Cuisinart MultiClad Pro Stainless Open Skillet

Cuisinart MCP22-30HN MultiClad Pro Stainless 12-Inch Skillet with HelperI'm a fan of multiclad cookware, the kind that takes heat conductive aluminum and surrounds it with easy to maintain stainless steel. Professional cooks swear by it, but I'm just a home cook, and didn't even know about until a few years ago while watching America's Test Kitchen. This popular PBS series tests kitchenware, and reports their recommendations via their TV show, as well as 2 different magazines they publish. All-Clad cookware has always ranked up there as the best, but at a high price!

Fortunately for us middle class working stiffs, other cookware manufactures have picked up on the multiclad concept and have been producing their own versions. Enter Cuisinart's MultiClad Pro line.

This particular item takes all the benefits of multiclad and gives us a reasonably priced alternative. Compared to the All Clad Stainless Steel 12-Inch Fry Pan at a price tag of over $150, you are getting a real bargain here.

This skillet is beautiful, with stunning luster, and solidly constructed. It goes from oven to table with no problems, and looks stunning. The curved lip allows for pouring that resists clinging to the side of the skillet. It's very very easy to maintain. Personally, I hand wash all my high end cookware, so I cannot comment on whether it's dishwasher safe. If you do hand wash (and you should....just sayin'), use Bar Keepers Friend® Cleanser & Polish: 12 OZ and a non abrasive sponge to keep that amazing shine.

I give the product 5 stars, for it's durability, construction, looks, and ease of cleaning. I love this Cuisinart Line and highly recommend it.

Once I learned how to properly heat stainless steel skillets so that the food doesn't stick to them, I've been using Cuisinart Chef's Classic line. The results have been good to very good (especially given the price/quality ratio.) (Hint: search on YouTube "rouxbe how to heat a pan")

This MultiClad Pro skillet is from a different dimension altogether heavier, sturdier, delivering consistently great results every time. Great for browning foods, sauteing meats and poultry, sauces, omlettes, dishes that need to go into the oven, etc. This skillet is especially great for creating a "fond", or caramelized bits of stuck-on food that is used for flavoring your final dish.

Clean up is very easy just put some water into the skillet and heat it up; once it cools a bit, wipe it clean. In extreme cases use "Bar Keeper's Friend" which is available in places like Target. Please note that bleach, ammonia, metal sponges and other abrasives will scratch the surface of your stainless steel fry pan.

In summary, highly recommend!

We had reached the point where we did not like seeing bits of various forms of plastic in our food.We did some research into Stainless skillets and fry pans and decided to take a chance.These really work.So far we have found that we don't need to have the heat set as a high on our glass/ceramic top stove as we did with Teflon and anodized Aluminum pans.Follow the advice of the chefs online, put a little oil in the pan, heat it, place food and cook.Cleanup is simple.

This is a great little pan--just the right size for grilling a single sandwich also very heavy/durable. My first multiclad adn I love it. Cleans up better with Barkeepers Friend than in the dishwasher so I tend to wash by hand.

Paula Deen Signature Porcelain Nonstick 12-Inch Covered Chicken Fryer, Red Speckle

Paula Deen Signature Porcelain Nonstick 12-Inch Covered Chicken Fryer, Red SpeckleMostly I love this pan. I love how it looks, the see through lid, it cleans up easily and the depth of it means if you make gravy in it, you are in no danger of slopping over the sides while stirring vigorously.

However, What I didn't like at all is because it has two handles (rather than one long handle) which look so attractive and is one of the things about it that first caught my eye it takes both hands to pick it up and pour. Sometimes I like to keep the lid in place and use it to "strain" the solid food and be able to pour out any grease or liquids and with this skillet, you can't do that unless you have a second person to help you.

Yes, I could just get out a colander and strain that way but it's just one more dirty dish and after being married for over 20 years, I'm a bit tired of doing dishes and so avoid dirty-ing any extra if at all possible.

One good thing about the two handles is that if you have small children, they are safer in that they don't hang out where a child might be able to grab ahold but I don't have small children so this isn't really a benefit for me.

I'm going to keep the pan for now and will just use it for foods that I won't need to strain.

I don't mean to be overly critical but just thought this might be info that someone would find useful because it never occurred to me until after I'd used the pan a couple of times.

I have always used cuisinart everyday pans and i decided to buy 2 of these.These pans are the best frying pans i have ever owned.I have a ceramic top range,so i heat them up slow and have not had a problem with the color fusing to the stovetop.

