the same exact chemical as Teflon (PTFE), just manufactured by a company other than Dupont, so "Teflon-free" nonstick is almost always a marketing trick unless the coating is ceramic (several expensive non-stick pan-makers are guilty of misleading marketing to the point of fraud because the products are virtually the same as $30 pans). But most ceramic-coated nonstick pans use a thin layer of non-stick ceramic on top of anodized aluminum, which isn't hard enough so the brittle ceramic coating cracks quickly.Such pans typically only last a few months.

I was originally going to buy a Beka Vita pan due to the stainless steel construction (harder, plus I don't want aluminum leaching into my food), but when I read up on PEO aluminum I realized that Beka had made the correct decision in using that material for its higher-end product.

The key to this product which sets it apart from the competition is Plasma Electrolytic Oxide Aluminum, which provides a hard enough under-layer to prevent the ceramic coating from rapidly flaking off like competing products.PEO Aluminum is harder than steel and won't leach into food unless the ceramic coating is mostly destroyed to the point that you'd probably throw the pan away anyway (I would not use non-coated anodized aluminum cookware, or non-hardened aluminum cookware).PEO Aluminum is basically a super-thick anodized aluminum oxide coating, dozens of times thicker than cheaper anodizing processes, which means that the surface is extremely durable by comparison.

Aluminum oxide ceramic is otherwise known as sandpaper grit very hard stuff and a good choice for binding another ceramic to a metal pan.

I'll be using this primarily to cook eggs nearly every day.

UPDATE 12/31/2011:New Year's eve and the pan is still working fine.I have treated it as carefully as I would treat a cheap Teflon pan (no metal utensils, hand washing) and it's rewarded me with working well.

UPDATE 1/1/2012: Apparently, you are not supposed to use non-stick spray with non-stick ceramic pans the spray can ruin pans. They are not compatible.I found this out after reading someone else's review of non-stick ceramic cookware. Not an issue for me because I never liked the thought of spraying silicone on my food...Nothing magical in those cans, so I just use a bit of oil instead and pass on the other chemicals.

UPDATE 3/4/2012:Well, the non-stick properties of this pan appear to have gone south somewhat. That is unfortunate.I was hoping that it would last longer and I always treated it with care, but it's full non-stick properties ended up lasting about as long as any other non-stick pan I've ever used. It's still a decent pan and it looks OK and the ceramic layer appears intact, but it doesn't really behave like a non-stick pan anymore.Considering that the non-stick properties of the ceramic coating apparently will not last for years, probably it would make sense to use the cheaper stainless-steel product.

UPDATE 1/17/2013:I'm still using this pan daily and have been treating it rougher (searing steaks on high, using plastic scrub pads, etc...) and it hasn't gotten any worse over the past year.Perhaps this heavily-used pan is not as non-stick as a new Teflon pan, but after an initial degradation in the non-stick qualities over 6 months, it does seem to be quite durable.

After much research which revealed that pretty much ALL the eco friendly non-stick ceramic brands are having issues after a few months of use, i decided on this (until very recently) 5 star rated, but quite expensive pan.

So far, so good. I have only used it 4 times so far, for eggs and veggie burgers. It is VERY non-stick...almost too non stick when it comes to frying eggs. It is difficult to get the spatula to flip them. (i know whitewhine.com right? ha!) But no complaints so far. It seems well made and durable as far as i can tell. DOES feel good in the (stays cool) hand, as one reviewer mentioned.

A couple notes: 1) don't expect the outer enamel to be glossy. It's not...it's very much matte finish. Something to do with the eco friendly process they employ. i don't want the outside to get marred, so im being super careful with it. 2) don't use a Scotchbrite type pad on the bottom of the pan (or probably anywhere else). the bottom is the hardened aluminum. i thought it would be harmless to scrub the glue from the sticker off with the Scotchbrite, but it scratched it a lot. No biggie since it's only the bottom...just letting you know. i love the 9.5 inch size i got. Very versatile. Bottom line is the Bialetti, the Earthpan, etc...NONE of them are getting consistent reviews...way too many failings after fair bit of use. This seems to be the only exception and it IS a good looking pan. i'm sorry the one user had a problem, but like the commenter said..it's probably because of the use of cooking sprays that caused it. This pan is a pretty penny, but when it comes to eco friendly ceramic non stick, it's clear that you get what you pay for. If i have any issues, i will be sure to update. one more note. Scanpans..which also get great reviews..are only PFOA free..and not PFTE free as well.

