Berghoff Virgo Non-Stick Fry Pan

Berghoff Virgo 8-Inch Non-Stick Fry PanI always state that before you rate an item let me know what other similar item you are comparing it to. In this case I compared this with my Paderno World Cuisine Ceramic coated pan that has a carbon steel core. Yes the steel on the Paderno makes it a bit heavier but I actually prefer that. In terms of versatility I give the Berghoff Virgo the nod. Its lighter. Has double sided pour spouts a removable twist off handle so it can be placed directly into the oven and a magnetic induction bottom and for slightly cheaper price. I cook on gas range only and I never put my pan into the oven so the versatility does not matter much but I think the pour edges are a nice touch and the bright red color is nice. But here's the kickier the Berghoff will be used from time to time. My Paderno sits on my stovetop 24-7. I actually prefer the stainless steel core to aluminum core. I don't believe the hype that the ceramic surface will last as long as the pan itself but do believe its non toxic. If the surface wears down over time what metal core would you prefer, aluminum or carbon steel. Hands down carbon steel. I have not had either pan long enough to see how they wear over extended periods. I'll edit this if I notice something of concern.

Update: The pan started off with a bang. Now i'm plagued with the handle constantly twisting off and the ceramic coating in spots has gummed up. As most ceramic or non stick pans we either get poor quality or toxic. Go get the cheaper ceramic non-stick pans if it goes bad it won't matter. At this price it does matter and they should have done a way better job.

Poor product Poor customer service Would not buy again for half the price

Warning: First time reviewer here, but I use the reviews of products exclusively on whether or not to purchase products on amazon.com. I do not want any other users to go through the same poor customer service I did only to gain nothing.

I have purchased a set of Berghoff Scala Ceramic coated frying pans. I used the main 12" pan for about a month. As time progresses the pan started to stick. I contacted the customer service dept. that told me to deep clean the pan with baking soda and water. After it was dry add oil to the pan while slowly reheating it.I did this several times to cure my pan as suggested by the customer service rep. He assured me that it would take some time for this to work. This took place over 4 months after purchasing the set.I then got preoccupied when moving into my renovated kitchen. After dealing with my renovation I found the pan again. It was now 12 months since purchase.I had a new representative that made it sound like the guy I was speaking to previously did a poor job and was let go, which he was very rude. She stated they needed to find my files and reopen the review of my pan.She advised me to send the pan in so the warranty dept. could look at the pan. I had to pay shipping both ways but I figured they would at least get my pan back into good condition.Berghoff never called or emailed that they had my pan even though I sent a letter with the pan. After waiting a month I decided to email and see if they received the pan. The last customer service rep I had was now gone and I had a new one again. She had to find the pan again and pull up the files. After a reply from the newest customer service rep she stated that my pan was not covered under warranty.WHAT?

She explained that due to the color of the bottom of the pan I had overheated the pan and that the warranty was now void. I the dirt she cleaned on the bottom of my pan was on all our pans we had. We have a glass top range that we cool all our meals on. It does get dirty at times. I simply took a nylon scrubber to clean one of the other pans I had just to see how hard it was.I emailed back stating that her suggestion was not the case and that I wanted to speak to a supervisor.Three weeks later still no response.I called and was directed to the same person I was dealing with my emails.She said she brought the pan to her supervisor and stated that she agreed while refusing to allow me to speak to her supervisor.

The facts: Not once did I ever cook with the pan over ½ heat on my range top. I primarily cooked eggs, sausage, warmed up veggies, and cooked some fish. Mind you that I only used the pan 1 month.I hand washed it after every use. At first everything would slide out of the pan. The pan got to the point where I had to scrape it each time after use and then let it sit in soap water. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AFTER 1 MONTH OF USE!

Due to the numerous customer service representatives, poor service, and average pans I would never recommend anyone buy from this company. They did offer me a deal though, 50% off their retail of a new pan.That was almost the same price I could buy it off of amazon.com.

My spouse wanted a good frying pan and we saw a demonstration of this one in the mall. Unfortunately, this product fell short of our expectations. I returned this product to amazon and they faithfully replaced it. The second pan yeiled the same results. All of the oil or sauce slid to the edge of the pan and left the center without oil or sauce. Consequently, what ever remained in the center stuck to the pan and produced undesirable results. Eggs would've stick to the pan. I took pictures and sent it to the manufacture and got no results. This is why I am writing this poor review. I definitely would not recommend it to no one.

I have RR 10", differend handle and made more solid, I love it, that is why I got this set.Boy was I fooled.This is more thinner than my 10", the hanndle is different.Looking around in the stores this one is a newer set.Try and find the older ones if you can.

I bought this because we needed some new nonstick frying pans and I wanted some that had a coating which did not chip off. It doesn't. However, the pans are delicate and cannot stand up to higher heat. This means that you can only cook food in them on low heat. What good is a frying pan that you can only use on low heat? This means no cooking meat in them as you cannot sear the outside to keep the inside juicy. No cooking anything that needs higher heat. So far we have only used our smaller frying pan and that only a few times and already the outside is black from the electric burner and the inside has food charred to it. I am already searching for another brand of cookware that is both nonstick and more sturdy, yet does not cost an arm and a leg. I would never buy any more frying pans in this brand.

We have been using these pans daily for almost two months. So far we are extremely satisfied. The pans are more lightweight than our more expensive stainless steel set, but that's a good thing for our older wrists. They are so easy to clean that it's almost fun.