Hey...this is a great skillet. I use it constantly. It is just the right size to cook for my 5 member family. Its just not for chicken. I make casseroles, fry meats and make gravy in it. It is very durable and great non stick surface.

I've used may chicken fryers over the years and this one rates as a good purchase.I would have rated it higher, but it doesn't conduct heat as well as others and that can and does cause uneven cooking!Still it is a good fryer for the price.

Nordic Ware Scandinavian Silver Dollar Pancake Pan

Nordic Ware Scandinavian Silver Dollar Pancake PanLighter than a cast iron pan but with substantial weight to conduct heat evenly, this Nordic Ware Silver Dollar Pancake pan makes quite attractive small pancakes.The round indentations have a 3 1/4 inch diameter and are 1/4 inch deep. Regular pancake batter works fine and turning them is easy even if they puff up quite high, just don't overload each compartment about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoon of batter is plenty.

There is only one recipe included with the pan Buttermilk Pancakes so if specialty pancakes are desired, recipes will need to be obtained elsewhere (many are available on-line.) I've used the pan for blueberry, sweet potato and sour dough pancakes with great success. And, as with all non-stick pans, do not use metal utensils or harsh scouring pads on the surface and be sure to keep the heat medium-low, never on high. And, although the pan is non-stick, brush with oil before each use.

I received this pan as a gift and wondered if it would be relegated to the back of the cabinet, taken out once a year, but I've actually been using it at least once a week to prepare both pancakes and eggs. The compartment is exactly the right size to make a perfect round circle of scrambled eggs for an English muffin breakfast sandwich.

The pan also works well for mini-crepes. Tiny desserts are a favorite because the indulgence is small. I used hazelnut spread as the filling and added a small scoup of vanilla bean ice cream to the plate (whipped cream would work well, too) and drizzled a little chocolate sauce over the top and it was a tiny confection that no one at dinner could refuse. Seconds? Why not!

As with all Nordic Ware merchandise, it is made in the USA. It is a high quality pan and with proper care, should last a lifetime.

I am an old-fashioned guy who prefers iron for cooking but when I could not find an iron pancake pan I settled on this and found that it works just fine.

Vollrath 67812 8-Gauge Aluminum Wear-Ever Fry Pan with PowerCoat2 and TriVent Silicone Handle, 12-InchI wanted a strong, heavy ,durable pain, mainly to cook meatballs in and wow this is it. It is a great pan. I made 2 huge batches of meatballs in no time at all. I was very pleased at how much this pan holds. My cast irons'are smaller and heavier so this works bettet. But with the handle lenght this is one large pan. I need to clear out some space for it but it is well worth it.

It did not stick anything and cleaned up very fast.I like this pan alot and would buy it "AGAIN". It's a very well balanced pan and the weight is just right.The pan

heats up very fast as well on a ceramic stove top like mine.Give it a try and see there is no lies in what this pan can do, Why?, it's American made, that's why... .

Rome Old Fashioned Waffle Iron

Rome's #1100 Old Fashioned Waffle Iron, Cast IronI bought 2 of these. Based on the potential product quality, I would give it 5 stars. These can make great waffles (nonbelgian i.e. thin), crisp on the outside, tender in the center, and light and airy. It's a revelation in fact, if you are used to the typical doughy waffle. I like these much better the what the waring pro, nonstick, flip, automatic beep, etc. In addition, the cycle time can be quite fast, provided you preheat the irons sufficiently and keep a high enough temperature. I can average 1 waffle a minute.

However, I took off a star because of the following caveats:

1) You must know how to season cast iron, otherwise the waffles will stick. It would be great if they could preseason this, like lodge logic. To season, first i put the irons in boiling water to take off the wax coating, then soaped and washed. I decided to season this on the stove top (make sure you have a good hood & vent). I preheated the irons, then brushed a raw chunk of pork fat on the surfaces several times and continued heating until the seasoning looked hard and black and no longer sticky.It took about 30 minutes (using 4 burners as I had 4 halves or two whole wafflers) and it will give off a lot of smoke. I decided to do this on the stove top because i have more control vs the oven.

2) The handles get hot. So, you need a mitt to handle it. I find a thin mitt easier to use than a thick one. It's easier to lift just the top half with a thin mitt. And you have to be somewhat careful as the halves can disengage while you are filling and removing the waffles. Having said that, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I would not let my kids use it though. They also sell these with wooden handles. It would probably be easier.