More comments due to recent reviews: 1) don't use on high heat no matter what the advertisement for it says. the instructions say to use no higher than medium-high heat, which is sufficient for just about anything. 2) don't use cooking spray--instructions state this as well--these two things could be causing issues for some people 3) the product has a THREE YEAR warranty on the non-stick..and is the only eco friendly one who has this. I.E. you really can't go wrong! mine has had no issue so far.

I bought this over Thanksgiving when it was cheaper on a Lightening Deal.

I took care of it/handled it according to the instructions, but after 2 months of moderate use (2-3 times a week) marks started showing up on the coating, without me having ever used any kind of steel wool or non-nonstick approved tools. I never put it in the dishwasher, never used nostick spray, never put water in it when it was hot, prepared it before first use according to instructions, etc...Now the nonstick surface is not working at all anymore, stuff sticks to it and it won't clean anymore. Basically have to throw it away now.

Don't buy, terrible quality, stops working after a few months. I bought some WMF nonstick skillets now, I hope they work better. I also use some Calphalon non-stick cookware and it works great.

Update: I tried to contact Beka through their US website in regards to warranty and they absolutely ignored my request for information.

I had been searching for a non-stick pan for quite a while now. I have owned a few All Clad non stick pans which work....for a while. They tend to lose their non stick properties in less than a year and need to be replaced. Also, I have been reading about the possible health risks of eating off or cookware using teflon. Not only is it a possible carcinogen when heated, it is harmful to the enviroment and the workers who make these pans.

In my food blog reading, I came across a review for the Beka ceramic finish non stick pan. It is made in an eco-friendly manner, causing minimal damage to the enviroment and does not expose its workers to the dangers of teflon production. Not only is it responsible, it works! The degree of non-stickiness far exceeds my All Clad pans, the finish seems to be more durable than teflon (you do not see any scratches from utensils), and clean up is simply easy. I have recommended this pan to many friends already. I am very happy with this purchase!

Aside from knowing it's eco-friendly, this pan feels good in the hand. The surface (much like an enamel or ceramic surface) is much smoother than traditional non-sticks and it cleans up like a breeze. Haven't tried the dishwasher yet, but it is dishwasher safe and looks like it. After a week of daily multiple uses I have to say it was worth every penny. HIGHLY recommend.

The title says it all for me.

I haven't used the pans yet but was disappointed when the packing was torn apart and the skittles half in and out.

Worst yet the pans were filthycovered is some sort of brown dust dirt.

I have only used this grill pan a few times; for some reason it is not perfectly round. I have been sooooooo careful with this pan, that I have no idea how it lost its shape. I would have really appreciated a GUIDE as to how to use this pan for different foods there was NOTHING! I have learned my lesson I will not order pans online in the future; this was not inexpensive, and I do not have any idea as to how to utilize this grill pan to the fullest.

GreenPan Stockholm Skillet - 8" - Non-stick

GreenPan Stockholm Skillet - 8' - Non-stickI purchased a set of this cookware at Target approximately 9 months ago. I have used the skillet to make omlettes 6-10 times a month. I use a smidge of butter for flavor in the beginning. The pans were non-stick and there were no issues. However, after about three months, the non-stickiness began to wear out and I've got burn marks on the pan that will not come off, despite soaking and hot water and scrubbing with a scratch-resistant sponge. I appreciate the safety factor of the Green Pan over 'traditional' non-stick pans, but I believe I will be looking at another alternative solution so that I do not have to replace the pan every 6 months.

Update:

The pans got to the point by January that they were completely unusable. I could use 3 pats of butter to cook 2 eggs, and I would need 3 more pats to flip the eggs and they would STILL stick.