I have owned several "non-stick" skillets, but it seems that the finish wears off so quickly.I checked reviews from different websites and for an inexpensive price range, this set received very good reviews.I waited to review it because I have been too quick in the past to say "I love it", and then a month or so later ended up hating it.I really do love these skillets.I use one almost every day.It is important to know that the manufacturer tells you not to heat the skillet above medium heat to protect the non-stick finish.I haven't found one yet that doesn't give the same instructions.That is very key to making your skillet last.However, even with following those instructions in the past, the finish quickly wore off.Not so with this set.They are still "like new".I am very happy with my purchase and I have owned these skillets for a year.

Emeril by All-Clad E884SC74 Chef's Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set, Silver ()This is a very nice set of lightweight stainless steel cookware.If you are shopping around and trying to compare the differences, I will try to help you distinguish the features from a couple of other brands that I currently own.In addition to this set, I have the Rachael Ray stainless and also the Kitchen Aid stainless.

First of all, the Emeril pots and pans are by far the lightest weight.The Rachael Ray comes in the middle with very thick bottoms and thinner sides, and the Kitchen Aid is by bar the thickest and heaviest. I think what you want here is going to come down to personal preference.The RR and the Emeril brands have clear glass lids, while the KA is all stainless.All of the Emeril pieces are standard sizes, whereas you get really deep pieces in the RR collection.The KA pieces are just substantial.

The handles on the RR and KA have protective grips, whereas the Emeril handles are all stainless.I think this is going to personal preference as well.Do you want a sleek all stainless appearance or is having protective grip handles more important?

The Emeril set has some nice features that you don't find in the others.The pots all have measurement lines engraved inside the pots so you can fill to your specific needs without having to grab a measuring cup.The saucepan has pour spouts on each side with a lid you can twist to keep it sealed while cooking then open for pouring from the pan.Also included in this set is a vegetable steamer/strainer basket to fit in your large pot (I love this!).You also get the small wok shape pan.

Overall, this is a great set of cookware with nice features.When compared with the others for cooking performance, I don't notice much difference.When I begin cooking more soups and veggies for the winter I may notice and I will post then any marked differences such as will it hold heat as well since it is a thinner stainless. It's dishwasher safe and I will post any reliability notes in the future. This set looks sleek and is easy to maneuver if you prefer lightweight pots and pans. The extra features are a nice plus.I'm glad I've added it to my cooking arsenal. I'm posting a pic so you can see actual set in kitchen.

()Stainless steel cookware is great to look at and cook with, we can all agree on that.Depending on your style preferences, one brand may suit your needs better than others.This Emeril set follows the same path great cookware, but...it's not as good as others.

Most of my cooking is currently done with Cooks Standard Multi-Ply Clad Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set.It's beautiful, tough, heats evenly, and...overall, better than this Emeril set, though Emeril does win out in a couple of features.

First off, both sets look awesome.Both are made in China, so it's a level playing field.This Emeril set has glass lids, whereas the Cooks Standard has mirror-shiny stainless lids.I prefer the steel lids because the glass looks cheaper, and when I'm cooking, looking "through" the glass usually does nothing at all:I see steam.

Next, both sets heat quickly and evenly.Preheat and apply some olive oil, and you have yourself a stick-free pan, either way.But again, this Emeril set lags behind a bit:The Cooks Standard set has handles that DO NOT heat up.Emeril...they get warmer and warmer; cook long enough, and they're going to be hot.Also, the surface area of the smallest skillets is different, with the Emeril one having quite a small surface that actually comes into contact with the heating element.It's deeper than the Cooks Standard, but I don't use a frying pan to cook top-down; more heating area is better for how and what I cook.

Unpacking this set for the first time, I felt the Emeril pots and pans felt a bit lightweight to what I was used to.Then I had to put my theory to the test.The Cooks Standard set has more metal:maybe not much, but in one case, the Emeril 1.5qt saucepan weighed in at 1.484 pounds, while the Cooks Standard was 1.746 pounds.Whether it affects the cooking or not, I can't really tell and don't notice a difference, but after simply handling them, the Cooks just feels more solid.

But all is not lost with this Emeril set:the smallest saucepan has fluted sides to make it much easier to pour liquids.Also, the lid comes with a straining side built-in (so you can turn the lid and pour out liquid, without food coming out too.)I thought those were pretty nice, and wish my other set had them.In addition, the Emeril set has measuring marks inside the saucepans, which, I suppose, might come in handy.(Then again, they're printed not etched, and since these are fairly new, it's difficult to tell if they'll rub off with a month of cooking.)Another thing that bothered me just a tiny bit:of all the stainless cookware sets I've owned, ALL of them have had 18/10 printed or etched somewhere on them.I couldn't find such designation anywhere on this Emeril set.

Overall, this is a good set, but if you want a better set AND to save some money (though you do get 2 fewer pieces), go with the Cooks Standard.Both have a lifetime warranty. I gave this set the same 4 stars that I gave the Cooks Standard because they both perform well, but if I had to cook with only one set (or buy only one set), it wouldn't be this one...

()This is an acceptable set of cookware, which will serve you just fine if you are a college student cooking a few meals a week, or you are buying a set for infrequent use at a vacation home, etc. It is made of bright stainless steel, which we prefer over nonstick for many reasons, google "nonstick" to see why. This set cleans up nicely, and the lids fit well.

However, I recommend against purchasing this set for heavy, every-day use. Reasons:

1. The metal is quite thin. This makes the pots lighter than others with thicker walls, but they do not transfer the heat as well. Definitely not for gourmet dishes when heat control is critical!

2. The handles are metal, no insulation. This is not much of a problem on the long handles, but three pots have short handles. This is especially inconvenient for the large "everyday" wok-like pot, which you will likely want to tip as you cook.

I wanted to give this set three and a half stars. As I thought about whether to round up or down, I noticed that this set is billed as a "Restaurant Chef's" set. A set like this wouldn't last six months in a restaurant, where they cook dozens of dishes per night in each pan. Emeril wouldn't be caught dead using them. These little deceptions were enough cause for me to round down to 3 stars. You can do better with other sets.