3) You have to use enough heat. You have to preheat each side till it starts to smoke. I use medium to medium high heat on a gas burner. Do not use high heat to preheat as you can burn off the seasoning. By the way, i don't know if this will work on an electric burner. And you have to brush or spray some oil or butter. I brush lightly a mix of oil and butter. I find i only have to do this every other waffle, as the waffle mix does have some butter in it.

4) I don't wash the waffle surfaces, I just brush and wipe after cooking.

HOWEVER, in spite of all that, I really like these and the my kids rate the waffles a 10, especially the cheesy waffles.

I use a yeasted waffle batter that I make the night before. It includes, flour, buttermilk, eggs, and a bit of sugar and salt and some melted butter. I stir in a pinch of baking soda for extra lift prior to baking. You can put vanilla extract or grated cheese. I top with either real maple syrup, dulce sauce, or whipped cream and chopped fruits.

I have been making and freezing waffles for my family (teenagers included) for about 10 years now and this is the best waffle maker yet. I've gone through about 3 electric ones over the years, so it's nice to know I'll never need another!

It can seem to need a lot of attention, but it's really worth it.

1) The most important thing to know is: Are you familiar with working with iron skillets? You'll need to know how to season the iron and keep it seasoned throughout its lifetime of use. This could be the waffle iron's down-fall if you don't know how to do this.

~~~To season this I first burned off the paraffin coating in my oven with double aluminum foil under it. Then I washed it in the dishwasher. Then I heated it on the stove-top with a heavy brushing of canola oil and then let it cool completely. I did this about 4 times. This takes a day or two because of cooling times. Then I washed it again.
2. Once seasoned, I use it on my gas stove top at a flame set just less than medium. I have a bowl with several Tbsp. of canola oil next to the stove and a basting brush. I lightly brush the skillet before each waffle. I sometimes use spray oil and that is easier, but doesn't really help season it in the beginning.
3. Pouring 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of batter on the iron, then I use a countdown timer (Timex Ironman watch: it counts down and repeats automatically) set for 2 minutes. At 2 minutes, using oven mitts, I turn it over for another 2 minutes.
4. After 4 minutes total, the waffle is done and ready for eating, or let cool and then freeze.
5. After use, I may give the iron a light coating of oil, or simply let cool and store. Every two or three uses I place it in the dishwasher without any ill affects to the seasoning.
This waffle iron makes the best waffles: light thin, and fluffy. No uncooked parts as with an electric iron. I like the beautiful simplicity of this iron, and I like that it also is a good source of dietary iron.
I use this on a gas stove.This waffle maker makes perfect no-stick waffles every time.First I melted off the wax coating and seasoned the pan (see below for instructions). Get your wire cooling rack, a clean dishtowel and parchment paper and scissors. Cut about 12 squares of parchment paper to place one in between each cooked waffle (these can be reused for a couple batches and you can use them to place between your waffles for freezing in a container).
The first time I cooked waffles on this iron, I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to spray the iron every time I put more batter in it. This worked out well for me because not one of my waffles stuck (although I did go through almost a whole can!).The second time I made waffles,I only sprayed the irons once at the beginning of the first waffle and they did not stick to the pan when not spraying each subsequent waffle.
Here's my technique for cooking...heat each irons at same time on gas burners heated at medium heat.Using a potholder or folded dishtowel to hold the irons (because they get very hot) Spray the bottom iron's cooking surface (away from flame, of course) (with the bar), place it back on the burner and using a #20 scooper, almost fill it with batter (I use Alton Brown's recipe).Using the back of the scoop smooth it out until the batter is about an inch from the edges of the iron.Turn off the burner under the other iron--this is the one with the hook end (and spray that one with butter spray).Carefully place the hook into the bar and place iron on top of the iron filled with batter and align properly.After one minute has passed, use your towel and flip the irons over (still on medium heat). Cook another minute and check each side using a wooden skewer.You may need to flip it again to brown a little more.I like my waffles a light golden brown.Release the waffle from the iron using a wooden skewer and unhinge the top.Put waffle onto dish towel and start your next waffle, heating both irons again on medium heat.When the second waffle is cooked, place a square of parchment paper on the first waffle and stack it on top.Continue this process.If you like your waffles crispy, pop them into the toaster oven.My daughters now prefer the home-made waffles over storebought!