Target, of course, no longer carries the pans because they suck. I was referred to the manufacturer who first offered to send me replacements (I was quite clear in my email indicating that I had purchased them from Target). I declined as I have since purchased Cuisinart Green Gourmet Cookware set and LOVE THEM. The employee told me they would send me a return label and issue me a refund (in writing). I asked what would be the timeline for receiving refund, when she said it would be forwarded to HSN. I advised her I did not purchase it from HSN as my email stated. She said they couldn't refund it then.I advised her that her oversight was not my problem. I was then treated extremely rude.

If you do research online, you'll see that there are mentions of defective batches and that the Better Homes and Gardens seal is being revoked. They have Facebook pages about how much the Greenpans suck. And I have created a blog dedicated to how much Greenpans suck showing photos of what 'lifetime non-stick' is like as well as the emails I received.

I have been cooking for over 30 years and this is the worst pan I've ever owned. The nonstick properties disappear after several uses making this pan more difficult to clean than any pan I've ever used. Very unhappy

Scanpan Professional 10.25 inch Square Grill Pan

Scanpan Professional 10.25 inch Square Grill PanI'm a loyal Scanpan user, but whatever you do, DON'T BUY THIS PAN.I've had it for 3 months, and already food sticks to the ridges. I've followed the directions very carefully and have used nothing abrasive on it.When I wrote to Scanpan to complain, the customer service rep gave me a long and tortured process to "restore" the pan.Restore?Really? The pan is 3 months old.Plus, their customer service is the pits I think it's outsourced to Asia which would be fine except that the response was scripted and off point.Save yourself a headache and buy another brand.

After reading a lot of reviews I decided to buy it, I have a few Scanpan fry pans which I love, live in a condo and BBQ is not allowed so I've tried so many options, Prolodge cast iron(good but hard to clean and makes the apt very smoky) and so far this is the closet to an outdoor grill, use it to grill steaks ( fits 2 10-12 oz strip loins, 2 or 3 burgers) and it's soo easy to clean, when still warm wipe it down with paper towel and when it cools down wash it it hot running water, it does not stick at all! it doesn't make the place too smoky. If you use common sense to use it it will last long and if something goes bad with the one I have I'd buy it again, nothing lasts forever!

All-Clad Stainless 14-Inch Nonstick Fry Pan

All-Clad Stainless 14-Inch Nonstick Fry Panthat said, the All-Clad Stainless 14-Inch Nonstick Fry Pan has clearly failed. the non-stick surface began to deteriorate long before any other non-stick pan we've owned has in the past.

we received this pan as part of 10-peice set, and really, it's the only complaint we have about the set in general. the rest of the All-Clad pieces have performed beautifully and withstood all of the rigors of being cookware in a house with two accomplished and passionate chefs.

about a year ago we gave up on this pan and purchased the 'Restaurant Fry Pan Set' from Nordic Ware (8" and 10") and they have performed much better than the All-Clad version of the same and held there non-stick surface now four times as long -at a fraction of the cost! unfortunately this set is not currently available on amazon.

Note: I should point out, in response to the "weekend" chef who gave this pan five stars, that both my wife and I are well versed in the care of non-stick pans (plastic and wooden utensils only, let them cool before you wash them, etc.) and the surface still deteriorated. I'm sticking to my guns, (no pun intended) these two other non-stick fry pans have now lasted over four years without a hitch. the All-Clad lasted only six-months with the same love and care.

I must agree with the negative reviewers that this pan's nonstick coating began coming off almost immediately after I began using it.I'm not talking about scratches, which often are a result of using the wrong kind of implements for cooking and cleaning. My pan began pock all over, even up the sides where I rarely touch them.I hung on to this pan for 3 years, simply because I could not bear to part with it for the expense. But eventually I had to treat it like my other All-Clad pans (which I LOVE) and use full amounts of oil to cook.It was no longer worth using.