That has to be a deal! The question is how does Emerilware compare to the prestigious "All-Clad?" I own both, so here's what I know.

PRICE: An All-Clad Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set sells at Williams Sonoma for $799.95 (list price is$1,225.00). The similar set of Emerilware sells on Amazon for $200!

CONSTRUCTION: Both Emerilware and All-Clad have the patented tri-ply construction with an aluminum core to deliver even heat distribution and are made from 18/10 stainless steel. The handles are similar, attached with two heavy rivets. All-Clad has metal lids, while Emerilware has glass lids. Both are oven-safe up to 500 degrees, but the glass lids are only oven-safe to 350 degrees.

The Emerilware design has one difference from the All-Clad. The sides are thinner and the pan is welded to a "heat diffuser disc" on the bottom to promote even cooking. The All-Clad pan is one-piece construction (except for the handle) and even thickness overall.

When I first held the Emerilware 10-inch saute pan, I thought that it had to be lighter than the similar All-Clad version. Upon weighing both, to my amazement I found only three grams difference! The extra weight in the Emerilware must be from the welded bottom, since the sides are noticeably thinner that those of the All-Clad pan.

ORIGIN: All-Clad Metalcrafters in Canonsburg, PA manufactures both the "All-Clad Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel Cookware" and "Emeril Pro-Clad Cookware." However, All-Clad is made in Pennsylvania and Emerilware is made in China. The price reflects this difference.

PERFORMANCE: How does Emerilware differ in performance? In theory, the All-Clad with the thicker sides should distribute and hold heat better than the Emerilware. Actually, I don't see enough difference to justify the enormous price disparity. Both can get stains and burned on food, but both come clean in minutes using Bar Keepers Friend® Cleanser & Polish: 12 OZ.

The bottom line is that Emerilware Pro-Clad is not All-Clad, but you're not paying for All-Clad. Emerilware looks like a bargain, to me.

()I really had not cooked much with stainless steel until about a year ago. At that time I picked up this set: KitchenAid Gourmet Stainless Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set and greatly enjoyed using it. I was excited to give this set a go and see if there were any great differences between the two sets.

What you get:

Kitchenaid:1 ½ qt and 3 qt. Sauce pan, 8 qt. Stock pot, 3 qt. Sauté, 8 ½and 10 inch skillet, four appropriately sized lids with silicone seals. (10 pieces)

Emeril: 8-Inch Saute Pan Fry Pan 10-Inch Saute Pan / Fry Pan with Glass Lid 1.5-Quart Source Pan with Pouring Spout and Glass Lid 3-Quart Source Pan and Glass Lid 3-Quart Steamer Insert 11-Inch Everyday Pan and Glass Lid 6-Quart Stockpot and Glass Lid. (12 pieces)

What you notice:

Kitchenaid: This is a very basic set with a few nice features. The lids and handles are coated on the underside so you are not as apt to burn your hand when using them. The silicone seal on the lids appears to be durable. They have a nice weight so are light enough to use when filled but heavy enough to be stable.

Emeril: This is a much more attractive set of pots and pans and it looks like some thought went into creating a complete set for the average cook. The sauce pans in particular are so light that you worry a bit about them being "tippy".

What you find:

Kitchenaid: As I said, I cooked with these, pretty much daily, for a year. I liked them so much that I relegated my Calphalon hard-anodized set to the cabinet under the sink and assigned this set to my pot rack. My biggest issue with this set is the fact that it is quite hard to keep looking good. After a year the bottoms were a bit on the brown side and the pots themselves showed some scratches. I did put them in the dishwasher as instructed because that is one of the selling features and I wanted to see how they would hold up. (That isn't something I normally do with my pots and pans.) They clean up fine in the dishwasher, but if you want them all nice and shiny you need to do some scrubbing and lemon rubbing to get them that way.

Emeril: These perform just as well as the Kitchenaid, with one exception. The smaller sauce pan likes to tip over when empty on my gas range. I really keep an eye on it when heating oil too because I do worry. The pan seems more stable if the handle is placed to the center, naturally in this position it blocks my knobs. I do really like the two handled 11 inch everyday pan, with a large family it is oftentimes just the size I am looking for. I also have enjoyed the steamer insert; it fits nicely in the pot and is a good size for steaming a moderate quantity of produce. As for clean up, so far so good. As with the other set, I have put these in the dishwasher and they wash up well. The pots seem to hold their shine and not brown as easily as the other set, but time will tell. A lemon rub readily removes any rainbows in the pans and these pots are a pleasure to hang up on the rack.

What I think:

Either set is a very good value for the price. Emeril has the more complete set and is probably worth the extra bucks. I do have a serious issue with the stability of the smaller sauce pan though and have taken off a star for that. I intend to continue using this set for a few more months to check on wear and to make sure I don't find any other issues. I will update this review if anything comes up.

Smart Planet MDM-1 Mini Donut Maker

Smart Planet MDM-1 Mini Donut MakerI bought this as a fun activity for me and my three year old daughter. Out of the box you get the donut maker itself (which is about the size of a small George Foreman grill) with an attached power cord, and a small instruction/recipe book (which has only one or two recipes in it). The cooking surface is Teflon-coated. It is a truly bare-bones setup but then again you don't really need a whole lot with this.

Setup is a breeze: Just plug it in and close the lid. After a few minutes the red "heating" light goes off and you're ready to go. Lift, fill the six reservoirs with appropriate batter, close, wait about three minutes and you're done. So far we have made chocolate donuts from brownie mix, and yellow and spiced apple donuts from cake mixes. All came out very nice. The cake mix-based donuts cooked a little faster than the brownie mix-based ones.