The first thing I did was boil a kettle of water to pour over the waffle iron to melt off the wax coating placed on the iron to protect it in shipping.Be careful...use pot holders to lift it and turn it over --it will get very hot.Now it's time to season the waffle iron.Preheat oven to 350F.Separate both pieces of the waffle iron and coat each of the 4 sides with lard or Crisco shortening using a paper towel or pastry brush to get into all the little squares. Crisco is the preferred choice because it is very highly refined, although I have used lard.It will start to melt immediately because the waffle iron will still be hot/warm from melting off the wax coating.Use paper towels to smear the fat all over the pan, handle and everything. Keeping the two piece apart still, place the two pieces onto a cookie sheet lined with foil, square sides facing down.Using proper ventilation (because this can get a bit smokey), place the cookie sheet and waffle irons in the 350-degree oven for an hour. Do not open the oven during cooking or you will get a huge cloud of smoke in your kitchen.Turn the oven off, leave oven door closed still; let the pan cool down (I let mine cool down overnight), wipe off the excess oil, and put it away.
The whole process of cooking waffles on cast iron can be quite therapeutic if you're not doing it in the morning rush to get breakfast on the table.I always do it in the afternoon or on the weekends when I have time.I hope you love making homemade waffles on your teflon-free waffle iron as much as I do!
I think I'm going to order the one with the long handles for camping!It wasn't available when I ordered this one.
Bon appetit!
We received the Rome waffle iron this past week and I couldn't wait for the weekend to be able to try it out.
Seasoning was a bit of a hassle.We used the oven to do so and it definitely smoked up the kitchen.I'd recommend seasoning outside on a grill if that's an option.
We then tried the recipe that came with the waffle iron.Our preference is for thinner / crispier waffles.When following the Rome recipe, the waffles were a bit too rich/buttery for our taste.We didn't have any problems with the waffles sticking to the waffle iron, though.
We then switched to a bisquick recipe and liked the result much better we were able to make very light and flaky waffles.Next step for us is to experiment with adding other ingredients.
The Rome waffle iron is definitely a bit of work but once you get it down, I think the result is very good and I can see us using this for years to come.Nothing beats cast iron for even heat distribution.
Two comments for Rome:first I agree that they should offer pre-seasoned waffle irons to eliminate the hassle of having to go thru that process and second it would be good if the handles on the waffle were longer and there was a way to make them from / coat them with a material that doesn't retain heat so well.
I've spent considerable time searching for a solution to satisfy waffle cravings.For occasional use, purchasing an electric waffle maker isn't feasible, because unless it is used on a regular basis, the grids can smell rancid after periods of none-use (regardless of how clean they are).Also most electric waffle makers fail to heat sufficiently to produce a crispy texture, plus most brands have Teflon coated grids, which can be detrimental to health.Frozen waffles are convenient, but contain too many additives, plus some produce a peculiar after-taste.
When I first saw the Rome cast iron waffle maker, I was somewhat sceptical, visualizing the waffle sticking like crazy or the batter oozing out.But the numerous on-line reviews convinced me that for $18 it was worth a try. Although the waffle iron looks small, it's actually a good size.The waffles produced are about 6-3/4 to 7 inches in diameter by 1/2-inch thick they're larger than the store-bought frozen variety and leftovers can easily be frozen and re-heated either using a toaster or a toaster oven.
SEASONING ON AN ELECTRIC STOVE Some reviews say it's impossible to use this waffle maker on an electric stove, but I've encountered no problems.Naturally, it's better if you can season the waffle iron outdoors on a gas barbecue, but if not, the process can still be accomplished indoors without too much difficulty.
1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. Remove wax coating separate the grids of the new waffle iron and thoroughly wash in hot soapy water, scrub with a nylon brush, rinse well and dry with paper towel.
3. Brush both sides of the grids with canola oil (or any vegetable oil that takes high heat it doesn't have to be lard).
4. Place the grids on a foil lined baking sheet and bake at 350 °F for one hour. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
5. Re-coat both sides of the grids with additional canola oil.
6. Turn the small electric stove elements to medium-high and heat both sides of each grid until the smoke dissipates.Be sure to have good ventilation (stove fan on and windows open) when doing this so it doesn't set off the smoke alarm.