Although the reviewer who loves this pan was "certain" the rest of us who have not liked this pan were not caring for the pan properly, that "certainty" is based on nothing but speculation.I cared for my pan precisely according to the directions provided by All-Clad.Of course, I could have asked All-Clad to replace it early on, since it was clear the nonstick coating was coming off on its own accord. But that would not have changed the fact that the coating on my pan was coming off.

Buy All-Clad Stainless 14-Inch Nonstick Fry Pan Now

When I went to acquire a non-stick pan, I was dubious of all of them.Teflon is a great substance (thanks Du Pont!) but it scratches way too easy for anything in the kitchen.I had burned through several non-stick pans that were well cheapo no name pans.

I picked up quite a few All-Clads at once 6 or 7 years ago.It was time to trash all the hand-me-down pans from the parents and ex-roommates over the years.

I have no idea what this "professional-grade" bonded material is but it has been nothing but perfect for us as a family. While I actively avoid scraping it with metal utensils, it does get stacked with other metal pans inside it in a drawer and in the sink.It still does not have a single scratch or blemish and we use it more than any other fry pan.The only pan that sees more use is a small Silit pan I bought in Germany 9 years ago.We actually plan on buying an 8" and probably a 12" soon.

You can cook just about anything without burning it within reason.Naturally oil will still smoke, but when this is on low flame I can walk out of the kitchen if I need to.So the core of the pan distributing the heat well and the non-stick surface seems to drastically reduce burning.Making an omelette for two in this pan is crazy easy. You can just stir up your eggs and goodies, let it set to solid on low, and simply use a plastic/silicon spatula to flip it over in half.Presto, you are done.In the regular stainless All-Clad fry pans we have, we would have to constantly scrap the omelette off the bottom to prevent burning and that just does not work well with an omelette heh.

From hamburger helper to saffron rosotto we have nothing to say but good things about this pan.I am actually quite surprised that it is a material bonded to steel and not anodized aluminum on the inside since it seems so impervious.

Back when I got ours, it was definitely made in Pennsylvania.Perhaps some other later batches were offshored and not quite up to snuff?Other than that I could only guess that folks with problem pans are perhaps cooking things in it that we are not.Since I have no idea what this coating is, I could not even begin to guess what might affect it.Other than not cooking meat that often, we cook just about everything in the pan.

I purchased the complete All-Clad set over 5 years ago and the 14-inch fry pan will need to be tossed. The teflon is fraying and coming off at the top of the pan, but not in the center. The smaller saute pan is fine as well as the other pieces, so I'm keeping those. I don't know if it's some sort of defect in the larger fry pan, but I'm disappointed. What would I do differently? Probably buy each All-Clad piece separately and get another larger fry pan from another brand.

I purchased this fry pan in June of this year and it is almost to a state where it is ready to be thrown away as of December 1st.I would have expected the nonstick surface to be of superior quality and durability from All-Clad, but the sad truth is that I have had cheap grocery store pans that have maintained the coating far longer, and a small fraction of the cost. After just a few weeks the surface became scratched on this pan and the coating started to come off in the food ick!I love the uncoated All-Clad, but I will be looking elsewhere for nonstick in the future.

Scanpan Classic 12-1/2-Inch Covered Chef Pan

Scanpan Classic 12-1/2-Inch Covered Chef PanExcellent non-stick properties, but like every other non-stick coating I have ever come across, it will eventually start to peel.Important differences that I should point out though are: 1) Much easier to brown on this pan, not sure if it's because of the high heat that this non-stick pan can handle, or the fact that because it is a large sized pan foods can more easily be spread out so things don't parboil; 2) Oil doesn't seem to smoke; 3) It's lasted longer than any other of our non-stick pans with everyday abuse; 4) can handle our oven at 500 degrees; AND 5) (and most important) The SCANPAN company truly does seem to stand behind their product! I called up about 2-3 weeks ago noting that my pan was starting to peel (just a few small scratches/peels near the center), and they immediately emailed me a RA # and form to return the damaged pan and less than 2-weeks after I sent in my original Chef/Saute pan, we received via FedEx a brand new one.