Each donut is about 2" in diameter with about a 1/2" sized hole in it. One thing that maybe is worth noting: This is a donut machine, not a donut HOLE machine. You will not get tiny-sized "Munchkins" from this machine, only tiny donuts.

TIPS: Use a pastry bag (or a plastic bag with the corner snipped off) to fill the donut molds to avoid spills on the cooking surface. (Be careful with plastic bags or with plastic pastry bag tips; don't let plastic touch the hot surface!) Before filling, wipe the bottom half of the donut molds with some vegetable oil on a paper towel. Use a wood dowel or wood toothpick to remove the donuts; the donuts will flip right out without any sticking. DON'T use cooking spray as it gets everywhere and is hard to clean up (see "the bad" below).

THE GOOD: Very fast donuts, perfectly sized for small children and as a novelty for adults. Easy to use and difficult to screw up; as a test I let some donuts sit for almost eight minutes and they were just fine (and only a little bit dry). It is also a potential calorie control solution; one box of brownie mix easily netted about eight dozen mini donuts, so rather than scarfing down a big fat(tening) brownie you can get a quick chocolate fix from one or two little donuts.:-)

THE BAD: The permanently-attached power cord is a potential hazard; I would have liked to see a safety cord that pops out of the unit if tugged on accidentally. OTOH, the power cord is so short (no WAY it will reach the floor from a kitchen counter) that it shouldn't really be that much of an issue. Also, the baking surfaces are not removable from the unit so you can't just lift them off and throw them in the dishwasher. Then again, if you oil the surface properly (see "tips" above) nothing sticks to it and there's hardly any clean-up.

I would dispute the claim in the description above of it being "safe for even the youngest baker". An EZ-Bake oven is generally safe for young bakers; this, given that the cooking surface is much hotter than a light bulb and has no protection against tiny hands, is NOT the definition of safe. This is not a child's toy nor is it safe for (unsupervised) children. This is a kitchen appliance and should be treated as such.

For an under-$20 kitchen gadget this is tough to beat. You can literally get hundreds of little donuts for very little money. However, be aware of the time investment; this machine only makes six donuts at a time and the average box of cake mix will make around 100 donuts. That's about 16 batches per box. At about five minutes per batch (including oiling the donut wells, pouring the batter in, cooking, and removing the donuts) that's about an hour and a half of work for a single box of cake mix. Since it does cook so fast you can't pour batter in and then go fold laundry for awhile. You have to babysit the unit and keep it going lest you burn up your donuts (which, admittedly, is difficult to do). Just be aware of the time investment and, unless you plan on sacrificing that time to making donuts, you might want to divide up your cake/brownie mixes into smaller batches.

I've only had this machine for about two weeks so I can't speak of longevity. Unless I update this review at a later date with more info, assume that the unit is still working properly.:-)

I just bought this donut maker, and I am really liking it.I didn't know quite what to expect since these are made very differently from deep-fried donuts, but except for a different texture, they are very much like mini-size donuts found in the grocery store.It is really easy to mix up the batter and cook up a bunch of donuts.

It is actually a little hard to burn them, as they brown nicely and don't blacken quickly.I dipped them in butter and then a sugar/cinnamon mix, and the result was delicious.Looking forward to finding more recipes!

After using for several months, I have not yet found something to dislike!I have used a couple different recipes, with very positive results.Every person who has tried them is a fan, giving me some measure of celebrity status. :)They are also great with coffee!

I bought this donut maker for portion control!My husband loves chocolate baked goods. Of course this little snack machine makes tiny donuts that do not taste like donuts you get from a donut shop, however, these do taste like cake donuts. I found nice recipes online for free.Many websites have baked donut recipes that will work.

I made chocolate donuts that did not have a WOW factor! I am a baker so I improved the recipe by adding a little more fat, sugar and salt (of course we all love that). Now they are lighter and more tasty.Next I will try a recipe for Vanilla donuts with chocolate frosting and again I will improve the recipe.

You can make master mixes from any recipe by mixing together the dry ingredients and pack them airtight. This makes it easier to bake from scratch.There is no end to what you can bake in this machine. Great for a little sweet snack.

Use your imagination and have fun. This machine is very easy to keep clean. The donuts always come out easily. I put a tiny bit of vegetable oil in the donut wells before the first batch of 6. That is all you need to do. They pop right out using a toothpick after baking for 2-3 minutes.

Sometimes I don't always get what I ask for but I think I did this time because it was inexpensive and oh so easy to find and order on Amazon. I did not get around to playing with it until about a week ago in the middle of a night of insomnia.

It's a wonderful little donut maker. Does just what it says it will do.

Now my tips based on my usage of the little machine:

1. Do not remove the sticker on the top. It's not just hype; there's an ugly hole under there.

2. The book has only one recipe for cinnamon donuts. However, the basic recipe, I feel, could easily be modified to produce a variety of donuts by changing the spice in the mix and using a different glaze. If I come up with some yummy variations I will post them as comments to my review.

3. The book recipe produces a batter that is not very sweet. My son (23 yrs old) and I agree that the batter could be a tad sweeter. Next baking session I intend to up the batter sugar content slightly (by 1/4 cup or less -will let you know in a comment the ideal amount of sugar after experimenting with it). Right now the batter produces a donut that without the glaze tastes like a waffle.

4. The book recipe batter is a thick batter, thicker than a cake batter but not so thick as a drop cookie batter.

4-Optional Mixing Info A: Batter mixes up very fast with a Kitchen Aid planetary motion mixer rather than a hand held or traditional mixer but don't go out and buy a Kitchen Aid mixer just for the donut maker as they are expensive ($299 when not on sale). However, if you bake a lot and do not yet own a Kitchen Aid (Viking also makes a planetary motion mixer), by all means save up and spring for one or put it on your wish list. Mine is an ugly almond color but has lasted 25+ years without a blip. I bought it because I had burned out 4 hand held/traditional mixers in one year. It now comes in wonderful colors but since mine won't break, can't justify replacing it just cuz I never liked the color.