7. Cool the grids, re-coat with oil and repeat the heating process they should turn colour from grey to black.
MAKING WAFFLES So, with a bit of trepidation, I recently made waffles for the first time in over 30-yrs using the Rome waffle iron and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.The first waffle stuck in one tiny spot, but otherwise came out without a hitch.I cleaned off the stuck bits and brushed some more canola oil on the grids, closed and heated it for a few minutes before adding batter.The rest of the waffles came out easily without sticking.Their texture was crispy on the outside, but tender on the inside yum!Note: To avoid sticking, it is essential to season the new waffle iron properly and to preheat the grids until they smoke before pouring in the waffle batter.
1. Prepare a favourite waffle batter (I use one with folded-in egg whites for a fluffier texture from the Joyof Cooking cookbook).
2. On first try, the waffle iron is a bit finicky to handle, but after a few tries it becomes much easier. When opening the iron to oil, pour in batter or remove waffle, be sure the bar on the hinge faces up this eliminates inconvenient separation of the iron.
3. Turn the small electric element to medium heat to preheat waffle iron.
4. Open the waffle iron and brush some canola oil on the grids, then close it.
5. Heat the waffle iron for 10-minutes (5-minutes each side) or until it smokes when opened.
6. Ladle in about 1/2-cup of batter (the batter should sizzle; otherwise it's not hot enough), close the iron and set a timer for 1-1/2 to 2-minutes.
7. When the timer beeps, flip the iron over and leave for 1-1/2 to 2-minutes longer. Timing will vary according to your stove's element and depending how brown you like the waffle.If the waffle becomes too dark, too fast, then turn the stove element a bit lower.
8. Remove cooked waffle.
9. Brush the grids again with canola oil and reheat for a few minutes (till it smokes) before ladling in more batter. (Note: Because this is a new waffle iron, I brushed oil on the grids between making each waffle, but it's probably not necessary once the iron builds up it's own seasoned coating).
CLEANING A BREEZE:
1. Allow the waffle iron to cool.
2. Rinse under hot water, scrub lightly using a nylon brush (NEVER use soap to clean).
3. Heat both sides of each grid on the stove element, at low to medium setting, until dry and then wipe with paper towel and allow to cool.
MINOR ISSUES:
1. A pre-seasoned waffle iron would certainly eliminate the hassle of seasoning.
2. The handles are a bit short should be longer.
3. The handles get piping hot, but an Ove-glove is the perfect solution (I use only one glove on the left hand to open or close the grids, while leaving the right hand free for pouring batter or removing waffles).
4. A bit of oil drips from the hinge onto the stove top, (probably from brushing on too much oil while preheating the grids) but is easily cleaned.
PARTING COMMENT:
If you prefer the thinner, crispier texture of a waffle, then this waffle iron is definitely a winner and worth every penny. It's perfect for 1 or 2 people, but a larger family would definitely benefit from using two of them in order to speed up the preparation process.
Anolon Advanced Bronze Hard Anodized Nonstick 8-Inch French Skillet
Anolon Advanced Bronze Hard Anodized Nonstick 8-Inch French SkilletI use this mostly for eggs. The pan is heavy, well made, well balanced, truly non-stick. My Circulon egg pan doesn't even compare...seems flimsy next to this one.
Eventually, I hope to replace all of my Circulon with the Analon Advanced.
This entire line of pans is superb.The 8" skillet is solid, heavy without being too heavy.The handle is very comfortable, and the silicone provides for a good grip.No need to use high heat with these pans.The inside and the exterior have a very effective non-stick surface, so the pan is so easy to clean.There is nothing more in a pan that anyone could want.The quality cannot be beat, in my opinion.
This is the only pan I use now. I'm working on the theory that if I need a 10", that's too much food for me. It cooks 2X 3oz.-5oz. just fine. I've discovered that when I heat sandwiches, I can pretty much turn the heat off after flipping the sandwich one time. There is so much residual heat that it keeps right on cooking! This past summer, in order to keep kitchen heat down, I would run the pan under cool water for a couple of seconds after using. I've done this many times now and I don't think I'm shocking the pan all appears to be working at the 110% quality mark. Even the handle is super comfortable... The only way this pan might earn another, or bonus, star would be if it came out and cooked the food for me.
Even heating, very sturdy and cleans up with a wipe, even on the outside of the pan. I never submit reviews...but this pan was so exceptional for its quality/price/value ratio, I felt I needed to step up and tell others. I use my pans constantly. No seasoning needed; I wash my pans by hand (although they are dishwasher safe).
Precise Heat 12-Inch Surgical Stainless Steel Deep Electric Skillet/Slow Cooker