Sizewise, it's noticeably larger (wider and deeper) than Calphalon's Everyday Pans (Simply Calpholon or Contemporary versions) but not too big like the Ecolution Artistry 14 Inch Colossus Pan (all available on Amazon by the way). BUT, it is much more expensive.

Yes, this line of cookware is expensive. And yes, it is worth it.I have a gas stove, so I do not have a "must be level" issue. This pan just replaced 3 older pieces of cookware (I did keep my Revereware pan sentimental). It heats and cooks evenly, uses less heat to cook completely, and cleans up like a dream. The manufacturer says this can go in the dishwasher, but I do not do that with my good pans.I have decided to replace all of my old cookware with Scanpan items.

This pan is a great size, the lack of a long handle makes it great for serving too.We got it just yesterday and ended up pan frying some meatballs and making a white sauce in it.It cleans up in a snap too.

Santa Fe QM2R 900-Watt Quesadilla Maker

Santa Fe QM2R 900-Watt Quesadilla MakerThis Quesadilla maker lets you get creative with your quesadillas. Of course you can make quesadillas on the stove-top in a pan like some reviewers suggested...but this makes it easy, no-mess and you don't have to stand at the stove top to flip, so you can bring it to the table and have a tabletop party.

What I love is that I can make quesadillas with very little oil in this maker as opposed to stove top. The quesadillas come out crispy and with distinct segments that I can quickly cut with a pizza cutter. I love serving the wedges as snacks at cocktail parties, especially as they come out crispy and sealed and can be served as a finger food.

There is also no end to fillings. My favorites 1) spinach/sundried tomatoes/cheese or 2)mushrooms/red peppers/grilled chicken/provolone cheese or 3)mashed potatoes seasoned with red onions/green chilli/cilantro/a dash of any good spice mix/a light sprinkling of cheese 4) roasted corn/red pepper/black beans/cheese 5) broccoli/chicken/cheese 6) spicy turkey mince cooked Indian "keema" style with green peas and tomatoesas you can see the list of yummy ingredients goes on and on.

I just prep the surfaces with a quick spray of olive/canola oil and don't use much cheese. So much better than the calorie rich quesadillas you get in restaurants. You can even use any tasty leftovers/casseroles as stuffing for the quesadillas. My family and friends simply love the quesadilla parties where I lay out many ingredients and they can mix and match and make their own quesadillas.

Some tips: If you use cheese try using the natural cheese which creates less mess than the melting processed variety. Also buy the bigger tortillas so that the whole surface is covered and the edges are neatly sealed. If you must use a small tortilla, put less filling right in the center and go very easy on the cheese, or it will seep out and create a mess. If you do get a mess, it is very easy to clean it off with a damp paper towel right after you take out your quesadilla.

Napoleon Dynamite's grandma would be proud to own one of these!Works great. One little tip before you head to the grocery store... you must use the LARGE "burrito size" tortillas with this.If you try to use smaller tortillas like "taco size" or "fajita size," they won't extend out to the part of the grilling surface that seals the edges and your melting cheese will flow out the sides. The instructions say you must use a 10" diameter torilla. That's usually sold as "burrito size."I agree with Diane that an on/off switch would have been a nice feature, but it still works wonderfully.

I love this product! Try it with the flavored tortilla wraps they have out now, I had a great spinach tortilla quesadilla with green chilis, awesome, after that I had to buy one for myself and I don't regret it. It preheats within five minutes, flop a full-size burrito tortilla or wrap on there, load it with fillings, throw another one on close the lid, let it heat and there you are: lunch in under fifteen minutes, it's that easy. Since I am very lazy about any sort of cooking, this has made my lunches so much more fulfilling. Another note, so far, none of the fillings I've used have stuck to the nonstick surface and it is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Just don't overfill the tortillas or they won't seal at the edges and the fillings will leak out.