4-Optional Mixing Info B: I used non-fat milk in my donuts because that's all I normally have in the house and the first batch was made at 3am and came out just fine.

5. The book recipe makes about 30 donuts which is just about right.I never thought of using a brownie mix or cake mix as another reviewer has done. I would not want to make more than 30 at a time just for my family -too time consuming & too many donuts so I think I will just stick with playing with variations of the book recipe.

6. The cooker needs to be oiled *ONLY ONCE* before the baking session, not before each 6 donut batch. Rub top and bottom plates *VERY LIGHTLY* with a scrunched paper towel dabbed with vegetable oil before plugging it in. Spray-on-oil (Pam) puts way too much oil on the cooking plates. Oiling after each batch will grub up the plates and make them harder to clean.

7. Do not overfill the cups. Try to fill level with the flat part of the plate. You do not need to use a pastry bag, that's way over kill. Just two spoons--one to the scoop the batter and one to push the batter off one spoon and into the cup, just like you would do with drop cookies. I am not particular about the holes...I let the batter cover the hole maker and depending on my mood, poke the holes out later if I feel like it.

8. About 90% of the time, a book recipe batch takes exactly 3 minutes (the minimum cooking time mentioned in the book) to cook. In the time it takes to let the previous batch cool enough to touch them and to glaze them, the next batch is almost ready to remove from the donut maker.

9. If the light is on after a batch, wait until the light goes back off before filling it up with the next batch otherwise the next batch will bake imperfectly: parts will be noticeably uncooked on the top. The bottoms always seem to be uneven in color but not uncooked.

10. I use bamboo skewers to remove the donuts; these skewers are very cheap and long enough to be easier to manipulate than a toothpick. The donuts come out really easily but they are hot so put them on a plate and let them cool a minute before touching them.

11. The book recipe glaze is a snap...you can whip it up while the first batch bakes using a microwave to melt the butter. One caveat: the amount of butter suggested is not enough it you want to sugar both sides...double the amount of butter you melt.

12. Some alternate glazes I intend to try after changing the nutmeg in the recipe to vanilla extract or some other extract or spice:

Plain sugar glaze: remove cinnamon from book recipe glaze.

Lemon glaze: 1 part fresh squeeze lemon juice to 2 parts powdered sugar.

Simple Ganache glaze (chocolate like used on eclairs, etc): heavy cream (bring to boil and remove) poured over chopped semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate, mix slightly -lots of free recipes online for this.

Ganache with nuts: after dipping in ganache, dip into chopped toasted almonds or chopped peanuts.

Simple vanilla glaze: gonna try this recipe

13. I have a rolled sugar cookie recipe that requires only 1/4 cup of cocoa to turn them into chocolate cookies so I am going to try adding 1/4 cup cocoa and vanilla to the basic book recipe to get simple chocolate donuts.

14. I have a recipe from my sister for a fresh strawberry cake so I am going to try adding 1/4 chopped fresh strawberries to a vanilla batter and using the cake strawberry icing on the donuts.

15. I am going to try adding small 3oz packages of jello flavors to the recipe to vary the donut flavor (in which case I will probably not increase the sugar since jello has sugar in it).

16. If not a lot of stuck-on residue after baking session (too much oiling causes this), just wipe off with a paper towel otherwise clean with a very soft sponge so you do not damage the nonstick cooking surface.

17. AN APPLIANCE NOT A TOY: personally would not let children under 12 use by themselves. 12 was the age when my mother let my sister and I start using the oven and also the age at which my junior high school put 30+ girls in small kitchens equipped with regular stoves and ovens supervised by only 1 teacher. No one was injured so it seems to be a watershed age for average child to work with stoves and ovens w/o injuring themselves.

Lodge Signature SS12GR Grill Pan, Black, 12-inchI have been drooling over the Lodge Signature series since they were first introduced. I have a cupboard full of Lodge (very well used) and couldn't justify the price until my son direly needed a grill pan. Sooo I gave him my Lodge Logic grill pan (a fine pan in it's own right) and treated myself to this beauty.

I am astounded at the beauty, heft and quality of this pan. The pictures don't do it justice. Superbly crafted in the USA (HOORAY!!!!!), pre-seasoned, with gorgeous, well balanced stainless handles and the date 1896 stamped into the helper handle. The Lodge insignia in stainless is just below the main handle.

Couldn't wait to try it so off to the store for a treat fresh cut 1 1/2" thick prime filets. Rinsed this black beauty in hot water, dried it and right on the stove. Fired it up HOT, sprayed it with canola oil and put those bad boy filets, rolled in crushed pepper, in the pan. Meanwhile, I had a batch of Alton Brown's Bakers going in the oven, a Caesar salad chilling, a demi-glace made and gorgonzola at the ready and my Lodge Fajita pans heating in a 350 degree oven. 5 minutes and a flip, 3 more minutes, drizzle with demi-glace and crumbled gorgonazola and under a lid for about 45 seconds and then on to the hot fajita pans along with the bakers.

HEAVEN!!!! Those filets were better than any I've ever been served in restaurants melt in your mouth tender, juicy, seared to perfection. Serving on the hot fajita pans kept them hot until the very last bite.