Precise Heat 12-Inch Surgical Stainless Steel Deep Electric Skillet/Slow CookerI searched for hours on the net,looking for one thay was NOTa non stick coatingAND had the metal lid,this had both of what I was looking for! works well,and easy clean up! a very good buy for the money
This is a beautiful pot with a polished stainless steel interior and exterior. This was very important to me as I needed a crockpot that did not use typical glazed ceramic for the same reason I avoid non-stick teflon cookware. After noting it's quality, I was surprised by how large the pot is. You could cook 2 whole chickens in this thing. Using it for the first time yesterday, I wanted to burn it in by using the hottest setting. It got very hot very quickly. This could be a plus, but also something to keep an eye on. I was braising a chicken and it was boiling the water within 10 minutes even though the chicken was frozen. The temperature dial has a range from 225 to 425 degrees. I am curious how this will work as a slow cooker and will post an edit later.
Now for the cons : the lid is not heavy enough. As soon as the water began to boil, it started to make the lid bob up and down and splatter everywhere. I did not have it overfilled with water. I put a heavy object on the lid and opened the steam vent in the center of the lid, but it still kept splattering liquid. This happens at it's hottest setting. I don't imagine this will be much of a problem at a lower setting, but don't know yet.
Apart from this issue, this is a great looking, very functional stainless steel skillet/slow cooker that seems to be constructed well with quality materials (except for the too-thin lid, also stainless steel though it looks as if it could be glass in the picture).
I haven't and this pan for long and have taken very good care of it.It's already started to chip and is missing very small amounts of ceramic.BOOOOO!I take back my review below from when I first bought it.Still much less "non-stick" than the Zwilling, but falling apart.Shenanigans!
ORIGINAL: My expensive first ceramic purchase of a Zwilling JA Henckels Twin Spirit Thermolon Fry Pan, totally SUCKS and it was EXPENSIVE! This taught me to test new pans right away.This pan is wonderful, scrammed eggs don't stick without any added butter or oil (over easy need a tiny touch of oil just to ensure your yolks don't break).It wipes clean, has a very heavy bottom that distributes heat evenly and is exactly as described by the manufacturer.If the ceramic holds up this will be my new favorite brand for ceramic cookware. I am using it to cook soup, rice, stew, etc. and it just works perfect. As it is stated in the product features, this pot heats very quickly and it is easy to clean. To my surprise, the product package had a pitcture of Lidia Bastianich (my favorite Italian cooking show hostess), meaning she recommends it too.
Lastly, the price was good so I am very happy with this pot!
I am still using this pot!
There are tons of wears from 3 years daily use but it is just doing great.
I was so right about this pot.
Where has this pan been all my life?Easy to clean (dishwasher safe also) ..heats up quickly and evenly..lid is just the right weight and is glass so you can watch what you are cooking...Great size for just about anything.I have made everything from a potfull of jambalya to corn on the cob and this pan has made me look like I know what I am doing.
Perfect gift at a great price.Buy this as a nice treat for yourself...you won't be disappointed.
Ok, I use this pan to make the most divine goat milk fudge from scratch, on a glass top stove...not an easy feat for sure. A decadently smooth batch with perfect set is all about the pan, even temperatures, and lots of stirring. (Lots and lots of Stirring!)
I have tried quite a few stainless steel pots/pans; some very expensive some mid-range, and none have produced results as nice as this pan.
Firstthis pan's curved sides and attachment angle to the bottom make for easier stirring with less hand fatigue and also eliminates small missed stir area edges like on straight sided pans. This is important because sugar crystal buildup happens where your spoon tip can't reach or get into on every stir swipe and the crystals ruin the smoothness of the fudge.
Secondthe bottom heats completely even (on my stove anyway) and distributes the heat up the sides evenly too. Just as important, once removed from the heating element the pan cools quicker than other pans and this makes for better incorporation of added ingredients with a thicker set up.
This pan is light and has a very smooth bottom. The brand name imprint on the bottom doesn't affect the smoothness, like on other stainless steel pans. As I'm stirring in one direction, I can easily spin the pan in the opposite direction on my glass top. It's balanced well, stays in place while I'm doing this, and glides effortlessly.
Yeah, I know... not supposed to spin or slide pans on glass cook tops and normally I don't.