I have a cheese quesadilla fanatic for a husband and never could get his approval when it came to making his favorite at home. Tried the oven and broiler method and just ended up with either a soggy mess or a burnt beyond edible trash can item. Well, I happened to stumble upon this handy little item. Wow, has this made my life easier. Better yet, He can now make his own. It makes the most wonderful quesadillas ever. Just a few minutes in the machine and you have the perfect snack. They are sealed and have the perfect consistancy. And don't know why but stay warmer longer than others. I figure this is due to the sealing of the tortilla. I also love the separations in the cooker. It makes it so easy to serve and gives it a real professional look. I have also tried a few of the recipes that come along with the machine and they were just great. Give this maker a try. It really will make your life easier, whether it's for your quesadilla fanatic or for the kids afterschool snacks. Also, Stands on end so it's easy to store.

Chef's Design 20-Inch Grill

Chef's Design 20-Inch GrillI bought this grill for my glass top stove and I am not happy with the nonstick coating as it isn't non-stick AND it comes off when you clean it.This grill pan is a bear to clean I have tried everything! I really don't want non-stick cookware to begin with but it is hard to find a cast iron grill pan with a flat bottom so when I bought this it was the only game in town.I will not buy another one!

KitchenAid Gourmet Aluminum Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set, Red

KitchenAid Gourmet Aluminum Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set, Red ()In recent years, I've upgraded my cheap old pots and pans to really good KitchenAid cookware. I started by buying the KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials Hard Anodized Nonstick 12-Piece Cookware Set about two years ago and was pretty happy with them, although they weren't perfect.

I was impressed enough with that older set that I didn't even think twice when offered the KitchenAid Gourmet Porcelain Enamel Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set in red for review I simply accepted the offer. I was interested to see if they improved on my old set and honestly, I was happy to have another set of really good cookware.

This new set met almost all of my expectations. Unfortunately, KitchenAid has not improved their technology in a way that allows them to completely satisfy me. Like my old set, these new pots and pans can't be put in the dishwasher without voiding the warranty. This is the only reason I am not giving them five stars. If they could be put in the dishwasher, they'd be perfect.

That said, they wash really easily by hand and this method is just fine most of the time. I simply think that the dishwasher does the best job in sterilizing dishes and prefer it whenever possible. For those who usually wash pots and pans by hand anyway, this is likely not an issue at all.

With the bad news out of the way, I'll move on to the positive points, which are numerous. Like my other KitchenAid cookware, this set cooks really well. Using my electric stove, the heat is distributed very well and everything I've tried cooks evenly. The glass lids are fantastic, allowing you to check the progress of your dish without the need to remove the lid and allow heat to escape.

Both the lids and the pans have kind of a rubbery-type grip that stays cool so you can touch them while cooking with bare hands.

The 10-piece set offers a good variety of sizes that come in handy no matter what you need to cook. My only wish here is that it had an 8-quart stockpot instead of a 6-quart stockpot. Of course, the 6-quart stockpot is useful for a lot of things too, but I like to freeze homemade chili, spaghetti sauce, chicken stock and more, so a larger pot is extremely useful when cooking for such a purpose.

Now for the purely superficial pro: these pots and pans are just beautiful. I have always admired cookware with enamel coating outside and I am particularly drawn to red for this. My one fear was that the enamel might be easy to scratch and not last but after using this set, I think the KitchenAid set will stay just as pretty as it did when I took it out of the box for a good long time.

()I've had these for four months and here are the things I like about them:

1. They heat really fast.

2. The lids are nice; you can see your food without taking the lid off.

3. I like the color. I know other people didn't but I thought it was nice.

4. My favorite is the 3 Quart covered saute. I use that nearly everyday and wish my other pans were like this.

Things I am ambivalent about:

1. There's no steam hole in the lids. The steam escapes from the rim instead and can sometimes make the lid dance up and down.

Things I don't like:

1. The handles have little silicone comfort grips but the comfort grip doesn't entirely cover the handle, there's a little sliver of metal on each side of the grips which gets really hot. I notice this especially on the lids.

2. These pans are not dishwasher safe. To be fair, many similar brands, such as Calphalon, are also not dishwasher safe. The only ones I found that could go in the dishwasher are Circulon pans and they're much heavier and often more expensive.

3. After only four months of using them, there are scratches at the bottoms of my pans. Granted, I use them A LOT but I only use non-stick safe cooking utensils. Apparently my food is abrasive?