The quality of this cast iron pan is just amazing perfect heat distribution and the stay cool stainless handle is a real bonus. (Note: the helper handle does get hot because of it's length) Cleanup was a breeze after dinner I poured hot water in the pan, heated it and then swirled a nylon brush around and through the grooves. Clean as a whistle. Rinsed it, dried it, put it back on the stove for a minute to get rid of any moisture and then wiped it down with a very thin coat of food grade beeswax and mineral oil made for chopping blocks (from Wooden Wonderson eBay). This product helps keep your cast iron seasoned without the rancid smell of oil.

After this experience, I will be buying the other Lodge Signature pans. There are pans and then there are PANS. This falls into the latter category. What a pleasure to use such a beautiful piece that is also exceptionally well crafted, balanced and designed. I haven't had the heart to put it away in a cupboard it's too gorgeous to hide and I'll be using it often.

Hats off to Lodge for an excellent product and applause to Amazon for selling it with the free shipping. This pan will last more than a lifetime. Worth it's weight in gold and now that I've used it, worth every single penny in price. I hope Lodge will add more pans to the Signature line!

Lodge is one of the few cookware products still made in the U.S.Their cookware is widely recommended by experts.A standard skillet like this will run in the mid to high $30's, and I've seen plenty of seconds for $15+ at Marshall's, etc.But those handles will get hot and need a holder.This product goes one big one better, since it has the great looking (and design award winning) stainless steel stay-cool handle (note that the long handle will stay cool about 1 1/2"+ away from the skillet, but the short loop will still need a holder).Pre-seasoning helps a lot.I am dissappointed, though, that Amazon is selling this for $107 delivered when there are several other online sources selling it for $10+ or so less, delivered (Chef's Catalog, a vendor here, sells it for $99 with free delivery).

I am not going to go into detail of all the pros and cons of this pan. I think they are well listed by the other reviewers however, if you are looking for this pan and wondering why the price has jumped drastically, it is because Lodge has temporarily discontinued the "L" Series (enameled cast iron) and the "Signature" Series (cast iron with stainless accents). You will not find these again till they re-introduce them with new look and design tentatively late 2013. So if you love the signature series buy them while you can or wait till they come back. I personally dont recommend the "L" series over the "Color" series which is not being discontinued but if you really wanted an "L" series get it while you can.

Excellent product. I use it for steaks and chops. Get the pan really hot so the meat get a good char and finish it in the oven. Easy to clean with just hot water if you do it before it cools down completely. Heavy so it requires to hands but it is worth it.

Update 4/25/13, Ikeep it on top of the stove and been using it to make Spanish Omellets, it does works good for that, got to be very careful when flipping since the handles get very hot.

Scanpan Classic 10-Inch Crepe PanAfter searching and testing various pans for safety, heat distribution, quality craftsmanship and non stick performance (Including enameled cast iron, and even 100% Ceramic Pans), I ended up with this one.It is made in Denmark. It is Green-Tek (Environmentally friendly, free of PFOA) and the non-stick coating is a mixture of ceramic and titanium (not flaky Teflon).The core is Aluminum which is a great metal for fast and even distribution of heat.

The company says the surface is scratch resistant, but I tend to use plastic utensils when turning my crepes so I wouldn't know how scratch proof it really is.

Overall a very solid feel and great craftsmanship.I have no complaints about this pan and recommend it to anyone who wants to make near perfect crepes, eggs, and other similar "sticky" products easily and quickly.Clean up is a breeze.

I had read reviews on Scanpans so I finally bought one and tried it.These pans are just amazing.You can cook anything in them and then just wipe them out with a paper towel and they are clean.If something really sticks (for instance if you forget something and it really burns) you can use Barkeepers Friend on it and it will be fine.I'm in Culinary School and we did crepes on lab and loved them so I bought this pan for home use.This past Easter Sunday I used it to make crepes with strawberries and blackberries.I did easily a dozen crepes, not one stuck at all and when finished I wiped it out with a paper towel and it looked new again.Another great thing about Scanpans is that they come with a lifetime warranty.If anything ever goes bad with the pan you simply send it back to the factory and they mail you another one!This crepe pan has the "Classic" handle which is a plastic material but it can withstand temps to 500 degrees so it can even go in the oven but my other Scanpans are the "Professional" line which have stainless steel handles.Same great titanium/ceramic hybrid interior but just nicer looking handles.I have not tried the CTX line as of yet.

I love this stuff. Lightweight and non-stick.I use the largest pot to make popcorn. I make popcorn with olive oil and the Teflon is so slick that I never have to wash the pot with soap. I just wipe it out with a paper towel. Great value and supports American labor. The more money we pour back into our communities, the better. The economy is like a river. The more tributaries that feed it, the stronger the river or vice verse.

We were shopping for a good set of cookware for a good price.The problem is that reasonably priced sets tend to be junk and/or have some lid gimmick making them impossible to clean.They also tend to have some weird size saucepan or tiny stockpot that forces you to spend more money and your stuck with a piece you don't need.

This Nordicware set is the ultimate minimalist set.Only the things you need, perfectly constructed.The pans are thick aluminum and super-slick.We have experienced no warping or flaking non-stick.We even abuse these pans by putting them in the diswasher.The rubber handle covering can be slid off for placement in the oven.I couldn't find anything indicating the oven-safe temperature, but my guess is 350F is safe.

The only complaint I could come up with is he lack of a 12" skillet.Fortunately, I already have a nice skillet and no need for a second.

It looks like the price has shot-up since I purchased this set.

This cookware is simply the best I've had in a long time. I was looking for some budget pans to supplement what I had. Boy was I surprised when I opened the box. At this price you better snatch one up for yourself! The non-stick coating in the pans is thick, not that stuff that flakes off after a few uses. The pots are heavy and well balanced. It takes a little longer for them to start heating, but then they cook well. They hold heat well and don't burn the food on the bottom.