ThirdBecause of the lighter weight of this pan, as compared to other stainless steel, it's easier to pour the fudge out into the awaiting pans. This is never an easy thing to do, but the pan's lighter weight is helpful, especially with a large batch of fudge. The tapered rim also helps for a smooth pour.
Fourthit cleans up like a dream.
If you're worried about the unusual shape being a problem, forget about it.Any concern I had about the non-vertical sides making this pot tippy proved unfounded.it's as good at boiling pasta as it is simmering soup.I have, however, noticed small spots forming on the bottom (inside) of the pot.These could not be removed with barkeeper's friend.They're very small and I'm not too worried about it.But I know other reviewers have noted it and returned the item.
It looks beautiful sitting on my stovetop and it performs well enough but I was a bit disappointed by how thin the sides are.I had read this criticism from other reviewers but the price was good ($25) so I bought it and I'm happy with it.For the price, a good pot, but if you are used to Calphalon or the other pricier brands, you'll be disappointed. I have a KitchenAid set with gray silicone handles that is much heavier and thicker steel.A reviewer said it would be easy to burn food but, as with all stainless steel, you HAVE to lower the heat.I haven't burnt anything.
UPDATE:it is now March 2010 and I have really enjoyed this pot.I find I use it a lot.because of it's size, it has become my go-to pot.It still looks shiny and new. I have no complaints and will even add another star making it 4 stars.
The pan is attractive in color, a deep pan, heats easily. In many ways it is perfect and if I had a gas range I would have given it five stars. However, although the pan bottom is perfectly flat it does still spin easily on a glass cooktop even with a heavy lid on it. I'll keep it since I am the only cook in the house so will remember to be careful when using it.
Purchased this as a gift for my grandmother. She was nuts about the set. Cute colour. Great price. Makes a very nice starter piece for someone interested in the set. Big pan, deep, perfect if you want a single pan that has multiple purposes.
These are pretty pans, heavy-sided and they look well-made. The pieces are the basics; two pots with lids, one straight-sided 2 qt and one slant-sided 1.5 qt, and three skillets, 10", 8" and 7" which are what you probably are going to use the most. And also some non-stick friendly tools.
However, after a few months of using the largest skillet, which is my go-to pan for most cooking, it has lost the ability to remain non-stick. If you don't use a lot of oil or butter, the bottom will stick. Then you are faced with the dilemma on how to clean out the stuck food--and if you don't do it gently, the pan will continue to deteriorate.
There is a lot to like about these pans, but I am not completely confident of the durability of this particular green coating (non-pfe, pfoa.) Perhaps this version has a poorer quality coating than some others.
Purchased three sets and both of the frying pans always stick, contacted HSN for help and they referred me to the manufacture, another run around save your money dont buy, trying to find out what went wrong so I can tell my sister and son what not to do but this was a MAJOR waste of money. How sad there was no attempt to resolve this situation prior to the review being posted.....
I purchased a similar Green-Life set at Walmart several months ago (for about $50, with slightly different pan sizes). Because I had read other reviews of other similar pans, I was very careful to NEVER use a green scrubby pad on them... and they have lasted beautifully and are amazingly non-stick.
I even accidentally burned up a pan of beans -I mean the beans turned to CRUSTY black carbon and the smoke poured until the smoke detector screamed -reminding me that I was cooking. I was really angry at myself, and put the smoking pan outside to calm the screeching smoke alarm. I didn't bother to bring the pan in for several days, assuming that I had killed it.
But, when I finally looked at it, I was amazed to find that the hard lump of 'blackened beans' pulled out in one piece, and the pan is fine! I especially love the (smallish) stock pot -came on here today to see if I could find a Green-Life stock pot a little larger, and a 3 quart saucepan. (The set I have comes with a very small saucepan and the (maybe 6 qt ?) stock pot... a little too small and a little too large for most of the cooking I do (just for 2 people).
This set offered here looks like it contains 2 larger saucepans -and I am excited to get more of the frying pans, which I use daily.
I purchased the Todd english green pan square grill pan and from day one it definitely did not perform as a non-stick pan.I have to really scrub it to get it clean.Very disappointing.No more Todd English non-stick pans.
Statistics says that nonstick pans have a five year shelf life. This must be true as I have had a set that I purchased in 2007. Sadly, they are now breaking down. Everything sticks, they are hard to clean, and always look dirty. I am so sad by this as I loved them and they really were a good buy. It says a lifetime warranty, but where to send them in for a warranty replacement?