Things I observed:

I followed the directions and only hand washed my skillets and saute pan. It's very easy since food comes right off the enamel exterior and the non-stick interior makes cleaning a breeze. But with the small sauce pans, I just throw them in the dishwasher. I also throw the lids in the dishwasher too. So far, I haven't noticed much difference between the hand washed and the machine washed.

()This is a very solid set of pans and I'm enjoying using them, especially the fryers. I do have other non-stick pans and unfortunately this set does not quite rank up there with my other pans. For example, cleaning up after cooking scrambled eggs in these pans is not an easy "wipe and done" process. In fact, the pan handles are secured by bolts on the inside of the pans and the food gets stuck underneath the bolts and cleaning them is not all that easy. The construction, however, is solid and the beautiful red color makes this a very attractive set that I believe will last for a long time.

When I bought these I thought they would be a little more heavy duty. Don't get me wrong, these are a decent quality p&p's but not what I think of when I think of Kitchenaid. The bottoms are the same thickness as the sides with no extra cook surface. Although the handles are decent quality with good size pop rivets. Also the large saute' pan is only 31/2 qts, kind of small. I used to be a chef and I was used to good commercial heavy duty p&p's, but they were a lot more expensive. Also by being a chef I am very hard on my p&p's. But hey if you are looking for a nice looking set of p&p's and are gental on your cookware these might be for you.

I have since looked at more p&p's and found that the Tfal's are a little better quality for the money or for just a little more coin the Martha Stewarts are real nice. God bless and bon appatite'.

()When one thinks of KitchenAid, the first thing that pops to mind is the line of those professional and commercial stand mixers, such as the KitchenAid Professional 5.5 QT Commercial Style Stand Mixer that are known for their power, performance and long term durability.

This KitchenAid Gourmet Porcelain Enamel Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set in red is a far cry from what one might imagine when one hears "I enjoy using KitchenAid appliances in my kitchen," but from a number of months of use, the quality appears to be there. This cookware set includes most of the basic pots and pans that one would expect in a kitchen for daily use.

The Set:

There are 1 and 2 quart saucepans for making so many basic items of for cooking a few bowls of hot cereal in the morning. The 6 quart covered stockpot is perfect for boiling pasta of all types, making soups or stew or anything else where you see the term "stockpot" showing up in a recipe. The 3 quart covered saute pan is wide and straight-sided, and can perform a great number of the functions of a skillet, but it has deep sides for extra capacity. This one is ideal for those one-dish meals, and it's now a favorite for simmering chili.

But it's the two skillets in this set, both the 8-1/2-inch and 10-inch, that really get the use. The larger one is great for quesadilla, cooking eggs, frying bacon, or making such things as a simple grilled cheese sandwich. Just remember to use wood or nylon spatula/turner in the skillets to eliminate as much scratching as possible.

Other details:

The glass tops are nice for watching the progress of the foods being cooked without having to constantly lift lids every few minutes. The handles are interesting in that they're made of both soft silicone for easy and safe handling, and stainless steel for the main part.

Cleaning:

It's suggested that these pieces not be put into a dishwasher or else it might void the warranty. Will admit that I've occasionally washed them this way, but only after carefully insuring that neither the non-stick interiors or porcelain come in contact with anything else. I don't suggest or recommend this, but have heard that it's the banging into each other when a dishwasher is sloppily or improperly loaded that causes the problem, and so far so good. Other than that, they generally clean well, both interior and exterior, when washed with standard liquid dish soap and a sponge.

Summary:

This is an good set and and a great buy for anyone wishing to replace some older pots and pans with something not only a bit more contemporary, but to add a bit of color to a kitchen, as this is also quite an attractive and eye-catching set. It's a 5-star choice for this fumbling amateur gourmet cook who thinks that Anthony Bourdain: A Cook's Tour is where to get creative food tips.

So who says one cannot have a bit of fun in the process while adding other red items, such as this Kuhn Rikon 4-Inch Nonstick Colori Paring Knife? And yes, I got it...