Ecolution Elements  Fry Pan Triple Pack, GrayI bought this set of pans for my wife and I. I would have to say that they are average and usable, but not anything to rave about. They were shipped in a box that, when opened, they appeared much as they do in the product photograph. They wore against one another in shipping, adding some scuffs that didn't really hurt anything but were a bit disappointing. Their non-stick surfaces are about middle range quality. Have a screwdriver handy, some of the pans need to have their handles attached, and we found that a couple of the handle screws were loose in the box, so be careful and check before discarding the shipping carton if you buy a set.



I purchased these pans to replace my old T-fal and other non-stick pans with a safer alternative. I have been very pleasantly surprised with these pans. They are the best non-stick surface I've ever had. I also own a Cuisinart pan with a PFOA free coating, and these have a much better "non-stick".

I also have some Ecolution pans which I purchased from a brick and mortar store, and discovered that there are different "lines" of the Ecolution pans. The ones sold here are lighter weight than the other ones I have purchased, but they were also slightly lower in price. I have not seen any noticeable difference in cooking between the two different kinds of pans.

I like that these pans are eco friendly and do not have the dangers attributed with teflon when it starts to break down and peel after extended use or exposed to excessive heat. I do use my pans on gas heat on a Jenn Air stove top, and recently they have emitted a strong "burnt plastic" smell.I really have no idea if this is due to using too high of heat or if this is what happens after extended use.

These egg rings work exactly how they are supposed to.Cooks perfectly round eggs for making homemade egg sandwiches.I haven't tried them with pancakes so I am not sure how they would work for that. Nice weight to them so the egg doesn't leak out underneath.Also, they are a good size.

Alright so here are the pros:

Non-stick! It was very easy to lift the ring right off my food and keep cooking.

The size is nice and large. It's probably a quarter inch too big EXACTLY to fit perfectly on a typical english muffin you would buy at the store. I'm okay with this because I hate biting into a breakfast sandwich and only get a mouthful of bread. The larger size also seems to accommodate their idea of using it for pancakes.

And now the cons:

Most people gave it such a happy review that I thought the negatives just didn't like it for whatever reason. But it does turn out that, consistently, the egg leaks out of the bottom EVERY time. I've used different pans to make sure it wasn't just an uneven pan. I've tried different methods (pouring just a little bit at the bottom to set and seal the cracks up that are leaking so I can pour more on top, etc) but it seems that no matter what I do, it's going to leak to some degree. Which brings me to my next point:

Because they are rubbery, they don't seem to cook the sides of the egg enough so that I can pull the ring off and flip. Just like other reviewers said, this thing could comfortably use 2-3 eggs to actually fill it, so that's what I did. The egg seems to be up so high that either I burn the bottom so the top cooks, or I pull the ring off too early and have the top of the contents spill all over the pan because they never set. So, really, the only solution seems to be using just 1 egg. But it's so incredibly thin when it's done that it doesn't seem appetizing at all.

So really, great for pancakes, not so great for making an egg patty for sandwiches. If I was going to choose one to buy all over again, it wouldn't have been this one. It would have been a smaller, metal one.

I use this to make egg sandwiches every morning. It works very well. Easy to clean. I recommend spraying the pan AND the ring with some cooking spray (Pam or otherwise.) Also, when using egg white egg beaters: pour the first bit in slowly, because it is so runny, it can escape under the ring. If you pour it slower, it allows the egg to cook a little before it can escape. =)

Recommended if you can afford the it!

For it:

Excellent heat distribution / conductivity / diffusion thanks to aluminum core. This wok heats quickly throughout the flat bottom and heats gently up the sides.

Grips food well enough when pushing food up the sides to lower temperatures.

Low heat retention compared to thick cast iron.

Excellent All-Clad build quality. This wok is sturdy!

Cleans up easily with hot water, soap, and light scrubbing.

18/0 magnetic stainless steel bottom works great on induction range.

No non-stick coating. You can get this wok very hot for proper stir frying!

Wide. Ample space for a large stir fry. This is both a pro and a con since it will consume a lot of space on your range.

Against it:

Heavy (about 5 pounds or 2.3 kg). Weak arms may not be able to lift this easily. If you're a chef and/or accustomed to a cast iron wok, you'll have no issue lifting and flipping food.

Awkward stick handle. The long stick handle protrudes almost straight out of the wok, is rather thin, and has a ridge. If you normally use a shorter, wide, cylindrical stick handle, or the dual loop handles, you may not like this wok's handle. It's it's a negligible design flaw though.

If you're looking for the feel and handling of a thin, relatively light, carbon steel Chinese wok, this is not it!

Shallow. This is shallower by about 5mm or more than an average Western flat bottom wok.

Higher heat retention than carbon steel.

High price relative to carbon steel wok.

Conclusion:

This is an excellent Western wok and is a must have if price is not a concern. If you're looking to avoid caring for carbon steel or cast iron (seasoning, rust, breakage), need to use soap to clean up (hygiene requirements, restaurant work), or just prefer leeching nickel from the stainless steel rather than the extra iron from cast iron, this All-Clad wok is a great choice. If you have no such concerns and are equipped with a gas range and wok ring, grab a more authentic round bottomed carbon steel wok instead, but be sure it's multi ply.

I did not find a problem with the balance, as previously mentioned by another reviewer. The only thing a potential buyer needs to be aware of is, that if they are planning on tossing their food, they had better be strong because this unit is heavy! Other than that, it proves to be very useful for large portions. It heats quickly, heats evenly, holds the heat and leaves plenty of room to stir. Yes, it does heat evenly and allows the heat to drift up the sides. The purpose of a stirfry pan is to allow heat to move the sides of the pan to allow food touching the sides of the pan to cook as well. Now keep in mind, there isnt a perfect stirfry pan out on the market if you are cooking on a traditional gas top, flat top or coil range. True frying ala Asian style is done on an open flame!

Love All-Clad products. If you treat them with care, they will last a lifetime. Great size and shape for any cooking/frying. It is a little heavy to toss food but I have no problems using a spatula for cooking. Great heat distribution.

I waited for several months to write this review since the primary use for this frypan was to prepare omelets, and since I use the "slide it out and fold with the lip of the pan" technique, it has to truly be non-stick.My first act was to put it through my own seasoning process, well actually the seasoning process of the Wok Shop in San Francisco.I am happy to report that it works and works well.More than I can say for our super expensive Calphalon infused utensils.Season it before use, wash only with water and a scrubber of your choice, and heat and re-oil after every use.It's light weight, heats rapidly and is truly non-stick.Oh, and yes, the handle does get hot -use a towel or hot pad for crying out loud.

I have always hand washed & dried this pan and have rarely used metal utensils while cooking with this pan.

As other manufacturers have suggested I do use some sort of oil or butter when cooking with it as I do not believe this is advertised as non-stick. At this point I am concerend with the anodized layer leaching into the food.

This pan is great. Easy to clean, keeps its luster and strong sturdy construction. Itcan go from stove top to oven for multitasking in the kitchen. One problem there is no cover. This can be a bit messy to use on flat stove tops, over all very content will recommend.

Calphalon Contemporary Stainless Steel Nonstick 8 Inch Omelette PanWe recently purchased an induction range, and found that our Contemporary (anodized aluminum) Nonstick pieces were (of course) not induction capable. We purchased this 8-inch Calphalon Contemporary Stainless Nonstick pan at a great price, hoping against hope that it would be induction-ready (though it was not advertised as such!) Much to our delight it WAS! As with all our Calphalon pieces it is very sturdy, wonderfully finished, and easy to clean.

For those who cook on induction: a word of caution. Emboldened by our success with the 8-inch CS Nonstick pan, we also purchased a 12-inch CS Nonstick pan, also from Amazon.com, which was NOT induction capable!

A word of CAUTION: apparently not all of the 8 inch pans are induction capable! My guess is we got an OLD one, and that Calphalon has reformulated their pans (cheapened them) and thereby reduced the quantity and/or quality of steel. We have reduced our rating of this product accordingly. I hope that someday Calphalon will realize that quality matters, and go back to the original formulation.

This little pan works so well. My husband and I bought the stainless steel Calphalon Contemporary pots and pans, which we like a lot, but the pans were really hard to clean. We bought this non-stick stainless pan to replace them and it cleans SO easily. We love it!

Circulon Contempo Hard Anodized Nonstick 11-Inch Skillet, SilverThis is my first Circulon product so I didn't know what to expect.This particular frying pan is heavy and well-balanced.The handle is very sturdy and the silicone covering makes it non-slip.It fits a standard 10 inch burner.However, it is only 1-3/4 inches deep. Since the sides are sloped and the food doesn't stick, it is easy to stir things out (guess I need to SLOW down when I'm cooking!).It does not come with a lid and I'm not sure if you can order one separately.All in all a good buy IMO.

I have been using this pan now for 3 weeks and it sure has lived up to the Circulon name. I have pan fried chicken and sauted vegetables and also made crepes once. All foods I cook in this pan come out well made. The pan heats up evenly and the non stick coating is superb. Love the pan.

I bought this pan from Amazon after owning a Circulon wok for 14+ years.We LOVE our wok, and Circulon in general gets very good reviews.So we naturally tried Circulon again.

However, I must say I'm disappointed in this pan.It came with a small scratch on the silver coating on the outside of the pan.When I pulled on the little silver tab of coating it stretched a bit and came off.The silver coating immediately surrounding the scratch seamed like it did not adhere to the pan as well as the normal areas, like I could pull some of it off.At first, I ignored it, but after some thought, I was worried that if it came this way when new, the coating might come off too easily while using it.So I waited and thought about it.

A few days later, I discovered that Bed, Bath, & Beyond has this same pan + more.So, I went to actually see them all.(BTW BBB carries these pans for $25 too, but you can use a 20% coupon and save $5.)My local BBB only had 1 of these pans in stock when I went, and it had even more scratches on the outside than the one shipped from Amazon.Additionally, it had 2 minor pits on the outer coating.Everything was minor, but it just doesn't bode well for a brand new product to have any scratches or pits.And this was on the outside.I would expect the outside to take more abuse since it sits directly on a burner.

Maybe I'm expecting too much for a $25 pan.But I expect something "new" to be in near mint condition.And I expect it to be able to take some minor abuse, like people picking it up in the store and possibly bumping it a bit.If it can't stand up to an occasional store trial, how can it stand up to the regular wear & tear of a kitchen?

I will be returning this pan to Amazon.

So sad.I was so excited and didn't even get to cook with it.:(

I will preface this review by informing you that I am not a great cook.So, I utilize frying pans for browning ground beef or sausage, grilled cheese sandwiches, and breakfast items like eggs and pancakes.I have used a beat-up non-stick frying pan for the last 15 years and never thought much about replacing it until the handle broke.So, I found this online for a reasonable price and gave it a try.

Boy am I glad that I did.The non-stick surface is fantastic and seems like it will be durable (although note that I've only had this product for a week).The pan is well constructed and the heat distribution was excellent.The first trial was grilled cheese, and they came out great.The second trial was fried eggs and bacan, and everyone enjoyed.For the results and the price, you really cannot beat this pan!

It may be a bit expensive compared to the tefals and the farberwares but this one's in the same league as the anolons. Not too heavy and the heat permeates the entire pan for even cooking. Make sure that you wait till it's totally cooled before washing otherwise the non-stick coating will be damaged. Highly recommended.
